Making a Custom Model T Roll Pan - 1927 Model T Rat Rod

In this video I tackle the last item missing on the 1927 Model T, the roll pan. When I originally picked up the body it was missing the deck lid and the filler panel below. Since the trunk lid fits pretty good I wanted to carry on with the roll pan and start fitting the tail lights. It was a fairly simple panel to make however it did require the inner structure to be re-build as it was rotted away. Now it's all back together and looking great!
Thanks for watching and the continued support!

Hey Dan!, I say paint the T. You come this far you might as well go all the way, just as far as you can to get this thing looking really really sharp. You know it's a keeper and it's going to be with you for a long long time. So be happy and get the car happy make it look as good as it possibly can. That old piece of yard art deserves it. Long Live T-Wrecks!!!!!!😷🧻👍

Okay, Your T is really starting to take shape. and looking good thus far. A couple of things, first, there is a slight curve in that panel which you could have duplicated by forming it over a piece of 6" pipe. If it where mine I would do it over. Second, I would shorten up the rear axle a little on both ends so that the tires are within an inch of the wheel tubs. Makes for a cleaner look. And yes, I vote for some paint even if it is a satin sheen. Keep up the great progress !!!

I have an idea for the louvered panel. Use an old style T-shaped, keyed garage door knob and then alter the back side so it has a flat tab that engages the lip to secure it. Or if you want you could actually make it work like it does on the garage door and have a rod on each side that goes into a hole on each side when the knob is turned. It's a very inexpensive solution that I think would work very well to give you a locking trunk area. And those T shaped knobs would match the period of the car as many of them had T shaped handles.

HEY Dan ! things are lookin' mighty fine.Big difference having a tail pan.For paint you could just do the Tremclad route .I've got new wire wheels you could fit on that nice blue angle grinder you have to take off as much of that surface rust as you can .Check online for a recipe for a paint /thinner mix and roller it on with a 6 inch lint free roller.Try the red oxide primer first then if ya want to... pick a color. It will be thicker than spray bomb. Their black comes with 3 choices flat, gloss and semi gloss.I"m sure you'll figure it out, and it's easy enough to change. You could also with your bead roller make your own license plate shaped piece of sheet metal ...louver it ...and put "DD Speedshop" on it. Don't see anything illegal about that.I'm not back to work til Tuesday , yup I'm a yapper, and I need the break.

Deck lid/lower panel use two 'L" shapes that fit together/overlap in the correct orientation [gives strength to the lid and something for the bottom to butt up against; if it ever came to it, it also gives a place to fasten adjustable stops so to control how far down the deck goes (in/out/flush)]. Assuming hinge action is at the top. The difficulty with installing and rolling/shaping on the car is not that it can't work its that there is always some pressure/stress on the metal and you never know where exactly it is, to what degree it is and, perhaps more importantly, what it will do. Example, hit a bump and it might oil can the other way. IIRC from the live feed you cut holes in that lower rear panel to put lights, guessing the metal moved a fair bit as those holes will relieve any pressure in that immediate area. You saw the other up locally, funny how the patina looks the same. Near identical, more pink/brown than rust.

I have 5 "drop in" anchors set in my garage floor that I use to attach my winch to...easiest way to pull cars in...without them, it is almost impossible to move cars around...just requires a hammer drill and a concrete drill bit...they sit flush with the floor and you just use a large bolt to screw into them which is the anchor for your winch.

Here is just a thought because I haven’t seen any do this. When making a panel, be it a rat rod or whatever so here goes. Make a cardboard template of the panel you want to create and then go to your junk yard with you template and compare body panels til you find a panel that matches your template. Then ask how much to have the skin cut off. It could match your whatever and you would have to figure out whatever you might have to bend flat metal to recreate the panel you need to create.

Love your videos... I'm trying to bring back a '56 Rambler Wagon from the Dead... Needs a bit of floor work knocked out some of the major dents... Hoping the Drivetrain is good... Still haven't heard the engine run. Mostly just cleaning it up it sat for a long time in a Very Dusty environment.

@@DDSpeedShop It's obvious you have the skill level to make it happen. Blue, maybe Green or Yellow; with chrome headers and some chrome on the engine. Black interior, wow, what a car. But the metal work you do is awesome and goes with the flow. Thanks for sharing.

I say you should do it exactly how you want. It’s your car. Paint, patina or combination of the two. Even pigeon crap is a look.

It's coming along great! Out of old t's and a's and idk what's the curved roof is the one I'd lean towards but the way this is coming out is still good. I would say do that terrible Ford black like what would be on it new. David frieburger has a t that's "that" black for reference. It's terrible. But it just fits lol once you've welded all this new metal on you dont have the original patina so theres not too much point to try and keep it I would say. But either way itll come out looking cool. Also maybe do a Corvette tri power (or similar) for that 50s speed parts look... lol

Go on Goonzquad. They're doing a box truck as an off road camper. With an olive drab, flat black, flat beige and flat cranberry paint scheme , they rattle canned a camo scheme that looks awesome. How many "T's" in camo have you ever seen?

on the deck lid if you want it stronger you need to build the x type frame put on inside on deck lid will help it from bending plus help with the noise of body flexing ,

Trunk latch? A push button VW engine deck latch would work but the lowest center louver is in the way! Above posts suggest frenching the license plate. Correct, the proper taillights don't need frenching, their shape will flow with the body lines. But what about hiding a latch release behind a hinged frenched licence, you'll need it to open your 'louvered filler'? Deck lid stability? Get Brent to plasma cut a pair of scrolled side pieces to weld a rectangular framework fitting the top, sides and bottom rain channels which the lid is fastened. Then as another post suggested form a bead roller sheet metal X or horizontal K inner lid brace.
