In this video I make a floating shelf using a slab of live edge wood. I used an all wood designed bracket to keep it simple and leave it accessible to anyone with a wood shop! This is a very similar design to my other floating shelf projects, without the steel and welding!

Just a tip for others that might make this... With this type of shelf bracket, even steel or commercially made, if your wall is not very true, or if you're over a joint in the drywall, for instance, when you tighten the bracket against the wall it will conform to the shape of the wall and can cause the rods to splay in or out. I've had to shim out low spots to remedy this in the past. Another reason for having the routed pocket in the back slightly deeper than the thickness of the plywood. 👍🏻

Also, routing out the drywall and mounting your "bracket" directly to the studs will prevent future sagging from the drywall being compressed/smashed.

Offsetting the center pin to one side by an inch making the 3 dowels asymmetrical will be a fool proof way of keeping the top as the top without questioning which side is up.

Chris, what about just cutting off an inch off the back of the shelf, and then putting the dowels in that cut off and screwing the cut-off to the wall, so that it is seam-less and less work as well.
@MakeEverything
@MakeEverything 4 жыл бұрын
Thats also a good method, I like the idea of not cutting a seam in the actual slab, so there is less chance of that gap ever showing up again!

Thanks for the video for those of us who don't weld yet. How much do you think the shelf can safely hold with the wood dowels? Also, what is your orbital sander setup? It looks like it does a nice job with dust collection. Keep up the good work!
@MakeEverything
@MakeEverything 4 жыл бұрын
Id say this setup could easily hold 40lbs. I might torture test this one on a wall until it fails and report back! Im using the Mirka Deros 6" sander and an older Bosch dust extractor. Thanks for watching!

Sanding the corners round is faster than a chisel? Maybe, probably not, the space is oversized anyway so that cut isn't machinist tolerance. Push the dowel in flush on glue up since you took the care to make them fit that well. Bending the brads a few times will break them off below the surface, no need to buy a proprietary tool to remove brads. The basic build and design is good, nice work.

Interesting. I need to hang an antique hand-hewn chestnut beam for a mantel that's roughly 6"x6"x8', maybe 120#. Would you trust this dowel method for something this heavy? Maybe instead of plywood as the cleat a 2x4?

3 questions... Question 1, What's up with the mouthwash in the shop? Question 2, How much weight would you say that shelf can hold? My 3rd question is possibly the most important (and long winded), I'm redoing the flooring in my house and getting rid of the 1980s stereo stack under the TV. The TV is mounted on the wall and I want to do a live edge shelf under it to match the flooring. The shelf will be mounted to a wall that is roughly 7' wide with about 2' of wall at 45° angles on each end of it. I'm thinking of just using a pocket hole jig to drill holes at each stud (including the 2 45° walls). The depth of the shelf would be appropriately 1'2"... With the shelf supported on each end at the leading edge, would this method stand the test of time? The only things the shelf will be supporting is a cable box, a blu-ray player, and the occasional Christmas decoration. Thanks in advance..

Nice work! I wonder if cutting an X deep into the end of the dowels on the bandsaw would give them sort of a spring action so they'd be able to absorb some irregularities while remaining tight.
