Amazing tutorial, thanks!! The speed of which you make all these things is mind boggling. I'm working on a commission to make a mechatank for 3D print, and every minuscule part of it takes me 30mins to do - and they're not as detailed as yours. Well.. that's why I'm here. I'm can sculpt monsters and characters well, but this hardsurface modeling is a completely different beast. And yeah I've tried to use hardsurface sculpting, but it never turns out like I want it.

Thanks! I've been hard surfacing modeling for years so it's all I know and the parts I make are usually in my head or part of it is which helps. Maybe find a source of reference images for mechanical pieces either real or fake you can look at while modeling. The various tools like extrude, inside, loop cut are all like the sculpting tools - when you learn them you'll know which to use for the right job.

Yep! Most of my star wars kitbash is parts made from Falcon reference photos. Love all the parts on it.

Thank you! And thanks for the donation on my gumroad. I'll be doing a part 2 video for the pixel art shader on some even cooler ways to use it.

@@DanielGrovePhoto Sweet! Can’t wait to see! I think animating the shader would be epic (I’m planning on messing around with that).

@@shalomormsby yes it is fun though not as smooth as I'd like. That's one thing I'll cover in the 2nd video.

This was so awesome thank you! It’s strange how you like to think about what the item is for yet make something just essentially random. I hope making greeblies will help reduce my realism 😂.
@DanielGrovePhoto

Some amount of realism helps when designing fictitious things especially in the star wars style where you can see much if the inner workings and things don't just magically work, actually break, and aren't all perfectly encased in slick metal curves like other scifi styles. I think it helps convince people's mind that it could be a functioning ship and it helps me balance details around a ship for things like coolant pipes, ports, connections, electric hardware etc.

I'm trying to learn Blender and separately I've also been working on putting together a costume for Galaxy's Edge, so this video could not have come at a better time.

Don't give up on Blender it's an amazing program to learn and keep up with. It's advancing more quickly than the other big names out there so it's pretty exciting these recent years to see what it's doing. And that's so cool! Be sure you don't look too good or they'll kick you out hehe. I think the rule is you can't look like established characters.

Every time I see a new video from Daniel Grove Photo, if the subject even remotely interests me, I typically drop everything and watch it. The main reason is because of the presentation quality. I'm able to follow along. I'm able to understand the narration. The videos move without moving too fast. I just can't find anything wrong with them. Critical info is never skipped over. I could go on forever listing the plus points. They seem to be endless.

For me the bevel on the fan blades dosn't work it bevels towards the center of the blade not the top. But other than that, great video !

With the first model, you added a second cylinder for the center piece. How do you decide when to add another primitive or continue with the original ? Some tutorials say if your model has separate components in real life then you should use a separate primitive for each component, other tutorials seem to make amazingly complex models with just the initial primitive ?

I'm a "messy modeler" which means I don't care about many of the traditional rules, I don't care about ngons etc. So for a part like this that doesn't move I make it all one mesh. If I need to separate them for different materials I use vertex groups sometimes. Ctrl L is handy for grabbing a separate piece within one mesh. I always start with a primitive(s) for mechanical stuff like in this video.
