Make papers for a journal using methods inspired by the Korean art of Joomchi and Japanese Momigami.

This free video tutorial demonstrates a couple of lovely very simple techniques that produce beautiful, unique papers which can be coloured and embellished with a vast variety of additions.
The papers are limited only by your own imagination as all sorts of things can be incorporated into the papers using this technique.
This is a technique that I have only recently stumbled upon and was developed for a lesson on journaling that I was hosting. I am sorry but the art of Joomchi is Korean and not Japanese. A hint for UK watchers - "cellulose glue" is referred to by bookbinders as cellulose PASTE and in fact is wallpaper paste. Cheaper from your DIY rather than crafting shops!

A major step in making this kind of paper is to use olive oil when kneading. It changes the texture entirely and is very intriguing, actually toughens up the paper. If you use hair conditioner on paper bags, scrunch, let dry, you'll get paper that is similar to leather.

Thank you for the inspiration! While I'm waiting for an order of neutral adhesive to arrive I fused glitter between two pieces of white archival tissue using double sided fusible web I have on hand for sewing (a roll of STICK by Fairfield). A Pellon rep assured a mask maker that the fusible coatings in their web are all non-toxic and acid free. So I made a “sandwich” on my ironing board of cotton sheeting, tissue, glitter, double sided fusible web, another piece of tissue and topped it all with cotton sheet for protection. Ironed it 20 seconds on a cotton steam setting. The tissue fused without discoloring or scorching and it's flexible. I can hardly wait for the neutral glue to arrive. But I got antsy when I remembered how much fusible web I have. So this is just an fyi to share because you give us so much information on your channel. ❤

Thanks for all the info; much appreciated. Fusible webs or interfacing are fab for backing fabrics used in book covering. It stops the glues from going through to the fabrics and marking them. I really love the overlap of textile art and paper art and cannot believe how much potential it offers.😃 Enjoy X. @@LouiseJannetta 3D is what I like about tissue. I want to add an outline of a face onto the inkjet printed background of a collage but don't want to draw it on. Testing different mediums on a piece of tissue with that drawn face, turns out that matte Mod Podge gave me the best results. It's flat to the surface with just a hint of 3D and it doesn't feel sticky like the gloss MP. It even beat out Liquitex matte medium for clarity. So all of your experiments are well worth the time and a boon to us fans of your process. You inspire us to keep at it. 😅

I printed some lovely vintage wallpapers from the internet on plain 20 lb. copy paper and they came out great! I've just applied one of the pieces to the cover of a folio that I have in the works and it's wonderful, such a soft, pliable feel just like fabric. Amazing! :)

Fantastic! When i deadheaded my daisies, camomile, snapdragons, etc, i dried the seeds. I layered tgem between sheets of tissue papers that were cut ibto heart shapes, and labeled, "plant me" ❤ also dried long grass fir grass paper. I love this. Beautiful with a but if gold leaf flakes in it as well.

Beautiful papers! I have made them myself, but I was taught to put lotion on my hands and cover the papers with lotion ever so lightly, then let them dry after you crumple them up. I have also seen people use just straight up lanolin which is what they put in lotion. Also another ingredient I’ve seen used is glycerin. These all can be used for different effects. Some of them feel like cloth or suede when you are done. This is an awesome technique, thanks for showing us how to do it! It is very inspiring.

I used the cellulose paste very like wallpaper paste. It depends what you are using the process for. If it is for experimentation and discovery then a cheaper glue like wall paper paste is good (or the cellulose paste) But if it needs to be more archival then the methyl cellulose archival glues might be better. Hi Kacie it is just a cellulose powder that is mixed with water to make the paste. I get the glue from Turners art supplies in cromford Derbyshire. I dont think that it is listed on their website, but if you put cellulose paste or adhesive into your search engine you will get lots suppliers X hope this helps. I buy 500g bag and it lasts for ages Good luck with it all X

Just found your demo and what a pleasure -your ideas have sparked many more. I know you said there is no recipe for cellulose glue. Can i get the powder in the United States but can you tell me what are the proportions of powder to water. Is there a way to know that you added too much water and need more powder? I enjoyed your video throughly-thank you.

Instructions for the preparation of the cellulose glue. I use cellulose paste, similar to wallpaper paste, but you can use the wheat starch paste as well. Cellulose paste;- Sprinkle 20gsms into 600ml of water. Stir briskly to avoid lumps. I found that a very light sprinkling and a vigorous stir did the trick. Then leave for 24 hours for the powder to dissolve completely. Thin if necessary. Good luck with it. Wheat starch glue, you make that much like a white sauce but with only water, no butter. - Add flour to a small amount of cold water and mix until it is a smooth paste then add this to warm water on the stove. Heat this mix on the stove whilst continually stirring until the paste thickens. Good luck.

Thank you, glad you are enjoying it. Cellulose glue is really the same as wallpaper paste. Only the wallpaper paste has chemical additives t which make the glue non-archival. I use cellulose glue as it has no additives, is an entirely natural product and can be reversed in any renovation issues. I also use it because it is water-soluble, so it doesn't seal the papers, leaving them absorbent and responsive to water-based paints applied after drying. Sorry, but I haven't researched the other possibilities that you mention, and so I am not aware of their properties. You can look at their ingredients and see if they might be applicable. 😀

I’m not familiar with cellulose glue… can you use PVA or acrylic mediums for the adhesive? I’ve heard that cellulose can deteriorate or mold… if we’re not using a lot of it quickly, is there a way to store and preserve it? I know it must be mixed from a powder so I’m curious about a dependable recipe for those of us in the USA?

Cellulose glue or paste is very similar to wallpaper paste, it is more refined and works really well with fabrics as it remains flexible. I use the cellulose paste for all my experimental work as it remains flexible when it has dried.

@@sandyfranklin1123 PVA can be very brittle. However, the bookbinding PVA glues are designed to be flexible and to dry flat, although these speciality glues are more expensive. Bookbinders will mix bookbinding PVA glues with methylcellulose glue to have some of both properties. I have tried bookbinding PVA glues with the ordinary cellulose paste and it works really well. There is concern that the cellulose paste, which is really a natural starch paste, may go mouldy but the Japanese have been using natural starch pastes (Konnyaku starch) in their Momigami process for years. I am afraid that I can only speak from my experience and the glues that I have tried. There is always an issue of costs involved, especially when experimenting. If I could afford it I would use the archival glues eg the methylcellulose and the archival ph-neutral PVA bookbinding glues. All this is a bit of a minefield as the products are advertised and described as something amazing by each supplier. Sorry that this is not more conclusive and good luck with it all X

I have had prepared cellulose glue in a plastic container with a lid for at least a couple of weeks and it has been absolutely fine. If you are not using large quantities then there are more expensive and more archival glues about. The cellulose glue I use is very unsophisticated (often used for paper mache) and is pretty much just the glue you use for wallpapering (this has an anti-fungal ingredient)

@@LouiseJannetta Wow, thank you SO much for your comprehensive response! I’m still learning about materials after more than 20 years “playing with” various art forms! How do you store yours? I’ll investigate sources for cellulose glue/paste. I’m a bit of a rebel and I try to find alternatives! Several years ago I used a clear acrylic floor finish as adhesive over paper napkins in glass vases and it worked well and has stood the test of time quite well. I’ve never tried it on paper but am thinking about trying that too.

The glue is methylcellulose. It is an archival starch glue, is re-soluble and will absorb water-based pigments, e.g., watercolour, acrylic, gouache, etc. It is similar to wallpaper paste but with added chemicals. You can purchase this product from suitable art suppliers and from book-binding suppliers. It comes in a powder form, and you mix it with water. It is very similar, not quite sure what is in wallpaper paste glue but cellulose is just a cellulose starch paste. Wallpaper paste works well too though X

Hi Ena Mary, thanks for your interest in the channel and for binge-watching XXX. I use cellulose glue as it remains flexible when it's dry. I have also used it on some fairly demanding (in terms of glue) projects, and it has worked really well. It is a glue used with fabrics and it has archival qualities. The PVA glues can be good but a good one is expensive as you will need to go for a PVA glue that remains flexible and allows the work to dry without wrinkles and air pockets. For projects that are not going to be part of my exhibition pieces, I will use PVA craft glues as they are inexpensive and so allow more freedom to experiment. Hi Julie glad you like the videos. I get the glue from Turners art supplies in cromford Derbyshire. I dont think that it is listed on their website, but if you put cellulose paste or adhesive into your search engine you will get lots suppliers X hope this helps. I buy 500g bag and it lasts for ages.

As I go on with the Joomchi and Momigami I realise that there is reason behind the decision to use the materials used but also that there are many other materials that contribute attributes to this process. 😀Hi again Sue, if you need good strong glue but also some wiggle room in the time it takes to fix it so that you have a window of choice and the possibility to remedy mistakes a good glue is a bookbinding glue mixed with the cellulose 50% to 50%. This makes a lovely glue X

I used the cellulose paste very like wallpaper paste. It depends what you are using the process for. If it is for experimentation and discovery then a cheaper glue like wall paper paste is good (or the cellulose paste) But if it needs to be more archival then the methyl cellulose archival glues might be better. I find this idea of yours very inspiring. I started to learn to do watercolour painting and now I have this thing about making my own watercolour paper. I know they use a size or gelatine in the making. I wonder if your cellulose glue would be a good idea. Have you painted on any of your paper yet?

Hi Maureen, glad you have been inspired and homemade watercolour paper sound wonderful. I don't know much about attempting to make watercolour paper. I think the thing to consider is that the paper must remain sensitive to the watercolour pigment and process. It will depend on how you want the paint to respond, for example you may want the paper to be absorbent or you may want it to be more sized so that the pigment doesn't seep into the paper so much. Cellulose glues will do the trick of holding the fibres together and used sparingly would not seal the paper. But I love a good experiment and you may well come across something special in your quest for lovely papers. Good Luck and all the very best, Louise

@@eleanorsegal257 Hi Eleanor, I have used dried hydrangea petals placed between sheets of tissue paper and they work beautifully, dries and pressed flowers would be fab. Just use the cellulose glue on the tissue paper place on the pressed flowers and cover it with the second piece of tissue paper. You can make the papers more translucent using nut oil. Good luck. Great faux papers! I’m just curious why cellulose glue? I know it is more archive. The original papers used are not archival. Is there a structural reason for using cellulose glue or is it your preferred glue? Thanks!

I use the cellulose because it remains water-soluble and does not leave a seal on the surface of the papers, or at least not an impenetrable seal. That way I can still add pigments that can be absorbed by the papers and fabrics so that the materials themselves respond to your methods. I would use wood working PVA for anything that required a very good permanent adhesion and animal size glue to use with oil paints. When I use the cellulose glue in this instance I want to apply a diluted acrylic pigment to some of the papers that I have made. I really want the book pages and the plain papers to absorb the pigment. Hope all this helps and many thanks for watching. All the best Louise X

The glue is cellulose glue and there is no recipe;- just very lightly sprinkle the cellulose glue powder onto cold water and stir. If you add too much at a time it goes lumpy (but you can pass it through a strainer or sieve). Then it is important to prepare the glue 12 hours at least in advance to ensure that all the powder is diluted into the mixture. Good luck and enjoy, all the best, Louise

Hi Dee and yes sorry Joomchi is Korean and Momigami is Japanese. I am realy new to this and have become very excited by the art of kneading and felting paper.
