For the wood one: When you dent the wood, the mass you displace from the dent doesnt leave the block of wood, it just gets compressed. Since wood is porous and heat expands, the moisture fills all the pores and the heat causes them to rexpand, pushing the mass back into shape.

@yikes14652 жыл бұрын
the soap thing is more for metal when you are cutting it to make jewelry, you rub the jewelers saw along soap (or more commonly beeswax) then cut into the metal. Makes it much smoother and helps make cleaner cuts. Not ideal for wood, just metal.
@wolfchan43893 ай бұрын

I'm in training to be a cabinetmaker and I use the steam hack with any dents, though I do it differently. I put a wet paper towel on top of the wood and then run an iron (on low) over it until it's raised enough and then sand it smooth. I think it works because you're putting moisture into the wood, which makes it expand. Also with the soap hack, I've used that and it's really nice for soft metals like brass which are really easy to strip. I used paraffin wax though, which may have some slightly different results

If you need to make a mark in the same place so you can joint wood together place a nail with the head of it where you want to drill and then sandwich it with the other half of wood, then hit the top part of the wood with a mallet and it'll make a mark to drill a hole in both sides! Love the videos guys keep it up!

10:31 - In this case, I think it's less the heat and more moisture, which causes the wood to swell up just a bit. I read a similar life-hack that said to just put a couple drops of water on the affected wood, and then when it's soaked up, sand it back to flush.

After renovating a one-room building with a grumpy old retired construction manager (he was 87 at the time), I learned to stick longer screws into a jar of vaseline (instead of a dry soap bar). It really did help! And if it was worth it after his decades of experience, it's good enough for me! (I was the dumb young labor for the whole thing).

I just got my Raycons for Christmas and to be honest, way better than AirPods. They stay in your ear better, less expensive, and super comfortable! I’m wearing them while watching this video! (The audio quality is so much better than I thought it’d be)

PSA: do not use the magnet hack or other magnetic screwdrivers and similar when you are working with circuit boards, laptop, other computer-y stuff. Data storage works by assigning polarity to a thing and magnets disturb that. This means that you can delete the data on a drive, be it solid state or 'conventional', by placing a magnet on it. Circuit boards can be very delicate also, and you can easily ruin the things by being clumsy with a magnet, also static electricity is not your friend when working with such things... which is really sucky, because having a magnet with those tiny screws would be so great ... This does not have to be a problem, but it can be and since tech can be stupid expensive, it would be really sad to ruin a thing because of that.
@stokhosursus4 жыл бұрын
Well, yes and no... A lot of drives are magnetically shielded up to a point; otherwise, you’d wipe your hard drive just by carrying your laptop in and out of some buildings with magnetic security gates. Since the screws are generally very tiny, it wouldn’t require a strong magnetic field to hold onto the screw. In fact, there are some computer repair kits that come with magnetized screwdrivers and such. Is it safer to avoid magnets completely around computers? Sure! However, if you know what you’re doing and are careful, you’ll be fine. 🙂

Pros trying to strip screws be like "???" My noob ass, having been forced to use only three (3) different screwdrivers for all sorts of DIY's lately: "My time to shine!!!" No but really, how to strip a screw: you try to screw it in tightly/out from a tight spot using _the wrong size/type_ of manual screwdriver. A flathead in a phillips works best. Put your whole bodyweight into that sucker and _twist_ your worst. Horrendous stripping guaranteed! xD

With the salt and glue one you can use a little bit of sand instead or put a bit of a nail in it and clip it off to hold both parts of the wood together

You should try making the most functional desk ever. Incorporate floating shelves/storage held by the desk, create drawers and compact storage areas on the side and under the desk. And maybe incorporate something that slides out of the way to reveal a quark board or chalk board? Make sure to include resin to! If you can incorporate a lightning and cable organization system then that’s brownie points!

An alternative to the last one with the line, is to cut the scrap in half, with a good 90-degree crosscut, then hold the two pieces together side-by-side, but with their ends slightly offset from each other. This allows you to easily nestle your drillbit into the vertical inside corner between the end grain of one piece and the side grain of the other. Easier to use than sighting a line, because the bit can actually touch the two vertical surfaces.

For the glue up, you can put a small nail or two on one and then snip the head off. It's worked for me before. Leave the nail with a millimeter or two left. Hope you try it!

I’ve not used salt but I have used sand and it worked great! You only need a very small sprinkling to do the trick and the plus side with sand is you can see it! Just takes a dozen grains to give enough grip to not slide around anymore.

Again, as a cabinetmaker for over 30 years, I've often used steam in many projects. To remove dents in wood I use a wet rag and an old iron. Virtually, every woodshop has an iron in it. The steamer should work fine too. Another trick I use, if I have time, is to drape a wet cloth, (white , clean cotton is best), and go for coffee. It can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour without the heat.
