Styrene might be my favorite material for a while so we'll see a lot of it in the future. It's awesome, you can make and prototype virtually anything and it doesn't require any fancy tool. Anyone can start right now making things.
I first discovered abs (styrene) in NYC at a Jimmy Diresta's lesson at the school of visual art he used to teach at.

Great video but your audio levels were all over the place. The music volume was much louder that you're speaking volume. I had to constantly adjust my TV's volume in order to listen to your video comfortably.

TheHayes32 yup! Now we’re editing in the shop (i used to edit at home) with all kind of noise and fans constantly on... Even with headphones it difficult to do the levels right but it’ll be better. I apologize!

So I'm not the only one who noticed it? I often keep my computer volume at 50% when looking at vids, to be able to adjust the volume comfortably but I raised it for the spoken parts at the start of the vid and quickly lowered it when the montage music came on and up, down, up, down haha. I have edited on enclosed headphones to try keep external noise at a minimum and also keep an eye on the VU meter levels of each separate audio track and you'll notice if something is way too high. Even looking at the visual representation of audio is a bit of a give away at times, providing it is accurate. Even a gentle compression of all of the audio helps to level things out but do that at the audio mastering stage. Always remember to let your ears rest before a final run thru and render as your ears naturally compress audio over time and headphones are a major problem for that... Or get someone else to listen to the audio before rendering. Other than the audio, it's ALWAYS a good video, content is spot on and we're just being picky bastards with the audio!

use level meters buit-in your editing software. get both to -9db if you are not playing them simultaneously. It's kinda a standart in industry for those who actually follow standarts..

I'm in East Tennessee, I run plastic extrusion machines, I fill hoppers with poly styrene that was made from scrap and recycled PS in house! I run up to 8 lines of extruders at a time, great material im able to make a part straight as a arrow with my experience

Thanks for the informative video. I've been watching Maker videos on styrene and some of them turn the knife upside down and score with the back side of a knife allowing little curls to come up and it doesn't push the styrene down and cause it to pinch. Not my idea but I have tried it and it works better than just using the sharp edge of the blade, especially on thicker styrene.

I like how while scoring the white sheet it almost created the illusion that the maker knife was also of the same colour .It was a cool colour as well. Also if you had a ribbon under the batteries which some electronics do you could easily take out the batteries in one tug,instead of cutting the sides.

It's nice to consolidate stuff like that into an easily maintainable space. I need to label my adapters and clean up my connections especially for my guitar set -up. A suggestion for cutting things like your round-out for the battery sides is to fit it over an overhanging table corner. That knife looks more and more tasty every day. Ciao Fratello!

Both ABS and HIPS (high impact polystyrene) are available as 3d printing materials. Parts made from these materials can easily be welded/glued and smoothed with solvents!

Wet sand your edges with 400 or 600 grit sand paper with a bit of water and dish soap it softens the hard styrene edges and gives a smooth manufactured look to the piece... abrasive Vim soap is good also

Stefan Majonez he mentioned that styrene is something live abs. He also mentioned he is using a solvent (acetone). And since its abs, acetone will work as solvent to merge the two elements totgeher.

I made a phone holder for my motorcycle out of styrene plastic, but I couldn't seem to find that "plastic weld" you're talking about so I've used superglue/ca glue, but it doesn't work as well I think. The connections are still brittle.

Excellent video, cheers. Another material to try out is foam PVC board. (e.g. "Sintra, Plastock, Palfoam" etc.) It's _much_ easier to work with than Styrene; it's more flexible, it's way easier to cut and sand, and takes paint really well. Drilling is so easy that my dining room table has little holes in it... It's widely used in prop-building, model making, dolls-house furniture etc. Don't look for it in model stores though... you'll probably get ripped off. e.g. Evergreen styrne.. Instead, find a plastics retailer or maybe even a large hardware store: they'll can sell you a giant sheet of the stuff for about the same price as Styrene. You can also buy in huge thicknesses, for sculpture.

If you are doing large batches of Styrene work, clear PVC cleaner can be used instead of the “official” solvent. It has the same active ingredients and is much cheaper.

If it has a lot in common with ABS then you can also try acetone, I use this to glue parts from 3D printing together. It might work for this also in a controlled syringe way if dispensing. Just a little bit, because it can also eat it away so don’t brush it on. But for smaller parts and small syringe tips a little line should melt just a small layer in each part to bind them together. The less used, the better and the faster it evaporates with a permanent bond.

They're called 1-2-3 blocks and they're available from a machinist tool supplier such as Shars.

Where did you source your ABS sheets from? I'd looked in the past but couldn't find any. Interesting tip, I had some ABS plastic repair to do. You can dissolve the ABS plastic in Acetone(Probably the solvent used in the "ABS Weld") and create a paste you can apply as a filler. Once the acetone evaporates, you're left with ABS plastic. A little rough sometimes, but you can sand/fill/repeat.
