Not exactly an unbiased comparison. I’m not mad, but the sponsorship should have been mentioned right up front. 👍

The problem with Harvey is they are sending all this free stuff to KZbinrs to demonstrate. I ordered a dust collector and if said it would ship in about a month in a half. again I knew it ahead of time so I had no issue. They charged me fully instantly and it posted. A week later I decided to go with Oneida. I cancelled and they wanted to keep 5% for cancellation. I don’t care that it was their “policy”. It handing shipped and wouldn’t for 90 days so I shouldn’t have been charged. It shouldn’t charge until it ships.

They all charged before even shipped. We consumers need to fight back against these bull crabs.

I had a Harvey and when I used it with my Hammer A3-31 I spent much more time cleaning out the jammed intake on the Harvey than actually using it. At the time I had knives on the A3 and have since installed a Shelix head. Also, the Harvey did not have enough power to suck everything from the A3. I found the dustbin to be somewhat of a pain to empty and install a new bag. However, I did REALLY like the bin full sensor. Also, the intake port on the Harvy really sticks out into the work area. If you replace the supplied input with a 6" pipe it still sticks out a bunch. I'm in the process of restoring a used ClearVue 1800 with a 15" impeller, I wish it had the 16" impeller, I could upgrade to a 16", and per ClearVue it would cost about $650. I'll see how the 15" works and possibly upgrade. With the two units you have, it is a bit difficult to perform a direct comparison. Grizzly also offers larger motors and a 16" impeller (for more money). Also, it would be rather easy to install a bin sensor on the Grizzly (IMHO).

Long time fan, first time commenting. Far too often I see people making videos saying this is good, this is bad, instead it would be helpful to think about what features does A have that B doesn’t and in what situations that would make sense to own. For example, anyone who has a traditional cyclone would have to completely reconfigure their ducting to install a new design. I get it, that isn’t what the sponsor wants, but you can’t let sponsors dictate a balanced review, especially when it clearly hasn’t been used yet. Keep up the good work and I’ll be looking forward to another review after you have used it for a few cycles to understand more about it with your workflow.

I think the big benefit of a machine like this is the space it takes up. I know for a lot of people having a workbench above their dust collector is a huge deal, it’s almost 10 Sq feet of bench space gained VS 8 Sq feet or floor space lost to a different style machine. The dust post location definitely would change an existing ducting layout, but considering the competitors pricing, I think it’s a good option! I didn’t want this to be seen as a review, more as just information about the two machines that are similarly priced. I chose to put the Harvey where my cyclone was, not replace my cyclone completely with it. I did that to reclaim the vertical space above it. Thanks for watching!

Nice comparison! One quick question on the Harvey: any chance you have a current meter with a max function and could measure the peak surge current on startup? Trying to figure out what it can share a circuit with and their 20A breaker rating seems super conservative for 1.5HP 220 motor. Many thanks!

Especially because it sounds to have a soft start it probably is pretty gentle on inrush side of things.

It is a 2hp 3phase motor with a vfd so the motor itself draws low amperage and is more energy efficient but recommended to use 20A breaker on a dedicated circuit to convert to 3-phase 2hp motor.

I don't have either one but I am in the market for dust collector. As you said get one with HEPA. The Grizzly does have a true HEPA, the Harvey does not. Filter can't pass no larger that 0.3 micron to be HEPA, So the Harvey filter passes 0.3 to 0.5 micron (from their web site, check details), looks like not as safe a machine as Grizzly with HEPA. Anything larger that 0.3 micron is dangerous unless exhausted to the outside. Sure the Harvey looks nicer LOL

Apples & oranges. Ex. You don't like the dust barrel because you overfill, looks problematic if you overfill either, the new collector looks way more issue when you use it improperly. I could imagine the timer is more about collector location and how you operate your shop. All that written, the Harvey totally wins because they're giving them out for free.

Not really. Price is comparable, goal is the same and specs should be comparable but aren't. One is smaller, has higher airflow and is easier to empty after the sensor gives a sign. There is a clear winner I think, it is just a nice bonus that it was given for free. The video was really self-explanatory, all pros and cons are discussed in it.

I have a 3x5 CNC (i also use this to flatten large boards instead of a planer), a drum sander, table saw, band saw, radial arm saw. I built a cyclone system using Oneida cyclone and a 55 gal drum. Empty this about every 2 weeks. Both of the machines you reviewed dust bins are too damn small.

Keeps minimizing the price. It’s 1 day after video posted and machine is $400 more than he says plus it’s $360 for shipping. He says $2,300 but it’s actually $3,250 after shipping/tax. I’m bummed because he made it sound like it was within my budget. Cyclone it is.

Harvey pricing is wild. If you don't like the price, wait. It'll likely fall into your budget sooner or later.

If you want to get a custom quote just call their support. The prices on the site have email subscriber coupons factored in so anything on the site comes down 5-10% for email subscribers.

I've seen people get creative with ducts and blast gates so they don't need to hook up hoses to the clean outs every time. They just flip a couple blast gates and twist the red knobs which are about waist high.

Nice review concerning the specs on both machines. Have you been able to give it a good test with your planer? I mill rough lumber directly from lumber mill so I need a system that will handle what the planer is throwing at it. Have you posted an updated video after using it or everyday milling?

I'd like to know how he feels about it after 3 months too. I know I love mine. I've been running one for 2 years now with no issues at all. With the hose on it is much quieter than with the port wide open and I have it under my work bench. I've also never used it at it's highest setting, even with my planer.

Whats interesting is i need a vacuum to clean the vacuum of fine dust particles.
@DeanRockne
@DeanRockne 2 жыл бұрын
You can actually use the dust collector to clean itself out. The cyclone gets 99% of the fine dust before it gets to the filters, so recirculating air through it while agitating the filters will eventually leave almost all of the dust in the bin.

The only thing Harvey makes that’s even decent, but they can’t get the replacement bags sized correctly. Harvey makes terrible machines, you should stop supporting them.
