Make interior trim look like new!

I bought a steering wheel with trim that looked like it came from a rough life. I decided to give it a second chance with some sand paper and a can of paint! You can do it too.

These prices change often by shop and by location, so shop around
*Some professionals will come in and say that you shouldn't use fine sand paper (800+ grit) right before painting, and that the grooves of a rougher sand paper will give the paint something to grab onto. And although I agree with this, I got my results by painting after sanding super fine and got really good results. I also know that the duplicolor paint is very light. This won't work in all circumstances. Thicker paints need lower grits.

Thanks for the tips! Doing this same exact job as a part of my steering wheel restore. I went all the way down to the white as recommended using 120 320 400 and 800 grit and will paint it with the same duplicolor recommended perfect match flat black paint.

Link doesn’t work for the paint BTW. Did you like this paint better than the “duplicolor vinyl and fabric” as far as the center console type plastic goes? I have an e46 as well.

@@BuiltForRedline I'd say it's worth the hassle then :P Besides, when you think about it, all kinds of DIY stuff is fun to make. With cars, you get to know your vehicle much better, which is always a bonus. Goes with everything, the more you tinker with something, the better you usually get to know it so yeah, very much worth the time to DIY. Also, good finish on that work, so money well saved.

How did the paint take? Is it pretty scratch resistant? I tried BBQ paint on a spare trim I had and whilst the colour looks good, I can easily scratch it off just with my short finger nails.

hey! Great question. I still have this very piece on my car. I wouldn't go out of my way to scratch it, but it's held up pretty well over the years with light noticeable wear. There are some light scurffs, but 4 years is good to me for a DIY. I would just re-sand and re-paint

@@BuiltForRedline I ended up wrapping it in satin vinyl wrap. It's not identical but that bottom trim doesn't match anything in the interior anyway lol.
