With no central heat or water at all in an abandoned house, i find that metal lids and cans get rusty and would eventually break through to let food spoil. So I'm wondering if a simple solution would be to turn the filled jars upsidedown and quickly dip in melted wax to protect the metal from moisture? I guess cans would be best rotated before rust gets too far. I'm a disabled veteran Air Force age 72 in Pittsburgh.
@penelopegrier507310 ай бұрын
Now that’s an idea I didn’t think of.
@ddean56566 ай бұрын
A wax seal would help keep the moisture out... However, the temperature differentials can often affect the taste and nutritional value of the foods.
@annmarygarcia13213 ай бұрын
There are plastic lids. It does let a tiny bit of air in but not too horribly. If you're going to use in 6 months to a year, the plastic lids would work great.

I searched for 3 years for a solution for rusting cans. I have a damp basement and a shipping container that can leak a bit and cause rust. I think I just found an answer that will suit me. Food Safe spray silicone comes in 2 forms, one stays "wet" like WD 40 but the other "dries" which I think is my solution. I realize I will have to remove and then replace the paper label (if possible) but there are always sharpie markers for identification. I have a regular grocery store can of corn I left out on the top of the basement stairs as a rust test since early 2021 and it is completely rusted. The metal isn't giving way yet but I don't think it will be long. My canning jar rings are rusting right on my jars on the kitchen shelves. I am rehabbing a house so my humidity level is probably higher than most.

Maybe dehydrated food in mylar bags in buckets bins and jars is the answer...although they are very vulnerable if breached. Good to know about food-safe silicon spray!

Just a little tip all the information that you wrote on the lid of a jar you can write on the side of the jar with a sharpie pen and it washes off. I know you can use alcohol to get it off the lid but the longer it’s on the lid it doesn’t all come off with alcohol.

I wish ya'll as creators would get together and maybe do a week of ideas from different people😊 These are wonderful & smart for anything..our best ideas for camping trips! Hi Gloria! I've been collecting Thrive Life ingredients for a little while and it's kind of exciting to be able to put together these meals in a jar. Sometimes the number 10 cans are cheaper than buying the pantry cans. Sometimes not. I have several number 10 cans of diced potatoes and broccoli. The beef too. The chicken is not cheaper in the number 10 cans though. Happy meal planning!

You can also vacuum seal these jars if you put the dry ingredients in first so the machine doesn't suck in any food dust as it vacuums the jar, if you don't want to buy oxygen absorbers since they're a one shot and done item. You can also keep your opened freeze dried items in glass jars using the vacuum pack or your oxygen absorbers to keep the air away from the contents.

I make 5 quart jars each of beef stew, chicken noodle soup, chili, veg soup, chili and spaghetti each month. Make one after other.its cheaper n same heat. After cooled to room temp ill freeze all but keep 1 of each in fridge. I eat olde fashioned oatmeal boil add 1/4 brown sugar add banana aorange on side for breakfast. For lunch i eat one of what i cooked. Peanut butter sandwich n iced Sun Tea for lunch. For Supper popcorn. Most work is done so dont need fat creating meal for fuel. As u take one out of fridge take 1 of that kind out of freezer n put n fridge. Itll b thawed n 2 days n b refrigerated n safe when ready to cook.
