I've seen other mold makers put two small flat pieces of wood on either side of the mold to give even pressure. Rubber bands and tape around the perimeter only put pressure on the corners. This causes the rubber to bulge in the middles of the mold. This may open up the seams in the cut lines of the mold. This may be the source of the leaks.

Next step is coming soon but I’m trying to build a vacuum casting table before I do but I’m not sure it if it’s going to work.

sometimes surface-bubbles are caused by overheated wax. Keep it up, you have talent

Use a wood dowel to pour against when pouring from a very full pot. Hold it against the edge of the pot. The liquid will follow the dowel instead of dribbling down the side of the pot. If your sprue/inlet allows, just pouring it faster might do the trick. 3rd option: use a bigger pot.

I'd go with pouring the wax into a smaller Pyrex (tm) measuring pitcher first. I guess you could even melt the wax in the pitcher. They are oven save borosilicate glass.

Uh... Why do the sprue AFTER? Isn't easier to do the sprue on the clay model and use it both for the wax casting and have it there for the bronze?
@lundgrenbronzestudios
@lundgrenbronzestudios Жыл бұрын
Sometimes you want to move the sprues because you find it’s casts better. Some times there are different casting methods like ceramic shell or investment casting where you sprue things differently. It’s better to add the. Sprues after.

Would a soldering iron be any good for melting wax?

It does work if you are carful but it gets much too hot. I will use one sometimes for somethings. I’m getting better at spruing the more I do it.

Nahh.. More fun to get oily microcrystalline wax all over the stove! I prefer the burn your hands method myself.

An axe? Seriously? Just hit it with a hammer. 1st wax pour into a silicone never works for me. Preheating the silicone with a hair dryer helps. I don't start getting good wax pulls until my 3rd or 4th attempt. I swear the silicone has to season. Suggestion for you. BUY YOUR SPRUES! Wax sprue is very cheap. It's a different wax that melts at a much lower temp than your brown microcrystalline. Reason for this is it melts first and gets the hell out of the way before expansion screws you during dewax. When sprueing, feed fat parts first, then vent off the thinner sections back to the cup. This way you can control how it solidifies. Fingers crossed for ya. When you pour that, be sure your investment is UP TO TEMP. Do NOT pour metal into an unheated flask. Because of his thickness, I would be tempted to keep a kiln up at 1500, pull the flask, pour the bronze and put him back in the kiln, close the door and shut it off. Just a thought. Pouring that hollow just takes planning, kinda too late this time, but it could still be done. The feet would still be solid, but the body really should be hollow. Want the secret? Slosh the silicone halfs and assemble. You will have to have a HOLE under him for the investment to fill up. You buy a welder yet? If you are serious about this stuff, you will have to learn to tig weld. Probably not something you'll want to do in your kitchen.

worldtraveler this was is so gummy it didn’t want to break with a hammer. I got a new wax that seems like it will be better to work with and is less gummy. Once I try the pour with this I will try to make a hollow one. I don’t have a welder yet but I bought some silicon bronze mig welding wire and my dad has a mig welder that I might try next time I visit him. As usual you are a wealth of knowledge and I really do appreciate it!

@@lundgrenbronzestudios I use arizona sculpture's 2ab150 wax. arizonasculpture.com/j-mac-microcystalline-wax-2-ab150/ It only gets gummy above about 95degrees F. I've never mig welded silbronze. I imagine it works fine, but you will need argon. I wouldn't dink around with mig mix gas or co2. Just my opinion. If you are on a budget, take a serious look at the new AHP alpha tig. It's way more machine than you'll need, but it won't break the bank. For little detailed work like this, nothing beats tig. Hell, even a hazard fart stick welder for 149bucks with a torch and gas bottle would be better than mig. One thing is for certain, if you are going to cast bronze, you have to learn to tig. Very seldom do I cast something that doesn't require a little bit of work with the torch. Are you signed up at thehomefoundry.org yet? Lot's of guys like us hang out there. Easier to communicate instead of across YT.
