Not breaking new ground, but a couple of pices that are 8x8, 10x10 or 12x12 with a 12 inch black pipe on a flange with free weights, makes an excellent centralized "clamp" Great lòking project.

Interesting process for this build. I'm surprised you didn't make any jokes about Red Oak being "practice wood." Do you think you could've used something like 1/4" or 3/8" plywood and kerfed it to allow it to bend around the oval shape without having to have struggled so much with thin veneers?

Here's what I'm wondering....Suppose you created these and wrapped them around a form and glued them. Might they stay firmly in that position? Here's where I'm going with this...I was wondering if a might create, say, a 5" high round table skirt, maybe with a 50" diameter, composed of a couple of 100, 5" pieces of this stuff, wrap it around a form and glue it. If that seems tedious, I'd argue, no more so that this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZ-kia13nLB6m5osi=ohIvidLQHjqQXgXJ&t=81

It makes me nervous to glue this thing together and never be able to access the Tambour ribs. To address this, I would drill a hole (big enough for the end caps to pass through WITHOUT their handles) in the bottom that goes through the slider slot. This hole would be located where one of the feet are attached. To the top of the foot that will cover the hole, I would attach a bung/plug that would replace all the material removed by the making the hole. The result is that by removing the foot, you have access to remove all of the moving parts. This would allow you to make future adjustments/repairs.

There is a school of thought that considers computer aided tools to be an abomination to woodworkers. I say "Bah!" Use whatcha got. I could...with considerably more fiddling...make the tambour slats. Have, in fact, done so without 'specific to the project' bits. Took three days to make a tambour for a smaller rolltop secretary. I have cut ovals using a funky jig technique with a string and finish nails, then cleaned up on disc sander. One of the purest styles of furniture ( in my opinion) is Shaker. Clean lines, simple forms, pure function. The Shakers got this bum rap where folk bunch them with the Amish. Nothing could be further from the truth. They used whatever tech was available to manufacture their furniture...hand tools, power tools, what have you. If it works, saves time, speeds the process...use it. From my understanding, the last of the REAL Shakers worked as computer programmers up into their eighties. There are also haters out there that are going to go off on you for all the cool stuff you have. The CNC router, the Shark router table, the comfortable and cozy workspace. Let 'em. If they envy you, let them work to acquire the cool stuff. If they just hate to hate, pity them. In the end, what it boils down to is the process of creation, and you have built a space that lets your creativity flow. Good on you, mate! That lil' table...cabinet...whatchamacallit...is cool as anything I've seen in years. You rock!

OK I've worked out how to achieve this result without selling your grandmother for $200 and change for the router bit set. Buy a Roman Ogee bit for the male profile one pass either side, cut slot with table saw then run ball end bit finish that side of the slat with a bull nose bit, job done and change out of $100. I'm in the UK and I have all but the Ball bit but CMT do a 1/4in one for £25.

Loved this project. I just have one bit of advice! Lose the negative mantra of "Don't Forget" and instead focus on the positive mantra of "Remember To"! This was pushed into my mind by my wonderful Grandmother, who was one of the most positive people I ever had the pleasure of knowing. Even in the senior's residence where she lived, I'm sure she went to every floor in the tower and changed the sign by the elevator from "Don't forget to lock your door" to "Remember to lock your door"! Such a message was never changed by the staff of the residence. Looking forward to see how your budget shop comes along.

They want $214 for the bit set? Me thinks that's a touch on the pricey side, but a fun project and an interesting alternative to a regular tambour door. I think unless your choice of timber was very close grained hardwood it wouldn't be very robust.

Because you cut your door slats to 9", the enclosure will be less than 9" tall on the inside because of the slots that the door will slide in... Not sure how deep you made the tracks for the doors, but it looks to be almost 1/2" inch deep? If so that makes the inside of the cabinet really close to 8", probably slightly higher than 8" (to give movement allowance for the doors).

So a few tips. First, take a little notch out of the top and bottom of the termination piece on the meeting middle edge. Then glue small pieces into the tracks slightly smaller than the combined notches right in the middle of the opening. That will prevent sliding closed too far and defines a true center where they meet. Second. Lightly chamfer or round all edges of the door pieces individually. Just touch it with a sander. That will promote sliding like a sled instead of digging in to the channel, especially in the corners of the channel. While it may slide well at first, over time a groove might get dug into the channel from a few sharper pieces of door. Also, chamfering where it meets the inside corner of the channel leaves a space for dust to go over time. Third. If you designed it in 2 pieces for each top and bottom it would be easier for repair or cleaning. If you don't want to take the whole cabinet apart, you could have made the center/inside section removable with a few screws on the inside of the cabinet. Since the opening is almost the full width of the cabinet, you should be able to get pieces like that in and out. Maybe a couple not glued locator dowels to make sure it's positioned right when reinstalling.

Beautiful piece. For the doors, you could leave a small piece of wood inside the door track - part of the cnc cut - that would be a stop for the middle of the track in the front. So positive stop for the doors on close. Notch the end pieces on the doors so the doors fit over the stop in top and bottom tracks and ..... profit?
