Psychedelics, Making a Deal with God, the Unity of Music, Wilderness Therapy, Untying Identity from Physical Appearance....this episode has it all!
Dive deep into the soul-stirring journey of renowned musician Matisyahu, where music and mysticism collide in an unforgettable revelation.
We explore Matisyahu's self-diagnosed learning disabilities, his life as "the last hippie", and the spiritual awakening that led him from dropping out of high school to become a Dead Head and follow Phish on tour, to a stint in rehab and an empowering experience in a wilderness therapeutic program.
This is a RAW & REVEALING account of how psychedelic experiences, spirituality, and music have intertwined to shape his path from a troubled youth to a reggae music sensation!
Matisyahu also opens up about his move toward becoming very religious in his Jewish faith - including growing an extremely recognizable beard and studying at the yeshiva - the intersectionality between reggae and Judaism, the underground healer who saved his life, and the ebbs and flows of his relationship with religion....PLUS where he’s currently at with it now.
From pairing psychedelic drugs with spirituality and music at an early age - leading to a deep calling to dedicate his life to God and his music career - to the pressures of fame driving him to shave his iconic beard, this episode is a very personal examination of the ties between loneliness and spirituality.
Don't miss this powerful episode that challenges us to question: Does God feel pestered by humanity?

Don't judge me,. I''m 54 & not a Jewish person, I respect the people, but I have no idea who he is...but I will try to get some of his music to hear. Seems to me he has been blessed, the way he described his children 🥰😎

Psychedelics are great, one time I was trippin on too much Acid and I was staring at a fire pit and the fire pit turned into a mini world with little people and buildings, it was 2 years ago and it's such an experience to remember. would love to try out the Magic mushrooms next, just dont know where to get them, so hard to come by

I've had some intense experiences with loneliness, especially with being forgotten. It hurts like crazy but it makes me creative. I start writing and sketching. At that point there is definitely a certain spirituality to it. For me that feels very healing.💝

I see at the books on your back Jessica Radloff’s TBBT one! Knowing that you’ll reprise your Amy’s character along with Jim Parson’s Sheldon at the YS finale, may I, we, ask you to have Jim here at MBB for an adorable episode, preferable in studio, using the time you two will be together at LA? I’m sure that all MBB followers will add here at my petition! It’d be a way to close perfectly the circle somehow.. Said that, another fabulous episode!! Specially Divine Connexion part with Matisyahu!

As a Toronto Jew of a certain age (who still goes to see Dead cover bands featuring friends from high school), it's remarkable how familiar our cultural influences are. Jews who love jambands is a thing! Something else that stood out for me in this conversation is how unacknowledged privilege plays a role in M's story; it's in his access to treatment (rather than incarceration), being able to flow in and out of school and jobs and home(s), and in his liberty to wear dreads and appropriate musical styles without the backlash that racialized people would face.

Very cool, this talk with Matisyahu, and his evolution to a broader spiritual experience. As a post WWII Baby Boomer, I grew up in a predominantly agnostic household, until my family moved to a North Shore Long Island town, dubbed the “Golden Ghetto”, and we joined a Reformed Congregation. Funny, mentioning a study where attending Hebrew school had a negative effect. Since early childhood I have always been spiritually focused. I recall reading stories by Issac Bashevis Singer as a girl. And in one of the stories he mentions Kabbalah. So, my 10 year old self, went and asked my Hebrew School Teacher if I could learn more about it. I remember she looked at me, like I had two heads, and immediately shot me down with: “ No, you have to be at least 40 years old, and a man”. Even then, my reaction was WTF. I never was Bat Mitzvah, and while appreciative of my Jewish roots/heritage, continued my personal spiritual journey down other avenues. (Yoga, Vedanta, Buddhism)

Thanks Mayim. Loved this one. Wish I could have joined in on the conversation. I know Matis from his connection in Philadelphia. He's a lot younger, but if he's interested, let him know we could learn together. Not to snub you, but if you also have interest in learning, I would be open to trying something with you too. And just to build on the gematria you pointed out at the end of the show, his upcoming 34 (לד) shows, all on one theme, meaning his new album, is 35 (לה, for her). Like the Ba'al Shem Tov emphasizes in regard to his Kavanot for the Mikvah (which must be filled with 40 se'ah of water (מים) to be valid, and able to serve its purpose), this pertains to renewal, birth and the potential for new life (אלד) and is the "Roshei-Teivot" from the phrase we say at the beginning of the Amidah prayer (אתה גבור לעולם אדני), meaning אגל״א. Only blessings.

There is no law which says that you must always be producing, creating, inventing, financing, acting, hosting , entertaining, achieving, or any other "ing". If your upbringing dictates constant activity, who cares? We are not our parents, Mayim. Thankfully , I broke some generational cycles myself. Not easy (and some family members still think i should be a drunk , like the rest of them) ...but worth it .

Matisyahu was born a Cancer zodiac sign. So many Cancers I know abandon direction they had for a long time. On the flip side he is annoying as hell and it sounds like he is forcing all his spirituality. Which goes to show that just because someone is exception at one on thing doesn’t mean they are exceptional or know anything about anything. He looks and sounds completely lost and I’m not saying that because of his religious beliefs.
