Stainless I presume, but you're not tig welding. Do you have gas, at least? Could this be done with a flux-core welder?

Hello Kyle! I want to do this with a santoku knife I got a while back... handle gave out, so I pulled the blade out and its tang is barely 2 inches long. Blade says it's stainless, but I'm not sure what kind of stainless. I have a buddy with a welder who said they could tack it up to extend it for me like you've done here. Since I don't know what I'm working with, is it bad for the longevity of the knife if I tack weld the blade tang to a different kind of metal? Thanks in advance!

how strong is a weld? isn't the whole point of a full tang that it's one solid integrated piece of steel... how much of a benefit is having some additional steel tack welded onto the partial tang?

Depends but if welding helps massive cruise ships to not crumble i would trust it

Welding is not a skill I have so I admire it all the more. Great job! I do love repairing/recycling items. Here in the states at least, we have largely become a use and throw away society.

You're on the money with your guess as to how the original handle was installed. They had a handle blank with a kerf (from a circular saw, that's why the tang has a semi-circular profile at the end) to insert the tang into. The tang would be exposed on top of the handle and hidden at the underside; put in the rivets, hammer them tight and you're done. If you are interested in seeing an old German craftsman making these traditional handles, there's footage on youtube (commentary in German only, but still might be interesting to watch for the craft): v=a6YnsgieLRo
