My son just started taking guitar lessons, so I decided to make him his own guitar so he would stop stealing mine! He requested an ocean design, so my friend Sam from DIY Huntress helped me achieve that! Thanks so much Sam! It's just how I pictured it!

On playing demo tuning or intonation sounded a bit off. If nut was too high, that could be the reason. Also fretboard looks too dry, some dunlop lemon oil (not normal lemon oil!!!) can fix that. Otherwise wonderful build, if you just start with project like that, i guess soon you'll make big custom shop builders shy.
@3x3CustomTamar
@3x3CustomTamar 4 жыл бұрын
You are totally right. I brought it into my local guitar shop. The tech there filed down the nut and taught me how to do it for the next one. Now it sounds great. And I used regular lemon oil 😬
@frankquinn1296
@frankquinn1296 4 жыл бұрын
@@3x3CustomTamar I loved this video, Lemon oil is not an answer, I am no guitar builder but my much respected guitar tech told me to use normal oil lemon has a chemical factor in that has a detrimental effect on wood? I have no clue but I did notice a difference when I stopped using lemon oils on my rosewood necks
@bazwillrun

@@frankquinn1296 Change your guitar tech...I've been using lemon oil since i dont know how far back, 40 or so years and never ever had any problems whatsoever
@justinvzu01
@justinvzu01 3 жыл бұрын
@@bazwillrun Literally every modern guitar tech/builder tells you not to use real lemon oil. Dunlop formula 65 lemon oil is not really lemon oil, so it's safe. Strong lemon oil will ruin the wood by actually drying it, and loosen loosen up the adhesives holding the fret and fretboard down. 1% or 0% lemon oils are totally safe and SHOULD be used on any non-Maple fretboard.

@@3x3CustomTamar well for both things it really depends on the tape... for the Superglue maskingtape thing, you need good masking tape for it to work. And the whole reason you do it is that most double sided tapes really leave ugly glue stuf behind... of cause if you find the right double sided tape for that job (that doesnt leave glue behind). I see no reason not to use it ;)

The way you include your mistakes and talk through your process makes it all seem so accessible. I've had a couple projects on the back burner (Designed them but not started construction) for a while now and can legitimately say your videos have inspired me to just start doing. Hey, there are plenty videos out there that show how the break angle of the neck is related to bridge height. I guess by now you've figured it out. Long story short, the classic LP has a carved top, that keeps following the break angle of the neck. On the other hand the Juniors that I've seen have a different bridge installed to accommodate for a flatter top. I've never built a LP until now, but I would personally drill the ground hole from the post hole towards the control cavity. That way, if I do a mistake, I would end up ruining the back. All in all I just dropped by to say CONGRATS! it looks amazing! Sounds ok, and I am sure that it also feels SUPER!

Hey, thanks! Yeah, I ended up bringing it into my local guitar shop and the issue I was having was a nut issue. He filed the slots down for me and now it sounds perfect up by the cowboy chords. ha

Awesome build 👍😎 You are right about the nut needing to be filed lower to get the action down on the low frets. I typically use a pencil that I have sanded basically in half down the center, it gives a nice flat edge you can rest on the first 2 - 3 frets then you just draw a line on the nut. It will be level with the fret height then just file the slots to the very top of that line, that should give you the perfect amount of clearance and a nice low action on your low frets (nearest the nut). If your action on the other end is too high then you need to lower the bridge, if that gives you fret buzz then either your frets need to be redone or you don't have enough relief in the neck (concave in the middle by about 0.5mm - 1mm). This is just a rough guide, you can easily find exact measurements online but for a quick setup this is what I typically do and it works very well. You can also get your action even lower if you do a tapered level on your high frets (nearest bridge). I typically tape some thin cardboard from the 12th fret to about the 7th fret then resting your leveling beam on that you will get a slight taper toward the 22nd fret (or 24th if it is a 24 fret neck). Mark your frets with a sharpy and sand down until all the frets are now leveled to the taper. I do this on all my guitars I use for heavier stuff that likes a low action. You can taper from higher up the fretboard or lower as you prefer but personally I find tapering from the 12th down gets the action I like. Make sure you recrown the frets when done. I wish I had all the tools I need to build my own guitars but I don't have the space for them all so I have to settle for modifying my existing ones :)

From Leo: Great Job! to avoid the difficult hole for the bridge ground, just drill from the pickup cavity to the bridge bushing hole and drag the wire under the pickup through the pickup wire hole, works perfect. Been there, done that.

You are an inspiration. I was intimidated to make my own guitar body, but your process pretty well insures success. Best tutorial I have seen. The ocean pour could not be any better. Since you said you may make more, I would suggest you make a clamp on drill guide, for the wiring holes. You may be right about adjusting the neck angle. For a prototype build, maybe make a "bolt on" neck. Then you could deliberately reduce the angle, install test strings, and tweak you router guide angle as needed. For certain if you bought a nut, it will need to be filed for the range of string weights you want to use. For a solid body, "rock" guitar, a set of strings gauged from 10 - 46 is a good starting point. The nut files are a bit pricey. I have heard a set of gas welding torch, tip cleaning wires, will work. I have not tried that however. Great job!

Tamar, once again you have created a beautiful piece of work! I can see why you would consider building your own neck. You'd have more control of the choice of wood used and thus more control over a match or contrast to the body of the guitar.

Beautiful guitar build and very clever solution to routing the angle in the neck pocket. And speaking of angles, the angle of the neck is likely fine and it is expected that you would have to raise the bridge accordingly (within reason). The real problem is most likely at the nut (the slots need to be lowered) and/or with too much neck relief. Solutions to both of these problems are very well represented all over KZbin. Your friend who poured the ocean is clearly a very skilled and imaginative artist and your son is one lucky young man. As for your woodworking skills, well, I am envious, to say the least. Liked and subscribed. Thanks for sharing.

Very great work. Just as a remark: it is a better and safer way to shield the cavities with conductive paint (grounded) or aluminum foil (grounded) than adding a ground cable to the strings. Background: if there is a malfunctioning in the amp (e.g. a beverage leaking into it, as guitarists need to put their beer somewhere on stage), mains voltage cold be on the ground wire and therefore on the strings (guitarists have died this way). Shielding and grounding the cavities removes the classical humming which goes away as soon as you touch the strings (actually, your body is inducted by electromagnetic fields from e.g. lamps and induces that into the wires, grounding the body stops that). Better go that way!
