Today I am showing the glue press I made for segments. It will work for gluing any project but I do a lot of segment turning so it is very handy.
I have been ask many times to show my glue press and how it was made.
Very easy to make using wood you probably already have.
This is the Press Clamp I used and it comes in many lengths:
www.amazon.ca/Pony-Tools-6712...
The one I have is 9 inches long

You are watching how I do things and not suggesting others should do it the way I do.
You need to know your machines and how to use them. Follow how the manufacture says to use them safely.

Thanks Larry. I have never cared for weights as I do not feel I get enough control when gluing segments together but it works where that does not matter. This is the first time I've seen your face. It turns out that your are nicer looking than I thought. Just kidding. A great alternative to your press screw is one made of wood, using a wooden screw, tap and die set. I've seen many of these made and they are super for an application, like this. ;-)

I made my screw press adjustable by using angle iron drilled and tapped with to accept 2 5/16 bolts for stability and attached to the horizontal 2x4 housing the screw. That’s an ingenious press to glue wood rings together. It is small and very portable. For me, I rely on a big 20 ton press that I used in restoring and building cars for gluing wood rings together. You gave me another good idea to build one out of wood instead of making the long walk out to my car shop to the press rings together there. You’ve provided 2-3 videos in the past on making jigs that have worked well for me. Now I have one more idea. Thanks for sharing, Gary!!!

@@sampoole5373 That should work great. Mines a 50 year old Craftsman I bought new. It does have 8 speeds but no table adjustment. Some metal brackets that wrap under the base and fasten to the uprights would help a lot. I have used it like this for many years and keep thinking about doing just that. I was also going to use some metal dowels which would work as well. I meant to mention that but it slipped my mind. Thanks for pointing that out and I hope others see this as it will help. But for sure the next time I use it I will have some on so I can show something that will help.

You built that press hell-for-stout! You obviously understand how much pressure you can achieve with an inclined plane wrapped helically around an axis. :-) I haven't done any segmented or glued-up bowls yet, mostly because I still have a good supply of burls in Southeast Alaska. But when I start having to do glue-ups, I'll build a press based on your design. Thanks for the tip, Gary! -- Paul

Thank you very much Paul. I think if I had a good supply of burls I would be turning them as well. I do have one left that someone gave me and I am waiting for just the right time to turn it. Or how I want to cut it to get more than one turning from it actually. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Gary. I received some free scrap odd pieces of black walnut boards that I cut to uniform size. They are stored for when I have time for sectional rings. Your description made this project looked easier than imagined. I really liked your comment regarding belong able to find the screw crank, it is so true that we squirrel away something that could be used in the future but when the present arrives we can’t find it; glad you could.

Thank you Lee, I know I was sure happy I found this on the first try. I spent 5 years looking for a really nice 6" Starrett scale and never would have found it if I had not decided to move a work bench . It had slipped off and was behind one of the legs against the wall. Believe it or not for the last 3 years it has been sitting on my computer desk and am looking at it right now. I decided I can use it here while designing things. Thanks for watching, Gary

A very well done, easy to understand video, Gary. Makes me want to build one! I did build a flower press for my wife several years ago and it's quite similar but with a captured flat plate on the hand-threaded dowel for more coverage. You don't want it or even need it for your press but it works great for flowers. I'll bet you have a lot of viewers wanting to build one of these for their segment work, which you also have a lot of folks wanting to do. Great job, professor! 😊 Phil

Thanks so much Phil. The flower press sounds pretty cool. Yes it seems a lot of them want to build one. I have been asked about it for a few years so this was the perfect time. Catching up on home owner chores kind of slowed me down and big turning projects so this was perfect as well as the easy one I have for next week. But never fear the professor is busy on another mad mathematical project LOL. Take care, Gary

Nicely done. The traditional design of a veneer press has many practical applications, not the least of which is gluing up segmented bowl layers. It equalizes clamping pressure effectively throughout the glued surfaces, which clamps often do not. Thanks!

Thank you Kent, for sure using the lathe works but if you are wanting to turn while the glue dries it does not work so well. I will use the lathe for some glue up if there are only a few pieces. Or for lining up some segments. Lots of options. Thanks for waching, Gary

Gary, I think you left out a major advantage to the glue press. While it is easy to do glue-ups on the lathe, it means the lathe is tied up as a clamp for hours. I made one of these last year and I often use it so I can keep turning while glue dries on another project.
