Please remember: You CANNOT change a persons diagnosis by loving them. He was a diagnosed psychopath, he wasn't able to feel remorse or guilt and couldn't just snap his fingers to feel those feelings. As nice as Pater has been, Patricks mind wasn't able to compensate that.
@Madiannereid Жыл бұрын
You are right! But also plenty of psychopaths live relatively normal, successful lives. It’s not automatically a condemnation to live a violent, murderous life.
@DemonSoul89420 Жыл бұрын
@@Madiannereid this. People with personality disorders aren't AUTOMATICALLY killers. It's an annoying assumption to make. Also "psychopath" is no longer a term, generally now "psychopathy" is now labeled under AsPD (Antisocial personality disorder) Not all stuffers of AsPD ever hurt anyone. You may even of met some and had no idea
@Madiannereid Жыл бұрын
@@DemonSoul89420 Antisocial Personality disorder is wider. Psychopathy is a term still widely used by professionals and I think in the context of this video it applies. It was a new development in the latest version of the DSM-V include it under that umbrella, and personally I think it was the wrong choice. Most clinicians still regard psychopathy as a more severe subtype of ASPD. Anyway, I think we agree overall.
@iameileen___6689 Жыл бұрын
I agree. But in this case it was clear. And to think you can just love someone and that makes him change is plain naive.
@lucycarlisle9120 Жыл бұрын
Washing one's hands of any & all person(s) diagnosed with a disorder is irresponsible & discriminatory. When someone is chronically violent & prone to angry outburts over nothing & getting picked up on crimes habitually... nah. You can love someone while still letting them face their consequences. Not bailing someone out doesn't negate all tender feelings you have for them; it actually reinforces the feelings. You believe they can do & be better.

both my grandfathers were in WW2 & had PTSD to the max. of course back then it wasn’t diagnosed for 50-60 years. they saw some really horrible things (i won’t traumatize everyone) but i can say anyone would be messed up by what they saw & went through. one drank heavily, the other was full of anxiety & was frazzled almost always. so sad 😞

My grandfather was caught by the Nazis and put into a concentration camp... We were allowed to ask him about anything in the War except that.... He would literally get up and leave... The horrors there was something he didn't want to burden us with
@Morncreek Жыл бұрын
My grandfathers also served in the military during World War II. One became a functioning alcoholic with his own small construction business, the other also managed his own construction business. Both, however, never spoke of their experiences. My mother told me that teachers would tell her class to ask their parents about WWII (instead of the teachers teaching it...) and she was frustrated by the lack of sensitivity. I have experienced the generational damage of war. Patrick/David certainly made his choices as an adult, but his father, mother, and society failed him, too. Sorry for the text dump; this case struck a nerve all around.

Survivor's guilt can occur even in those who aren't the sole survivor, but that you survived when another person should have as well or even in your place, the feeling of being unworthy of living instead of the other can also be present. This can happen to anyone who experiences someone near them who dies traumatically (car accident; natural disaster; act of terrorism; etc.), but it is also common in first responders and military service members. It's heartbreaking.
