Holy shit, this got randomly recommended to me, this legend is still posting? I remember discovering this guy like nearly a decade ago when I DESPERATELY wanted to learn how to sing whilst sounding like a Chainsaw had a baby with a Raven so I was glued to this channel for a few years- fast forward to today and I have sung on stage many times to warm and positive reception and done musicals. Even though I have gotten a lot of help over the years from professionals and amateur singers one of the biggest influences was you. Thank you, Eric!

thank you so much for sharing this is us! I've been wondering about this exact thing. My music director always talks about it, but I've never heard it described as how your voice can cut through other sound and it makes a lot of sense to me now. Thank you!

Hi Eric, so the 1st step is lower belly in with exhale, while upper abs below sternum sort of go out to counterbalance? Thanks, greetings from Denmark!

kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4LdY4Z7g7Vqpbssi=Y0R6uiX3NZUxiy63 what do you make of all this Eric ? how much do you think this is all relevant to singing rnb and pop styles ? i dont think there should be much difference in technique based on genre but this is a lot and there is a lot of this is right and this is terrible sort of vibe here...

Respectfully, I completely and utterly refuse to engage in “The Pedagogy Wars” on social media with other voice teachers 🙏🏽😅. If you have a specific question about technique or vocal health, I’d be happy to answer it. But I’m not gonna watch anyone’s video to critique it. 🫶🏽😌

@@ericarceneaux fair enough. i have literally zero interest in drama im just trying to figure this singing thing out ! i love classical and black american or american or popular however you want to call it styles and i am seeking to reconcile all these different schools. i want to believe that technique is broadly the same irrespective of genre so i can sing all of the music i love. one small example. what jose calls falsetto i call head voice. sounds like the chords are nicely connected to me, but he seems to regard that as falsetto. then when he belts in that register or has a loud chestlike resonance, he calls it head voice. it would be nice if we all used terms the same way, maybe we wouldnt all talk past each other and we could converge on basic principles that will underpin a singers progress without all these seperate "camps".

@@Johnwilkinsonofficial It sounds to me like you understand very well what is happening, and I totally get your frustration; the fact is, within the world of vocal pedagogy, folks largely use terms based on tradition and/or anchoring bias. And they vehemently fight to defend their ideas with the zeal of someone deeply brainwashed into a cult. There is no universally agreed-upon lexicon, and there will likely never be one in our lifetime 😅🤷🏽‍♂️ Because I understand this, I make heavy use of demonstration (myself singing or playing clips of other vocalists) to illustrate what *I* mean when referencing certain technical terms. And, in my Udemy Courses, Patreon, and soon-to-be-released book, I will often give clear science-based definitions of exactly what I mean. In my private classes, I constantly make it clear that I’m well-aware of the many names of a technique or concept: “Falsetto? …head voice? Call it ‘Henry’ if you want, as long as you know how to access it healthily,” is a common catchphrase of mine 😄 When I work with clients one-on-one, part of the work is establishing a shared, mutually agreed-upon, lexicon; I often ask, “what does this term mean to you?”-not for arguments sake, but to merely make sure we mean the same thing. I also make clear my intention for their sensory experience. Sometimes, my students say the word “falsetto” or “support”, and we just laugh, cuz we both know how loaded these term are-AND we know what WE mean. At the end of the day, use whatever terms you want. Is your voice free? Are you artistically satisfied with your facility? Is your instrument healthy? If we’ve achieved these things, we’re golden 😌👌🏽

@@Johnwilkinsonofficial And, yes, in my opinion (based on 25 years of professional experience), I do believe that freedom is freedom. Sure there are some intentional adjustments necessary for the unique aesthetic demands of certain genres. But the foundation of healthy technique-to me-is all the same: Effortless full-body breathing (cultivated and maintained via daily breathwork), reflexive body engagement, and healthily adducted vocal folds. 🙏🏽😌
