It definitely is one of those things that sounds awesome and interesting in concept, but probably becomes an annoying limiting factor in practice for most players who just want to go out and hunt monster X without wanting to wait around for seasons to change. If it ever came back, with modern gamers, i'm sure that there would be a demand to have an option to fast-forward time to reach the season that you want to do stuff in, which kinda defeats the purpose of having seasons rather than just have quests with unique modifiers.
@carstan62 Жыл бұрын
It's a cool concept for sure. I definitely agree that if it was brought back in its existing state it would be awful for trying to grind though. I do think there are ways to fix it though. For example, maybe when you accept a quest you'll be able to set it to any day/season combination that you've already cleared the quest on. This would make it so that you'd still have to deal with the time mechanics at least for the first time. You should definitely be able to hunt any monster during any season, but maybe the area you hunt it in would change.

I think Outbreaks are a spiritual successor to the Season mechanic. Each map has its own and it is random, but it changes what small monsters appear, and what items you get more of when gathering. In Rise it also changes mid quest, you only get I believe 10 minutes of an outbreak before it changes to another. In World it was also the only way to get certain rare Account Items and subsequently the only way to unlock certain food buffs.
@Botta928 Жыл бұрын
I am currently playing mhtri, and I love old gen mechanics! In world/rise I feel like something like the moga forest is missing, where you get to kill monsters to later report to the chief son, and he would give you special materials which can be traded with the japanese dude for other special materials, I loved that! They could have done that with the forest in world, and maybe trade materials from the old world. I also miss cha-cha, I love kittens but cha-cha is just so iconic
@Aevum13th Жыл бұрын
Sounds somewhat similar to something in MH4U. You exchange monster materials for materials from monsters that don't appear in the game, and you can use them to make new armours or weapons. As an example, I remember giving over Teostra monsters parts in exchange for Lunastra parts (monster didn't appear in that game), and used them to make new weapons and armour.

That mechanic is annoying AF. Not only is the only way to obtain points but the grind that comes with it is not fun in any way since you depend on RNG to have the monsters you want to spawn. I wouldn't mind a similar mechanic as an ALTERNATIVE to get other types of materials and stuff, but this being the only way to get trade items and points is one of the most annoying aspects of 3U, no wonder it hasn't returned. I honestly get how it could be interesting for some people, but I honestly don't like any mechanic that forces me to do something I don't want, that's the issue I take with Moga Forest. If I could obtain moga points like research points in other MH games, just by playing and doing regular quests, and resources in another more passive way and have moga woods as an alternative method to obtain/farm them more consistently I'd be up for it, but I absolutely hate stopping what I'm currently doing in the game in order to farm resources to complete requests. Even the gathering spots that don't have any label when you walk past was something I enjoyed since you can boast to friends where you can get certain items. The information you slowly get accustomed to was the highlight for me when I first picked this title way back to MHFU. It was tedious and grindy but, the journey to mastering each big monster through repetitive hunt or reading through hunter notes was my source of dopamine for MH. I've heard about the season mechanics of MH Dos but never looked up more about it before. Ngl, if they brought this back to future MH games, I think even just that feature might be enough to change things up and helps on breaking the cycle a little bit from being too monotonous at times. Maybe still we can still be able to go to certain areas even if the season/climate/weather is against us, like going to the volcanic areas in summer or tundra areas in winter, but with a significant drawbacks, such as maybe needing to drink two Hot/Cold drinks instead of just one. Then if, for example, in winter, in addition to a harsher weather in the tundra area, the forest area would be affected too in a sense that it becomes a secondary "normal" snowy area, which in turn have monsters from the tundra area go there. Of course it won't be just that, rewards could be amped up at those times to rewards hunters for enduring those situations. Besides that, depending on the season, maybe some monsters would be a lot more hostile and aggressive, and/or be enraged longer, etc., which would also amp up the difficulty in stable weather and seasons. Although it's probably a lot of work as to why they removed the feature, but if that is one feature that they need to bring back.

Funny enought monster from some blocked zones in a season actually move to other zones. Example Daimyo is in the dessert but in warm season you can find them in the Jungle because is hot enought for them to survive; Khezhu you can fight them in the Snowy mountains but in cold season you find them in the swap because is cold enought for they to survive. Monster also change actitude in season velociprey will attack you in a Rathian hunt but will help you againts her if you fight her in breeding season they will not agro on you and constally jump onto the Rathian until she leaves the zone. The reason is because Rathians hunts velociprey in breeding season so they know you are attacking a predator of they and help

There could be balance between old and new philosophy, and I think it would be really interesting. But we'll likely never see it. My dream for wilds is having the open world with hardcore mechanics like Dos, but just make it less grindy to compensate. Make it so that if you hunt 2 or 3 of a particular monster, you will likely have enough materials for its armor or whatever weapon you want. As it is, you can fight Rathalos a dozen times hoping for one plate for armor, only to find the upgraded weapon also needs a plate. It's a bit ridiculous. I think it would be super compelling to, as a hunter, migrate from biome to biome in the open world as the seasons change. You need raw meat? Find the Aptonoth's migration paths and stalk them. Then as you're following them, a wyvern whose weapon you want ambushes them to prey on them and you get an organic opportunity to achieve your goals. You want to hunt a cold weather monster, but it is winter? Better have cold insulating armor along with hot drinks. I think this is all a step too far for 95% of the current player base though.

For anyone that wishes to know, the mh freedom series is the same as the mh series on the ps2. Monster hunter freedom is the first monster hunter, and freedom unite is the second. The main differences are that they were modified for psp and their difficulty was toned down along with some additions. Basically the "lineage" goes mh1, mhg, mh2, mhf, mhfu. But mhf and mhfu are much closer to mhg in gameplay than mh2, so I would consider mhf and fu to be spiritual successors to mhg where mh2 is the spiritual successor to mh1. The gameplay style of dos is very unique and honestly a bit foreign to the rest of the franchise.
@zan6102 Жыл бұрын
@@deaj8450 I can't say I agree with you fully, as the idea of a spiritual successor is up to one's beliefs, and so is the thing that would be considered the successor. @SolRynn Жыл бұрын
My ideal implementation of the Seasonal mechanic would be restricting those seasons to the hunts themselves and not the hub world. This would let players take on the quest at any time, but they'd still have to plan out for the season as the monsters would, like before, be affected by things like temperature, weather, time, etc. I'd have the seasons be broken down into the same three as before (Warm, Cold, & Breeding) with the addition of a fourth "Rainy Season" The big deal with the Seasons this time however would be how they would affect maps as well. This time around, Hunters could do things like go to the snow map during the cold season, but they had better prepare accordingly as the cold will be much more intense than what is the norm. Maps would be slightly changed as well layout wise depending on the season. For example, let's say that on our forest map, there are cliffs that the Hunter just wouldn't be able to reach normally. However, during the Rainy Season, plants have grown out and now the hunter would have vines and whatnot that appear to change how the hunter traverses the map which could allow them to reach those cliffs now. Similarly, perhaps caves that are normally accessible are closed off due to piles of snow and ice blocking the way during the cold season. This could go on to also affect temperature. Perhaps on the Volcanic map during the cold season, the Volcano is dormant and it isn't hot anymore until you get very deep into the caverns where there's more lava to heat up the place. The opposite could be true as well for a snowy mountain map where during the warm season, the snow and ice mostly melts away and rather than a snow map, we now have a more rocky mountainous map. And all of these changes could in turn affect how monsters might behave, what ones show up in areas for expeditions, and even things like endemic life to be found, items to be gathered, and natural traps such as like in the Ancient Forest in World having the water dam or the vines falling to trap monsters being affected by the changing seasons. Perhaps during the rainy season in the desert, The temperature is cooled during the day and there is an abundance of quicksand affecting both the hunter and monsters on the map. I feel like this paired with day and night could give hunters plenty of variety in how a hunt might go down and they'd have to plan accordingly.

I think a mechanic like this would benefit a more roleplaying version of the game, so if this was added to some extent ,I think it should be in a monster hunter with a real focus on the story, the world building, the main and side characters. It would also add urgency to quests and item collection. Needless to say a rework of item drop rates and rarity would be needed as well as a bunch of changes. A more open world kind of game seems like a better fit for this as well. Think of it like a hunter always on an expedition on the search for something and stopping by towns throughout the journey, seasons would change throughout the journey and backtracking or exploring things that were unavailable before would be amazing. Needless to say I see a ton of potential for this but its likely never gonna happen :(

If they could revamp this mechanic; maybe add a "hunting season" opposite breading season to serve as the autumn/fall equivalent where bonepiles have more bones, small prey are way less abundant, and predators are more active; maybe integrate the seasons with the weather mechanic and upsurge mechanic as well: i feel like it could really breath a lot more life into the game world, and if they maybe try bringing back underwater but with the better modern camera and some massive improvements on the underwater mobility and agility I feel like bringing back the older abandoned mechanics in improved ways like this would be a fantastic way of improving some future MH game Like imagine the imteractive environments and endemic life of MHW, maybe with the funtional endemic life of MHR tossed in, using and improving upon those 2 older mechanics, mounting instead of wyvern riding, something to grant us wire bug levels of mobility but without the broken mechanics to replace wire bugs themselves, with the quest system that MHR brought back after MHW dropped it, maybe bringing in the travelling between towns we saw in (was it 4 or Generations?) Just imagine Underwater (but actually good) in Warm Season with MHW level of graphics, matbe bearing witness to an underwater turf war

They could make it work with irl seasons. Like in winter the snowy mountains get even moreso affecting movement, areas nearby also gain snow and ice monsters can start appearing in those areas. Summer the snow retreats. The desert could have rainy seasons in place of autumn/winter/spring and have the area grow more cacti, making monoblos migrate in and out of diablos territory (seasonal monster appearances). Heck could even work some breeding season logic in, mid summer black diablos appear to lay eggs in the warmth, which hatch as the rainy season starts as all the cacti appear then. Maybe gigginox invades khezu territory near the end of winter to feed off them before the khezu migrate to colder regions in spring. It would have to be a huge world to really take advantage of this but with a mechanic like this a big open world monster hunter could live for years

i recon they COULD bring this back since Rise removes the hot/cold drinks, perhaps you could still visit the desert & tundra on those seasons but you will NEED the hot/cold drink to not die, perhaps fire & ice element could work a little different on the seasons too

@D.B.M. Жыл бұрын
They could return this feature, but not with the limitation of maps or monsters disappearing. -Mating season could make the monsters much more aggressive and dealing more damage; -Cold and Warm season could change the areas a little bit and make hunters use special consumables to walk without receiving damage, like the Hot/Cold drinks, but stronger.

I want them to bring back the whole mechanic of damaging monster parts weakens or disables certain moves/mechanics. Don’t like getting poisoned by Rathalos? Break his talons, and his talon attacks wouldn’t poison you.
@thenerdbeast7375 Жыл бұрын
Breeding Season should be the opposite, with monsters being more common and more aggressive because the need to breed has made them more ornery and territorial. Also because of the traveling some animals do to look for mates and establish territories, it should make some rare monsters appear more often.
@paulandreig.sahagun3411 ай бұрын
Imagine a hunt, when we would need to stop 2 or more Mitsuzune male during a Breeding season, because they're in heat and are the aggressive beings around that time in Wilds, just maybe in the future too.

Monster Hunter Frontier also has this season mechanic, but it's not so relevant unless you're planning to gather stuff on the map

I never played Dos, but I can see why they cut this mechanic. Bluntly: the amount of prep you'd need to do before hunting (food, the weather, your gear etc.) are all realistic things you need to do before ANY hunt, be it here in the real world for a deer or in MH for a Kulu-Ya-Ku. My hunch is that quite a few people didn't understand or didn't want all that prep, they just wanted to do the monster murder, so Capcom trimmed it out. Which is a shame, because I also think it's a neat concept.

they did bring it back in World with that golden breast monster. although not a full season mechanic but rather a similar time-gated event. many were not fan of those. for me, I'd like for prepping mechanic to be in focus again. collecting honey and stuff before the actual hunt. i felt like a true hunter. now its just A to B. i just go in to kill and loot. no prep even needed. everything is served on a silver platter now.

u know what, it will be cool if the game can take ur ip address and time zone, and decide the season base on that. meaning that if u are in the US during december, it will be cold season, but if u got a friend in Ecuador it will be the beginning of rainly season (yea but it sounds cool and may not work well at all)
@TheMoonman4 Жыл бұрын
Saying "never" so matter of factly could age this pretty hard. I think the chances are slim, but I feel like there's still potential in a seasons mechanic. It very likely wouldn't resemble how it was in Dos much, but it could still work if done right

Plesioth hitboxes aren't poorly designed, they're a feature. A season system is tedious to program, and in practice you'd find a way to skip time to whatever benefits you the most making the system an arbitrary thing that you largely ignore the overwhelming majority of the time and then have to do meaningless things to get where you want. It's like cycling advanced quests in 4U, yeah it's a design choice but did it actually make the gameplay better?

Know what? THIS would've been a fantastic old and forgotten system that gen 5 could've really used to just extend the overall game and break up the typical grind. If Capcom would've done something like, every X hunts the seasons change, it would make things so much more dynamic.
@yeetoban Жыл бұрын
These complexities were quite tedious but I think they were what especially made Monster Hunter unique in comparison to other Action-combat RPG games, like how it was comparable to Dark Souls in game style. It still kind of is, but I always enjoyed Monster Hunter partially because of that lifestyle genre gameplay it has, but as they do QOL changes with each generation, we lose a semblance of that realism.

How my brain shortened the whole video: "As if underwater being removed wasn't good enough, there was Seasons as well. Thanks for ruining game immersion for profits, Capcom. 😊" (Still love MH though. Still, hope these stuff go back though. I don't mind being gated, just do it for a good reason. 🧐) P.S. I started with Freedom Unite as well, that's why this video was basically a "WTF!?" moment for me. 😅

I think the time and seasonal change in monster strength would be cool but the food effects changing due to the season would be annoying. I also think the idea of certain monsters being more likely to appear when they aren’t the target monster during different times of day and seasons would be really cool. I don’t think they should affect when you can choose certain quests as that would be annoying to deal with. At best I think they could make it so that if you go hunting in the desert during the warm season then you’ll need to bring cool drinks and visa versa for the snowy regions.

The thing with the seasons and most other mechanics in DOS is that they're really dang cool on paper but the execution is wack. Like if the answer to when you can go to gather something, hunt something, eat a certain recipe, etc. all being "You gotta look at a guide someone made online", then it's not implemented well. I think a sensible approach to reintroducing the mechanics into Modern MonHun is intertwining it with tracking levels system that World had and thus expanding on it, where by examining objects in the world/tracks left by the monster you would learn about its preferred seasons and additionally the seasonal mechanics of the level you're in, with high levels of research rewarding you with extra drops to make it worthwhile that you're trying to learn about the seasonal differences in a certain environment. I don't think any quests or hunts should be cut off from the player to allow people who just wanna hunt after a long day to still hunt, but a system rewarding people who go out and explore an enviroment and intertwining it with a time/seasonal system that communicates its mechanics in game instead of requiring spreadsheets definitely seems within the realm of possibility for MH6.

Dos had the most interesting mechanics and probably biggest generational jump of any MH game. There are so many awesome things that game did, but sadly most fans don't even know about it. Now that there are Dos servers I'm hoping to gather my friends and give it a good try.

It's a cool mechanic but in my opinion, it's very realistic. As said in the video, it's layers upon layers to the point where your playtime is mostly prepping for the next monster. Maybe something more unique might work if they do bring it back such as blocking zones in areas so you're forced to explore and certain monsters being buffed or debuffed depending on the climate.

now i'm dreaming of a mh game where u can travel to different village and they match other countries real time and season
@mathieu499 Жыл бұрын
and make it even crazier, if you are in a cold country your village will have different weapon and skill tree, armor resist to cold, and people will have to trade their 'knowledge'' by exchanging there ressources, your stamina will last longer in a freezy area / season, but in the summer u'll have to drink fresh water a lil bit more often than people who spawned on hot region. if u wanna change region, then you will have to travel, and play the travel, like having a jen mohran fight while crossing the desert on a boat this will really take the scale and feeling of a big adventure, discover countries, area, there specificity, recipe, armor skill, weapon element etc~ quest would allow you to track a disaster making monster while he migrates, making you spawn into someone's server, u'll be able to alert them the monster is coming toward them and ask for their help for an urgent quest :o wow

It could be cool to add as an environmental hazard of sorts rather than a limitation. Similar to how World had you need to drink Hot/Cold Drinks to keep the extreme temps of different areas at bay. Maybe something similar could be applied in MH6, or maybe certain areas or mechanics are only active during specific seasons (Blizzards/Low visibility areas in the winter on snow maps, Lava Geysers or Receded water in the Summer, etc) or have certain monsters be significantly stronger/more dangerous in certain seasons vs others. Like for example fighting a Velkana or Barrioth in the Winter/Cold season would be a far stronger version of the monster than average, Same with a Diablos or Rathalos in the Summer.

@deaj84506 ай бұрын
It's my favorite as well for those concepts, definitely felt like you were learning the way an actual fantasy world works. Like playing a simulator rpg in a way. But not so friendly? It's downright hostile, it wants the player to fail and learn from it.
@claisolais6 ай бұрын
@@deaj8450 Hostile indeed. It wants playter to failed and hopefully they learn from it---It barely has any guide whatsoever. Though, they've made many things almost cheap by being "friendly nowadays...I guess they cant away from big bucks. Fun is replicable, but experiences are unique in their own ways. All to make me love my DOS even more. I wish that I can live to see a MH reboot.

monster hunter definitely change their direction with the game from the old gen.. i play since the first monster hunter game.. and i can tell they learn that most people only care about the hunting aspect of the game.. and minority of people like my self enjoy the game as a whole... and they going in the right direction because capcom have some financial problem.. and monster hunter single handedly carry the company.. so they go for the majority.. i get it.. and still love the game.. but i wish i actually feel being part of the world like i did back in the old gen MH
@shuraizo2877 Жыл бұрын
The way it was implemented sounds like amazing for the novelty, but annoying for gameplay, much like Astera in World. However, I do think it would be cool if it was brought back in some way, like powering up the monsters and changing which smaller ones appear in higher quantity
@fromgames3123 Жыл бұрын
I wish the future game features various modes of difficulty in the title screen which would allow people of different liking to enjoy the game the way they want, and allowing some of the older features to return. Many games does this, it wouldn't be rare if Capcom did this. Just as an example in Minecraft there are creative, normal and survival modes.

MH2 is the only MH game that I play but didn't finish. Thank you for the great video, it was indeed a brilliant idea on paper and could work in a certain type of game, maybe a more hardcore version of MH outside of the mainline series just like how there is an MH Story cuz this kind of mechanic in MH Rise or World would be too much of a pain as I play MH for the combat while the rest is just bonus I got the game in Japanese and it was real confusing and I was too young at that time then I never come back to it. I do remember it being a step up from the original but then I got my hand on MHFU and I never run out of content before I played tri so I just didn't bother even tho I love MH1 and I beat it using action replay to unlock stuff
