Just a question, why blue it with a torch to then only sand off the blued steel? Beautiful knife good work

That was to soften en the steel a bit and make it rougher, the color is not permanent

Good video. Have you used this knife? I'm very curious about the squared gut hook. Can you tell me if you found that it works better with that style, I've always used the more oval edged ones and to be honest they are a pain to sharpen. Thanks

This was a custom order, I didn't get to use it but yes the square should be easier to sharpen

Love the knife. The file seemed to be cutting pretty well after heat treat? How hard is it?

Just curious why you went from the toaster over to the heat treat oven then annealed the spine

I just use the toaster oven to get the temper started asap after the blades come down to room temp, while I wait for buy kiln to cool down. The toaster oven doesn't get hot enough, but works as a stop gap for that. I don't always temper the spine out, in this case I wanted to mainly to temper around the gut hook a little more for some a additional toughness.

It might be self explanatory to some, but can someone explain under which circumstances would the gut hook be used?. Thanks

For outdoorsmen and sportsmen like myself the gut hook is extremely important. To be honest none us even use it for "gutting" game, as most of us don't gut game anymore we simply quarter without disturbing the bacteria found both in the intestines but also the intestine cavity. What the gut hook is most used for is making the skinning slits from each extremity. Down the inside of each leg and neck. When you do this operation with a gut hook you minimize hair exposure to the meat. When you do it the old fashioned way with a knife blade you almost always push hair into the cut and in turn onto your meat. Cleaner faster process. Gut hook is by far the most important aspect of a big game field knife.

@@dantedelorentis4932 excellent explanation, thank you for the details. I didn’t know that the meat could be contaminated by pushing wild game hair into it. Thanks again
