I like this idea, but really wonder about long term effects from the contaminated water. I'm not a water expert, but see that rain water stains cement from the asphalt shingles. I don't want to be using that water to grow food I eat etc. Can someone explain this potential issue??
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
I cannot explain that, however, I may be overly simplifying, but when it rains that water is already watering the garden and flowers. I am using it a lot more versus maybe one rain every week or two, so there could be a difference. It is something worth looking into.

Dadnology at its finest...nice work Chuck I've been looking at something similar to collect rain water 👊👊👊

This is an easy thing to do. Not as sophisticated as others, but it gets the job done.

Nice idea. Awesome vid. I always like the lessons-learned at the end of the video. Just to be safe, I would apply the plumbers caulk on the inside of the can as well. I wonder how often you'll need to clean the barrel? 🤔 Would be interested in an update video in the summer. Hope it helps the erosion!!
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
I applied caulk inside as well. The can is a bit flimsy so the seam isn't great. I will do an update for sure.

Cool project. I deal with lots of errosion so look forward to seeing how this area turns out. I am just going to use sprigs from my own bermuda once I correct a few issues around the yard.

I'm waiting on my delivery of sand and top soil which will help this area for sure. I'll do an update at the end of season.

Great work Chuck. I thought about doing something similar until I found out it's illegal in this state to catch rain water... 😒
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
That's silly... considering where you live. There's no shortage.

@@DaddingAllDay nope and the state wants to charge people that have wells for water also.. it's ludicrous

Inspiring! How will you solidify that spout? I have a standing water issue that this could solve. Thanks!

I'm not sure... maybe washers and more caulk. Not 100%. This is not my forte, so it's trial and error.

Thanks for the video. I am looking to do the same thing. The town I live in just increased the sewer rate by 49.7% which is tied to how much water I use in a month. Based on last month then my water and sewer will be close to $150 this month. This is the first year I am trying to raise a garden and now I need to watch how much water I use. Anyway when I go to Home Depot I am like the kids LOL. I got to walk in purchase what I needed to get an leave and not look around.
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
I think most of us are like that in home depot, LOL! Just check to make sure there are no laws or ordinances preventing you from collecting rain water. Some places it's illegal. We had a huge storm a few weeks back so mine fell over. I'm working on creating a more permanent structure to hold the barrel.
@clemarr2 жыл бұрын
@@DaddingAllDay If you do create a more permanent structure I hope you do a video. I enjoy watching an learning what others come up with. Never thought about local laws that might prevent me from collecting rain water. I will have to check. I know there are laws anymore for just about everything but wonder why there are local laws preventing collecting rain water?
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
@@clemarr From the light research I've done, it prevents natural water from reaching the streams and all that environmental stuff.

what size of the discharge hose? did you use anything to hold the discharge hose to secure in place from falling off the can? i'm planning to make my own rain barrel, so new to this thing
@DaddingAllDay2 жыл бұрын
It was a 1 inch hose and I used a small screw and plummers caulk to secure it to the barrel. It works really well.
