Nicely done! Good video too.... hey, just FYI..... Danish oil has poly in it... Mahoney’s Walnut oil is all natural. 👍🏼

So many great features on this tray, Bruce! Of course that spalted oak is incredible, really like how you used the French curves, and I am really happy you left the live edge - such a cool little feature! Howell is pretty lucky!

Thanks so much, Bernie! The walnut oil really does smells good...it is pretty faint, which I like. I've been using it on a lot of things recently, and I'm considering that as the finish for my upcoming workbench. What do you think? I know a lot of people use boiled linseed oil, but I can't stand the smell of that stuff. ha

Thank you! If you’re just giving it a quick rinse, it would be fine. Just fry it off immediately. I would probably just brush it off though. I keep that kind of thing in my Amazon Storefront, but here is an affiliate link for the Mahoney’s Walnut oil I use: amzn.to/3rc5wkm

That is beautiful wood Bruce. Not to be critical, but seasonal wood movement may cause issues with the bottom. I love the laser engraving - well done!
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I thought about that, but with the panel only being 3/8” thick, I’m thinking wood movement will be pretty minimal.

Do you recall the thickness of the bottom panel? I would like to do 3/8ths of an inch but not sure that is thick enough.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 4 жыл бұрын
I don't remember the exact thickness. I want to say it was more like 5/8". I think 3/8" might be too thin for a tray this large, but might work for one that is smaller.

Bruce! This turned out beautifully! That spalting is incredible! I had to go back to the beginning of the video to see what species of wood you used. I'm ashamed to admit that I have never done a project with any sort of hardwood. My knowledge is really lacking in that area. I just looked up and found a hardwood dealer in Vermont and I'm excited to try my hand at some "real" woodworking 😋! Where do you get your wood?
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Zach! This wood was white oak and the most highly spalted stuff I’ve ever seen. And still really solid. I’ve bought from a few places before, including on Craigslist. This pile of white oak came from a local guy who had 3,000 bdft of it. I bought 800 bdft and this one was in the pile. Lucky find.
