Thanks! Any suggestions on what you'd like to see? It's not quite possible to film every pipe I make as it takes about 3 times as long to make it while filming and another couple of hours to do the editing :P

If you go to 8:57 before you put that last coat on there it looks great in a lighter shade. That would be cool to see a pipe like that.
@MassisPipes3 жыл бұрын
I actually wanted to finish it like that back then, but messed up and had to refinish. If you take a look on my website there's a few similar ones in lighter finishes :-)

Can you tell me what multi-tool bit you're using to create your slot at 6:34? I can't find anything that's the correct size for this.
@MassisPipes4 жыл бұрын
It is a dremel bit, number 199 if I'm not mistaken. They're pretty pricey but last for ages if you're only using them for slots.

Where did you get you chuck for the metal lathe? I see them for wood lathes, did you just get one of those and just chuck it in the three jaw?
@MassisPipes2 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's a oneway chuck with adapter, clamped in the metal lathe. Far from ideal, but it works...

So is the inside of the bowl left as raw wood? or is that the closley guarded secret? if it's untreated wood I guess the bowl slowly burns as it's used? I had a wood stash pipe when I was young and I think that's what happened to it, but was wondering if the same is expected from a Finley crafted bowl like this?
@MassisPipes3 жыл бұрын
The type of wood matters most. A decent briar pipe can be left bare, it won't burn. The tobacco being burned will leave an extremely thin charcoal layer that builds up to form a cake that will protect your pipe. This is why classically, people break in their pipes by smoking 5 bowls 1/3rd full, then 5 half bowls and only then fill up the pipe completely. This paste is just an added security measure for those that smoke fast, hot and without breaking in a pipe, to ensure it doesn't burn out. But if a customer requests a pipe without bowl coating from me, I happily provide them with a bare wood pipe :-)

Hello there...your tools let me think that you are from Germany but correct me if I'm wrong. Can you tell me where I can get this little wheel to make the stems cut at the end? I don't know the correct term. Greetings
@MassisPipes7 жыл бұрын
While the lathe is in fact German, I am not. I am Belgian. The small wheel to cut the initial slot in the stem is a dremel cutter. The 199 High Speed Cutter to be precise.

One of my new favorite pipe making videos, great job! You forgot to show the part where the briar becomes a 1000mph projectile when buffing though ;) No? just me that does that? Seriously though you have my sub, keep em coming!

Yeah, I do that to, luckily it didn't happen on this pipe. However, I've never broken a pipe by launching it!

Just wondering what the origin of your brand, 'Massis', is. Is it a proper name?
@MassisPipes2 жыл бұрын
Long story, but the short version is that Massis was my nickname as a student, in reference of Belgian strongman John Massis: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Massis
@homerzsimpson96982 жыл бұрын
@@MassisPipes Thank you for the info. For a moment I thought you had called your company Massis, which is the Armenian name for Mount Ararat in Armenia.
@MassisPipes2 жыл бұрын
@@homerzsimpson9698 I'd never heard of that name for that mountain, so I'm afraid not :-) To elaborate a bit further: John Massis was his stage name, which was inspired by the Italian movies about a super strong character named Maciste, which first came out in 1914. Maciste originally was one of Hercules' nicknames :-)
