Whenever I need to remove a fitting and there is a lot of rust involved, I like to thread on another fitting on the open end so that the threat of crushing the pipe is lessened. Saved my bacon a few times with that hack. Looks like you didn't have a need to save that old, galvanized nipple so it's a moot point but still... Great video John thumbs up.

Looking forward to the diy plucker video next 😁. I like this approach more than the turkey fryer I’m using. However, I do use the shrink bags and it’s nice to use the same pot and water for shrinking as I do for scalding (just crank the flame once all the chickens is neked 😁)

1:20 I've used it to repair leaks in my pool skimmer. You can apply it right to the pipe underwater.

2:14 You might want to use this on a circuit/outlet that is protected by a GFCI if you are worried about getting shocked.

I didn't got your explanations in the video at first , so this might help somebody: P(Power,Watt), U(Voltage,Volt), I(Current,Ampere) P=U*I I=U/R => P=U²/R The resistance of the heating element is fixed, also you know your Voltage. So getting the power from the voltage and resistance is (as shown above) done with P=U²/R, so if you divide U by 2, you get (U/2)²/R = (U²/R)/4 which will give you a quarter of power compared to full voltage.

would it have been a good idea to leave the sheet metal and insulation on after you cut it in half? Good stuff... I found an old water heater in my basement when we moved in... I am looking to do the same thing.

That master welder I mentioned from Laos also raises chickens...I mean he is from Laos; of course he has chickens, ha. I found him a solution to plucking chickens that is far easier. It was a motor that had a bunch of special design rubber fingers on the drive shaft. The fingers would smack the chicken, grab the feathers, and pluck. You just have to stick the chicken under it. The fingers are inexpensive as they are produced for the industrial chicken industry. Another option is a chicken plucking drum. It is a spinning drum filled with those rubber fingers. Throw your dead chicken in, add just a little water, and bang, your chickens are plucked. I never used one, but I saw it used. It looks super violent, ha, but the chicken come out undamaged...just naked.

@@FarmCraft101 When my mother and I got pheasants back in the day, we would just take their entire skin off rather then try to pluck them. It came off easier then expected. I guess birds are just like that. Easier then a catfish that is for sure, ha.

Instead of boiling water on the stove you could build a propane burner under it.

It needs to be covered during heating, a lot of energy is running away to atmosphere. I would also solder those twisted wires to prevent oxidation, before putting the insulation cap.

Could use the sun for a couple days before plugging it in. That might help like up to maybe a hundred degrees if you paint the tank black. Later

I use an lp burner to get it up to temp then lower the flame. Common to turkey fryers or big camp stoves. Are you using a whiz bang chicken plucker? They are hilarious but work great. Thirty seconds and you are done.

But does it maintain a temperature of 145 degrees? Or does hit 145 and shut off until temperature drops to say around 120 degrees and then turn back on again to reheat to 145?

I would have taken a weedburner torch and pointed it at the side for 20 min for preheat. 240V extension cords holding back 25Amps of any length are spendy.

I know this is a couple months late, but why not install that second heating element that came out of the water heater? If nothing else, you'll double the surface area of heating elements that are making contact with the water

That would double the power, meaning you'd need a 40A breaker for 240V, or 20A for 120V (and the 120V with two elements set up would still be half as good as a single element at 240V).

I'm kinda surprised you didn't sandblast the entire rusted area out and then put a thin coat of JB weld or some epoxy paint over the top.

That's a hell of a lot of work for minimal, if any, benefit. The rust isn't going to hurt anyone. I'd rather have a bit of rust on the chicken than epoxy residue.

How many BTUs per chicken? The final calculation will reveal time between chickens. Probably more BTUs are lost directly so that spray foam could be replaced with feathers for a farm look.

i really dont see why being cautious is seen as a negative thing. "ooh youre a safety Nelly, because you take like .5 seconds longer to make sure you dont die." the way i see if, people who actively look down on safety are arrogant fuckwitts that endanger themselves and others. sure 99 times out of 100 its going to be safe. but do you know that for a fact? what are you gonna tell your family that other 1 time in 100? even if you dont have family, its just irresponsible, it sets a bad example and could burden hospitals and waste tax money for shit that could have been prevented. but for the want of a few seconds and false bravado they werent.
