Yes, was gonna say something similar- if you soak fabric in water, (not dripping), you lay it over the foam, you can smooth it out, once the foam cures the fabric will peel right off leaving less shaping and smoothing with the rasp to be done

You mean while the foam is still wet or often it's dry?

Your next video should be how you store all of your creations. I'm fighting for space with my wife (she likes christmas decorations) for the ever growing pile of Halloween decorations. If you can find the 3M froth-pak spray foam can be sprayed in much thinner, smoother, and stronger layers.

My partner is not too happy, but he doesn’t get much say in the matter. 😉 I would love to know how they store this beautiful creature & if it stands up to time. I worry the body will get damaged.

FYI: Immediately after covering the surface with foam, take a spray bottle and spray the entire thing down with water. Really get it good and soaked. Within a few minutes it will start to develop a skin. No waiting until the next day, and then having to do a bunch of messy shaving and carving on it. In about 15 to 20 minutes you can literally take your hands and push and squeeze on it, using your hands and fingers to flatten it out and mold shapes into it, and you won't get any foam on your hands because the water causes the outer layer to form a skin. Keep in mind, this expanding foam stuff doesn't dry; it cures, and what cures it is the humidity in the air. The more moisture, the faster the cure. Which is why spraying it down with a spray bottle forms a skin within minutes and allowed you to form it with your hands. A little trick I leaned from Stilt Beast Studios. Here's an example of him making a mask out of spray foam, and how he wets it down and then is able to mold it with his fingers. 🡺 kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp2qYXxnjrV0gqM

Awesome spider! I loved watching you work together. You remind me of my hubs and myself! One tip: CARDBOARD BOXES! Chicken wire is a huge pain-in-the-a$$! If you just use boxes, you can beat them into shape and even duct tape them together to make as big as you want, then go to town with the expanding foam. We made garden "boulders" this way. One is almost 4x5 feet and everyone thinks they are real! Lots of hit and miss work with paint and shading, but we finally got them to look real. People freak out when we pick them up and toss them around! Great spider...you're giving me ideas! Fun stuff and cheap!

Few things they don’t mention. How to hold the spider up. Gotta make a stand for it that digs in to the dirt. I had to put a wooden base under the spider then covered with foam, now I was able to screw on a base to it and you won’t lose it with a wind storm. Legs won’t hold themselves up with that gauge steel. They probably positioned them perfectly with no wind just for the final pic. You’ll need thicker steel (at least for the first segment), and a pvc end cap where you can stick it in to hold it up like a flag pole.

So we aren't done yet but I have a few tips to others so far. 1.Buy the 12 spray foam cans. You will need them. 2.Definitely will try what someone suggested in the comments to wet the spray foam once it is starting to dry, to mold it instead of trying to shave. The shaving works but It was quite a workout, and not the fun kind. 3. When connecting the legs, apply the rubber cement AND LET IT DRY before trying to stick the pieces together. I've watched this video about 30 times while working on our spider and I never caught that line. I was frustrated and completely covered in contact cement trying to get the leg joints to stick. I almost decided to go a different direction, until I watched the video one more time and caught that very important line. We painted some on waited 3 minutes and 30 seconds and then it sticks together no problem and holds tight. Ill be picking contact cement of my hands all day today (which is kind fun) but if you want to save yourself a big hassle, definitely don't miss the "LET DRY BEFORE STICKING" part.
