In this video I am making a leather Moleskine journal or notebook cover. If you wish to make this style of cover yourself build along pattern #3 is available from my shop here and includes a full length tutorial video:
► leodisleather....?section_id=15216140
This video was made along with Metropolitan leather who asked me to help them celebrate their centenary year (1919-2019) by making something from a piece of their leather. The leather used in the video is their Lamport leather in the mid tan colour. All leathers are available here:

Ian, Greetings from the United States. I hope you and your family are safe and well during this world health crisis. I have been following you for several years now. You are the standard by which I judge my products and creations. One of my dreams is to fly to the UK and hopefully sit down with you over dinner and discuss leather work for an hour or so. We would love to host you here in the United States. Take care. Be safe and well.

Hi everyone, here's a video which I've done in conjunction with Metropolitan leather to celebrate their centenary year. All the details are in the video description as well how to buy the pattern if you'd like to make this yourself (the pattern includes a full length tutorial video)

I like the way you used the drafting triangle to line up the centerline of the strap when gluing it down. That was very clever (and effective). I hope that I remember that technique the next time I have some odd-shaped piece like that.

Hi Ian. Looks neat. Great technique. Once I cutted the slot for the elastic band after I had stitched it. And Yes I cutted through the front cover as well. Its all about preparation as you showed. Great work mate and its good to have you around again. 👍👍👍👍

What is that circle template you use for cutting around corners? I've watched your toolset videos but I didn't see it in there, seems like a very handy tool instead of always fishing through change and washers for the correct radius.

I really hate seeing your stitching segments. I'm still trying to get those sort of results after quite a few attempts. I suspect most people don't realize the skill and patience it takes make that happen. It's not just the skill in the running of the needles, it is the precision of the punching that brings that about. As always--well done. It's wonderful to see you again. You were missed. Relax and Stitch On.

Hi Ian, could I ask where you got the wooden slicker for your edge burnishing? I'm trying to get away from the constant taper on the end, so thinking about turning my own. It's hard to grip with the constant taper. Thanks, Herb

Beautiful, beautiful work as always. Your name keeps popping up on other leatherworkers' sites - with good reason. Ian, it's nice that you cut a slit for the elastic to go through, but I'm not sure it's needed once the notebook has its own cover. Moleskines have a separate bookmark anyway and I've found that, if anything, the elastic just makes it harder to write on the right hand page. Or is there some other reason for it?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 3 жыл бұрын
this pattern is for sale so it's up to people purchasing it whether they want to put the slit in for the elastic or not. If I make things for sale on my shop rather than specific orders then I'll usually put it in because it can't then be done after construction.

Great video, as ever. One question... you heated the dividers before marking the stitching line. Never seen that done before, what was the reason?
@Leodis.Leather
@Leodis.Leather 5 жыл бұрын
if you're just stitching they make a good enough mark however as this mark is continued around the whole perimeter including the bit between the stitching it makes a stronger impression when heated

Ian, you are one skilled craftsman. That is a superb cover very smart,,, if anyone was to supply the dimensions of their journal, better still send you a new blank one, would you be willing to make a cover for that? Granted this is bespoke work and would have to be costed up accordingly, worth it though. I made a cover for my A5 size Enigma journal which is double the thickness of a Breeze journal... it was to look old, antique, and very rustic and the result in a word was...crap! 🤭. 🥴. but its better than the flimsy cardboard cover... it’s really pleasing to have you back with us Ian, and I’m sure we all hope you will post your projects / commission work for us to watch Best wishes maestro... LeZc @@ Etsy shop for orders mate???

Hi Lez, it would depend on the suitability of the notebook but yes it's possible. The advantage to sticking to well known ones like the Moleskines is it's easy to get refills though. These can be ordered on Etsy yes.
