Hi Makenzie! I love your work! I have a quick question for your jump rings: do you pre-tin your jump rings or buy them pre-tinned? I bought silver covered copper wire, but I am not sure if this is the same as buying copper wire and tinning it yourself? Or am I able to just buy a bunch of jump rings from a craft store and call it a day? I am wondering if they patina the same if you are not pre-tinning yourself. Sorry for so many questions! Absolutely correct. You have to use a lead free solder. So you have to read up on ALL the options available for lead free solders and figure out which ones sound the best for you. You specifically will be looking for the best jewelry making solders. Taking type/finish/etc into account, if you wont be using any patina type products.

I would bet many of us would have loved this video before we started. Very good info! Through time we learn what we love through not loving things....lol. I think one very important thing that needs reiterated for beginners or potential futures, is, its not just one and done.... this is an ongoing, constantly expensive hobby. That $20 roll of tape , lasts MAYBE a week. That $30 solder, maybe a week...lol.. Grinder bit replacements etc .... glass prices to ship....omg are we lucky to have semi local shops. I can buy 4+ extra 12x12 for the price of shipping in most cases. I know finding glass was not on my list of what to's when starting but got super lucky...to live pretty close to Youghiogheny. Unrelated note, grinders. I don't know how many times I have seen ppl ask if they can just us their Dremel to grind....lmao!! UM

Just ordered a soldering mat, usually I just put my pattern pinned on a piece of drop ceiling piece (but they don't sell just one anymore) and pin and solder ......if you have a project with many pieces and you need to pin the pieces together....what do you put underneath the mat?? So scraps is all up to you. What you will and won't make use of. Grinder bit is when you feel it's not grinding well anymore. You can tell when it's working like shit or your having to push harder on the grinder. Thank you for watching!

Love your videos! I'm am really getting into stained glass during this pandemic, and your videos are the best! One question.... If you make a mistake with solder, can you remove it and start over? Would you have to refoil the piece?

Well before I answer that, what kind of mistake are you thinking of? If you for some reason had to resolder it, there is no way to remove it. Melting it off would destroy the integrity of the foil, so it all has to be removed and redone. Foil and solder.

This is my mistake - I put a jump ring on in the wrong place, and it fell off (piece was too heavy) - I have since learned (through you :-) ) that the ring needs to be near a joint. Ok so for this instance you can absolutely just add another jump loop in the right place. Having to redo the entire piece is worst case scenario, one step above trashing the whole piece. And your welcome! Happy to help!

Hmm, I don't think there is any other result but matte black. I do not use polish or look to change the metal/patina so I don't think I'm the right person to help for this. I suppose it depends how matte are we talking? It will never reflect light like silver metal, as it's black.

Well, I don't normally suggest any ways to specifically hang other then just straight up permanent solutions. (Cover my own ass) Unfortunately anything but, will always be a gamble. Heavy duty suction cups, heavy duty command hooks, etc, all can vary according to how its applied or taken care of. So I always say, permanent hook. Nail, anchor, etc. Otherwise, I'm not responsible. You know what I mean? I use to include heavy duty suction cups and commands, which were fine, never had a complaint. But I still shifted to be safe then sorry.

Oh ok ok, I'm so sorry, I totally misunderstood your question, more so about the actual hanger then the wall hook. Ok so yes, that way is absolutely safe (always according to weight) and using something like fishing line, or a stretch clear just always double up those crimps for safety and to "knot" the wire. Does that make sense?

Absolutely. I would take 0000 or 000 steel wool and go over it. What you are seeing is basically metal mold... its from moisture. Honestly just hitting it with heat when you are working might just turn out fine depending on the severity of it. Test it.... But if not try the steel wool.

😂😂😂😫😫😫 oh nooo!!!! WELL, unfortunately it does absolutely come with the territory. However, the more you learn to handle your tools/glass, and get to practice, the less it will happen. I don't get splinters often at all anymore, but I do absolutely slice my fingers almost everytime I grind glass. I usually grind about 12 to 15 pieces at a time, so its expected. lol. Now that I'm a couple years in, I can dig my hands around in a glass scrap bin and not get cut. I will also say that now, I don't even jump or flinch when I do get sliced as my fingertips have almost become desensitized a bit? You'll absolutely get used to the feeling. But practice makes perfect, expect alot of cuts and splinters over the next year. lol. Remember, the most dangerous pieces are the ones we can't see. Everytime we break, cut or grind glass, there are tiny shards flying everywhere. Those are the ones that can become painful/dangerous if infected and not removed. So just remember to sweep up your desk after every single break, and then throughly vacuum when your all done! 🖤 MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN!!!!! Welcome to the world of glass!!!!

Yea, if your only freehanding and making suncatchers, a ruler or add ons are not needed! Everyone does stained glass differently and everyone has there own way to do it! So no matter what anyone tells you, if your piece is structurally sound then how you get there is up to you! Whatever works best for you!

This looks so eays. My solder runs every where. Its drips and pools on the back of the pieces that are layed down. The tip of my soldering iron doesn't pick up the bead sometimes or just drops it. My table is full of solder beads and splashes. Its chaos. Why is this happening? I've only used the iron 2 times now. Any tips?

Hello! Well, it sounds like your soldering iron is definitely not tinned, therefore not holding a bead! Get that tip tinned or your going to burn a hole through your iron tip! What kind of solder are you using and what temp are you running your iron at? Then I would say for the pooling,are you referring to gaps in between glass pieces? ....don't get overwhelmed or discouraged, just walk away from the project for a bit and we'll figure it all out!!

@@MakenzieHallie thanks for your reply! I've bought all my stuff in a stained glass store. The tin says 50/50 and my soldering iron has one setting, it just plugs in and goes. Its an 80 watts "Weller" iron made for Tiffany work. Its operating temperature is 932f. I only started this new hobby last week so I'm only using thrifted glass and old mirrors for now. I'm having an absolute blast! Its so much fun, your videos are so incredibly helpfull. I'll get some tinner for my iron and maybe the 60/40 tin, maybe that will help.

Holy moley the iron was from the stained glass store & just runs at 932° Fahrenheit????? That is insanely hot!! The melting point for solder is about 370° and your iron needs to be not a few degrees hotter! I would absolutely suggest an iron where you can see and control the temperature as it will fluctuate and change over time no matter what. And needing both 50/50 solder and 60/40 for stained glass, means the temp has to be changed on your iron accordingly. I would absolutely get some tinner and a tip cleaner on hand and use it often to keep that tip nice and new! Im so glad your finding the videos helpful and having so much fun!!!! Agreed, and if wrapping the outer edges isnt working, you could always wrap a band right around the center of the sea glass piece and solder that! 🖤

Also one more question. I found a really cool piece on eBay. It's cheap and it's pretty big for the price. Only thing is, the solder job is complete shit. Almost like it wasn't fluxed or something like you were saying.. or just made by an amateur. It's old and very beautiful overall .Is it possible to redo the solder to make the lines cleaner and stronger ?

😭😭😂😂 ok I will NOT say hobby lobby, although it's something you may be forced into, if you have no glass stores!!! IF your just getting into the hobby, give etsy a try and just order small squares from places that have a flat shipping rate, for like 10 bucks. I have only ever ordered glass online from 1 seller on etsy, Lesleysglasshut, she's great. I find shipping and handling charges from big places just make it impossible to do, so I avoid glass buying from big online retailers. SO with that being said, you need to search and I mean SEARCH for any hidden local stained glass or hobby stores! Otherwise your option is online, etsy or big name retailers.
