Only hand tools woodworking - Simple Japanese style oak mallet. Sometimes you need a light hit, and you don’t always have a free hand to hit through the pad, so I decided to make a mallet with leather overlays. The handle is apparently made of sapele - a remnant of a parquet board. As always maple and walnut, the finishes are usually tung oil with carnauba wax.

For a wonderful hammer made of titanium and stainless steel, as well as a planer knife made of titanium and incredible steel, many thanks to Luke from Zen Woo Tools - zenwutoolworks.com

Beautiful make. Can't beat the shearing sound of a well sharpened plane, the crunch of a perfectly weighted metal mallet on super sharp chisels and the sight of applying oil finish to complimentary coloured woods. Combine that with steady, confident & purposeful actions you get a perfect project video. Superb a pleasure to watch

Ya know? With your joinery skills, and access to beautiful hardwoods. Assuming you have all your basic hand tools. Even if you don't, you can plan accordingly. I'd say it's high time to make your own H.O. Studley tool cabinet. I'd certainly like to see it.

@cliomania_history
@cliomania_history 10 ай бұрын

He’s placing a very high quality and very sharp metal blade on wood. How is that going to ruin it? Unless he places it by accident on something hard like metal then there’s nothing to worry about.

A great design which the old vikings already used. The handle is bigger on the top end and the harder you hit the tighter the fit gets. Great!

Nice job. I'm the person who asked about your BMI tape measure and I bought one. It's been great. Now, I've admired that Clifton long enough. Even though I own a fleet of high end hand planes I just ordered a 5&1/2 Clifton to add. You may want to consider a merch portal where you would earn some of what people like me are paying to get tools we see you use. Thanks again.

Great Job. I noticed that you dont have soft-jaws on your bench vise. If you use ply to line both jaws, there is a product called "Crubber" you face them with (or leather) and it helps grip objects without damaging them.

You spent a lot of time squaring up the wood, and using a smoothing plane on it to make it have a silky finish, but then you went and made it round. Why didn't you just make it round from the start and skip the whole squaring and smoothing bit?

Well, a couple of things I would have done differently.... On cutting the head blank out, I would have lined up my saw cuts with the grain, essentially as close as I could get to actually riving a head blank out. The final product doesn't seem to have much cross grain in it though, at least less than I was expecting. I have multiple wood lathes, so I would have turned the final form on the lathe. As for the leather ends, I have no clue as to how well the wood glue will hold up. I would have gone with rubber cement/Barge. It does not dry rigid. It does look nice though.
