@beautywisz6 жыл бұрын
As someone who's worked for these companies you can not blame all the workers and their sanitization process. Testers are a risk ALWAYS. You can't control people touching everything all the time. You can't safely sanitize something that's touched by so many people. When you go to a professional makeup artist they maintain their kits and prevent people from touching their kits. It's why I always suggest hiring a professional for events as opposed to getting your makeup done at a counter. This is why.

@Lundy.Fastnet.Irish_Sea6 жыл бұрын
Mary Anderson samples are generally new.
@beautywisz6 жыл бұрын
Mary Anderson if you get a sample from Sephora it's made from a tester on the floor. It's only new if it's a sachet or deluxe sample in the brand's packaging. If it's scooped into a little clear container where the artist writes down what it is for you, that's from a tester on the floor. Foundations in pumps and brow pomades are usually fine to sample because people aren't sticking their hands in the actual product. Powder products, lip products and eye pencils and mascaras are your biggest vulnerability when it comes to bacteria.

Everyone can use a disposable lip applicator and only dip it in once. If you need another layer or dip. Dispose the one you used, grab a new disposable lip applicator. But not everyone is going to do that process.
@leaniasl60106 жыл бұрын
Do you not get the concept here? Swatching is essentially putting a clean product against your dirty skin (seriously, don't get offended; you have things landing on you from the air all the time. No such thing as "100% clean"), and if you don't like it, you close it, now putting whatever was on your skin into the whole bottle, contaminating it. Let's just use a simple example here that takes away the initial response to the term "dirty." Say you just finished a delicious chocolate brownie with walnuts.You're mobile, walking through the store as you eat, and want to try on some make up. So you just swatch on the back of your hand, don't like the color, so you put it back. Now there is a high possibility of an allergen inside the product. Egg, milk, tree nut....if someone who is allergic does a swatch, now there's a high chance of allergic reaction, depending on their sensitivity. So no, don't "just swatch it." Either use a disposable applicator to sample, or just buy a sealed one and if you don't like it, either return it, or just toss it out.

I've pretty much only ever shopped drugstore for makeup, so the first time I even got to try testers in store was a year ago. All the built-in applicators had been ripped off, and there were disposable ones placed here and there in the store. Unfortunately, my moronic, unobservant self didn't notice the disposable applicators until after I'd use the broken nibs to swatch on my hands. I feel so guilty, even a year later, because I introduced extra bacteria (although I already new there was almost definitely a lot in the testers already) into products when I didn't have to.

This moment in the video is exactly why I came to the comment section. You don’t lick the table at a fast food place and then act like you should’ve been informed that they aren’t cleaned thoroughly after every customer! And she doesn’t realize that she is the one contributing to the problem by putting public samples on her own face.
@parichawlaa4 жыл бұрын
Really! There are so many people trying on testers. It is impossible to clean each and every one of them after use by a costumer for the store workers as well. We as shoppers need to use our common sense and use the testers on the hands and wash them later on.
@mahaimtiaz9474 жыл бұрын
No actually like sephora has an actual makeup artist show you brow techniques and stuff using testers so yeah I do fault the companies
@xrosalinax43656 жыл бұрын
Was this suppose to be shocking? Like honestly, do people expect a couple of workers to clean after their every touch? Because there are about 1000 people that go to those stores per day. If people have common sense they should know to only swatch it on their hand or something. Thats the point of testers. Its not some full makeover. So videos like these are just annoying. Because bacteria is everywhere. What do you expect them to do about it?
@ericaroundtheworld6 жыл бұрын

I'm wondering how many people can judge about this as we're all learning about it now. For example, if you never worked in a restaurant, and the next day were told to wipe off the tables after each use, and KEEP THEM SPOTLESS!! You get slammed with customers, but did your best to keep up day after day with no other instruction, but no one ever told you to wipe down the chairs.......that information was supposed to come from the top. Now that we know about this, the sensible thing to do is provide tester swabs, which I have seen. Make those women who do full facials BUY those products if they don't use common sense. Eww.

Back in the day there were single testers so these may come back. What they really need to revisit is the use of antimicrobials. While I agree that it should be common sense not to put a tester on the face, I see people do it every. damn. day. I work at a drugstore, and we do have some testers out. People of all ages, like college kids through little old ladies come in - smear everything on their face - and leave. If there's no tester, they just open the product and do what they like, and I have to hope I can catch the products that have been opened to throw them away before someone else buys them. We can't sell them anymore! It's disgusting, but its also clearly not something that 'everyone' knows about, or they wouldn't do it.

I have mixed feelings about this video. It pissed me off but also made me more aware of the kind of things that are found in testers. I work at Sephora . I was a color consultant for quite a while, before moving to a different section. The reason this video pissed me off is because the people they're interviewing are absolutely ignorant. "We trust them to be sanitary" are you serious? It is extremely difficult working at a beauty store ESPECIALLY when it's VERY busy all 7 days of the week. Yes we do get trained on how to clean testers, yes most of us clean testers on the daily (I'd like to think so), but it is impossible to clean it every minute of every day because of how many people will touch that product. Before mini makeovers and custom makeovers, for sure we will clean the products very well. I am a germaphobe, so I understand and appreciate the time taken to get people to be aware of this but honestly do NOT blame the workers or the company, at least the ones that actually try to keep things in good shape. My advice is; SWATCH ON YOUR HANDS. OR ANYWHERE ELSE OTHER THAN YOUR FACE. If you buy it and don't like it? Return or exchange. Perks of Sephora. simple. Thank you. my rant is over lol
@abigailedwards98666 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you! That girl who worked at shoppers was not trained properly btw! I worked at shoppers and we cleaned as much as we could(INCLUDING TESTERS) and ESPECIALLY before makeovers but we can not keep up with the amount of people in stores and brands RARELY send us testers so we have to keep old testers out or else people will start opening up the saleable product and testing from that which is so disgusting that people think that is okay not only to open but once they open it they put it back on the shelf in the package like nothing happened ruining that product for someone else to unknowingly buy. Basically always swatch on the hand and dont be a rude customer when there is no tester to begin with. It is probably because we threw it out because it was gross. That girl in the video completely pissed me off rant over.

I think its not the workers its more the management of the company that doesn't hire enough workers to clean every section. If you have a company that big than you should have an individual assigned to every section and put up signs to warn consumers not too swatch make up on their face. A consumer should have zero risk of infection when trying or buying a product there are no exceptions even in the cosmetics industry.
@mollywalsh36106 жыл бұрын
I worked at Sephora in skincare, and we cleaned everything all the time. We also cut lipsticks and other lip products that some in a tube regularly. But customers would still use products, especially lip products, straight out of the containers. If we saw someone doing that, our policy was to throw out the tester. There’s no way to clean a mascara or lipgloss once someone has used the applicator and put it back in the tube. Shoppers should always test on their hands, never on their faces!

Sephora is the worst. if you book a makeup appointment they use the testers on your face. they don't even have clean products for ppl paying to get their makeup done. Worse their employees aren't trained makeup artists and there is so much incompetence. Many of them do not clean their brushes. You're better off going to a department store or to MAC where the employees are all professional makeup artists. MAC actually has clean testers you can ask for and this clip showed they have less contamination in their samples.

I don't know who thought testers were clean. Ever! As an esthetician and former Sears cosmetics employee we did do things such as use a special tool to cut off a few millimeters of lipstick spray it with alcohol and pat it dry with a clean tissue or makeup sponge. Scraping shadows and blushes and then spraying them was another practice. But not all.of us did it. I just know I never tested any makeup on my face at any store. Ew!

@Victoria-yf6rn6 жыл бұрын
I thought everyone knew that makeup testers aren’t sanitary... it’s common sense. I would never test makeup testers on my face, only swatch it on my hand and then clean it off after.
@beautywisz6 жыл бұрын
Tori you'd think so but people put makeup testers on without thought of the bacteria.
@Tammy_Tammy1236 жыл бұрын
When people come in to get their makeup done and pay 80 dollars, or more, the employees almost ALWAYS use the DIRTY testers because they're advised not to use the clean ones if the client doesn't notice. And who would pay to get their makeup done at sephora? People who are just learning to put on make up and need someone to do it for an event, and theyre the most vulnerable.
@beautywisz6 жыл бұрын
The Fuculator no retailer charges $80 unless they are buying more product. In every retailer the price is about $60 before taxes and it's towards product. Going to an actual makeup artist/having them come to you would prevent the use of mass testers. Not every situation, store, or artists operates the same and it's up to the due diligence of the client to see whether the artist they go to in retail is being sanitary enough to their standards. Makeover "testers" are put aside in stores like MAC and Sephora, however, they are being using by several artists who may vary in their hygiene practices.

I worked at ULTA for five years and the amount of people who just let their CHILDREN put tester makeup on their FACE was disturbing. People let their children put on tester lipsticks without having them sanitized first and think it's adorable; all I was thinking was I hope they don't contract oral herpes. It's common sense...

@Losshe6 жыл бұрын
It's worse with makeup because clothes are dry but a lot of makeups are in liquid or cream form. When it's wet it makes an idea environment for bacteria to grow and multiply. And some of the testers don't get replaced for months even years

Junaina Chowdhury nah, i used to work in clothes. We would just check to make sure its not damaged nor stained, and that it is free of oder before hanging/folding the best we can before putting it to the floor. Mind you I'd caught some people trying to do product swaps with tops from 1-2 years ago that were just rereleased (the tags don't lie). My coworkers wouldn't even look for deodorant marks, let alone oder. I'd send anything I found to claims (which hurt us but less than marking down) while my coworkers would put something in the same condition back to the floor. Welcome to retail. The magic washing machine for tried on clothes is a lie.
