50 some years ago (is that even possible?) when I was learning stained glass, I would have saved lots of $$$ if the teacher used your teaching techniques. They are so much simpler and make more sense. All the broken glass trying to cut curves - all that wasted money! Thank you Makenzie for a thoroughly enjoyable video. Kind Karen

I wanted to say that yours was the first cutting-stained-glass video I viewed, and quite honestly Makenzie, you did a fantastic job of explaining everything down to the finest details, which was exactly what I needed as a noobie artist. Even your photography was par excellent as you made sure to give close-ups whenever the details required as such. So thank you very much for taking the time to produce such a professional video as this. Now I feel I have the requisite confidence I need to venture forth into this exciting endeavor. I subscribed halfway through the video - and so should anyone else out there. Thanks again.

I’ve noticed you use a pulling down action when demonstrating the nippers/grozing pliers. I used to use them like that, nipping very small pieces from a piece of glass. That resulted in exploding glass everywhere and jagged edges. But I recently asked about it at my local glass shop and the person helping me showed me that it’s a straight pull-apart motion. I tried it there and it worked beautifully! I’m not sure if pulling the piece off with the nippers is the action you use, or the pull-down/nip action, but I found it super useful knowledge. I was just using the nippers wrong! Also, the flat side should be on top of the glass. I tried it with the flat side on the bottom and it made the glass explode. But flat on top it worked to pull a small piece away with no explosions!
@MakenzieHallie4 жыл бұрын
Hello Dawn! Yes! You can use them pulling out or down, also use them to grind away at the glass (intentionally exploding) bits off, like you would cutting glass with scissors! I just don't use them at all! Never been a fan, I am a 1 cut kind of gal! Thank you for watching!! 🖤

Wholly crap... your video is soooooo good. The fine details are fantastic. I recently purchased running pliers from amazon to help with my current project. I was squeezing as hard as I could and I couldn't get it to crack the glass. Figured I got a bad pair. After you explained the top of the pliers should be concaved a bit I ran out to my garage and after taking the plastic bumpers off I noticed they have zero curve. Guess I ordered the wrong item. I just ordered the newest runners from Brier so hoping I get to experience that tiny "click" when the glass separates. Funny that you hate the grosser pliers because that is my main tool. Hopefully the new runners change the way I break glass. Keep up the GREAT videos. Just saw one with a glass church. You got my creative mind thinking and also thank you for also mentioning and suggesting for others to make their own designs. I agree that that is what makes it so personal.

Mackenzie, why haven’t I seen your videos before. I was obsessed with learning the correct way of using stained glass tools and how to cut glass etc, and armed myself with tools from the US (I paid more in shipping than the tools themselves), but I just didn’t find really good, informative videos, and just used my nippers instead to make mosaic pieces. This was over two years ago, but because we moved house during the lockdowns, all my stained glass stuff was packed away. Well, I shall now watch your videos and get back on track. You are an inspiration to all beginners.

Hi, I just subscribed and gave you a thumbs up... You have good tips to consider that will definitely help... I use to do stain glass back in the day 20 + years ago but because of my job (lots to do with a ton of pressure) it had to take a back seat... I now have time and I'm getting back into it and KZbin is helping a lot with getting re-familiar with the art... I still have my grinders, tools and a crate full of glass and just itching to get back into it... I'll definitely be checking out your other videos... Glad you're taking the time to share... back in the day of no KZbin, I would of had to sign up for a class at our local community college or seek out a stain glass studio where I had to pay to learn... Here, folks get it free and right from their home... I can definitely tell you are INTO STAIN GLASS!!! Nice to see … would you recommend what other videos you've made I should view and is there an order? Also, do you sell your art, if so how? Thanks Makenzie...!

Hi :) I am new to this and in the process of getting all the gear in order to start making my own things .... I came searching for guidance in how much oil to put in the pistol cutter as I put enough in to fill about a 1/3rd and lo and behold oil was leaking everywhere so here I am and wish I had found you before that happened but hey happy little accidents lead onto greater things :) I also have 2 pairs of the growzer (nipper) pliers wide and narrow and do not feel too happy with them so will try the running pliers only and see how I get on with them and if ok then will stick with them for sure. :) I have now subscribed and look forward to learning more from you as I now binge your videos LOL .. I LOVE this!!!! I’m a moon lover myself but glass moons are the devil! 😂 I have ruined so much glass trying to cut moons and even when I get it, it’s hit and miss. I’m right next to our a/c when I’m cutting so that must be a factor too. Thank you so much! You are a wonderful teacher! 💜

oh my gosh absolutely!!! Work away from that AC!!! It can cause every break to just snap jagged edges off course and shit! Use them running pliers, listen, and you'll never break a moon again! Thank you and thank you for watching!!! So glad its helpful!!

Omg thank you so much for the tip about opening the running pliers. When I took the class they never mentioned it!! Completely changed the way my glass breaks!!!

@@MakenzieHallie I'm an olde self-taught stained glass girl too & have picked the art back up after 10 yrs of "workin for the man" hiatus. You are my refresher instructor that I'll leave on loop as I'm running about and you've given me an enthusiastic and heartfelt lift. Thank you for that.. it's excruciatingly painful to watch some of the videos posted by the derrr's of life 🤣 keep going, you're only going to excel 🖤☠☮

Lmao I KNOW RIGHT!!! It's like flash backs to science lectures watching some of these dudes work glass 😂😂 BUT we respect and look up to them none the less!! 😉. I'm so glad my channel is that change of pace, the whole reason I did it! I could hear another monotone sentence about solder 🤣🤣 🖤🖤 thank you and will do!! Will have glass shopping up tonight!

I've been doing stained glass for over 10 years, using the same Toyo Pistol grip cutter, and never had it leak. I only fill it with a small amount of oil, since a little goes a long way. Also, your using the nippers the wrong way, flat side should be on the top to gently pull the glass apart. The curved edge on top should only be used to remove small pieces of glass left after the cut. Love the detail you give in the videos, very informative and worth watching.

Hi Mackenzie, thanks for your amazing videos. I love watching them, full of good advice. Just started with stained glass and not too good with cutting!? Got a pair of running pliers but I can’t get them to work? Got arthritis in my hand, so maybe I’m not pressing hard enough? Started with the pencil cutter but I have changed now to the pistol, much better. Thanks again Marianne.
@MakenzieHallie3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marianne, alot of the time the advice I give is making sure your starting and ending your score to each edge of the glass. If your doing that, those running pliers should snap it with ease! Just keep practicing!

Hi Makenzie, thank you so much. I learnt more watching your video than in two years if classes. How often should I be changing wheel in glass cutter, I’ve never done it. Your scoring is much more pronounced than when I score. Cheers Donna
@MakenzieHallie3 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna! I'm so glad you feel like your learning alot, I hope to do classes somehow online soon. I'm trying to figure that out. But, I change mine whenever I can feel and hear the glass score and break differently. Its hard to explain to know when, vs, just knowing with practice. I have about 5 spare glass cutters/tips ready to go so when you have that bad span of shit just breaking horribly, it's no biggie to toss the cutter and start with a new one. You want the score to be making that crisp, sharp scoring sound and to be able to snap your glass with ease. If your glass cutter and oil is old, it's going to make that alot harder.

You are so helpful. I love the why you explain this to us newbies in ways we can understand. I would like to make a video suggestion. What temperature show our solder iron be at. Does it need to be changed at all or is it the same all the time. Keep up with the video you are a true blessing. Thank you
@MakenzieHallie4 жыл бұрын
Hey Lorena! Thank you so much! I'm so glad its helpful!! And that totally depends!! What kind of solder are you using? I assume a lead based? 50/50? 60/40? The melting point will always be in relation to solder mixture. My next glass video will be all about soldering!!! 🖤🖤🖤 Thank you for watching!!!

I am really enjoying your videos...very helpful. On a couple of the pieces you cut there was a little bump of glass outside the scored line. Normally I would use the nippers to gnaw away those little bumps. How do you do it? Thanks so much

Makenzie can you do a video on doing repairs and soldering chain as a decorative edge to a stained glass piece?
@StinkyDustyBird4 жыл бұрын
This is great, I’ve always always wanted to do stained glass but I can never cut ❤️ Oh, and you’re so right about the pistol cutter. I’m a glass bead maker and after almost 20 years of doing so, my hands are showing arthritis. I hold from 6mm to about 20 gauge wire for hours a day, spinning the glass mandrels, it’s getting painful.
@StinkyDustyBird4 жыл бұрын
Haha yes see? I never used oil and I used those idiot nippers. I can’t wait to try! Ordering from your links.

Oh gosh yea, I'm so afraid of what my hands will be by the time I'm 50 or something. My wrist already causes me issues. I'm sorry your dealing with pain! And absolutely try it!! lol and yes, screw the nippers!!! Thank you for watching!! I'll have to see if I can set up affiliate links with Amazon soon since I'm always linking there stuff!! lol!!

Hi Makenzie, I've just found you for the first time and am thrilled. Your lesson was explained very well and of course I love the demonstration. I have only one question for you so far though. What is the surface of your work area made of? I'm looking forward to going back to view some of your older vids and of course whatever you come up with in the future. Thank you for all the information!

Hello! Thank you so much! Are you referring to the black mat i solder on?
@skyemiques96083 жыл бұрын
@@MakenzieHallie Hi there! Yes, the black mat and the surface of the desk that you cut the glass on. Is it wood?
@MakenzieHallie3 жыл бұрын
So the black mat is just a soldering mat (heat resistant), under that I have a piece of wood. The island is a bamboo work bench painted black!
