Hi Keith. Really enjoyed the Dylan break. 'cat interlude' - He's such a cutie, maybe he wants more camera time. :) Instead of the brackets, might try using a piece of either plywood or solid wood cut in a triangle for the shelving support. To make it a little fancier or matching of the mid-century look you could make the long angle on the triangle sloped (or arced). Would still give the shelf lots of support but would take a bit of extra room. Thanks for making these videos, it's enlightening to see your thought processes and how you troubleshoot while working.

Good project so far! Question (or vlog request): what stationary tools and furniture pieces (besides storage) do you highly recommend for a small shop? In the near future I'm building a shop similar in size to yours, so I'm planning on the things that would be most needed. I already have a bunch of power tools, including a table saw, planer, and miter saw, but what else is recommenced? For instance bench-top grinder/buffer, drill press, bandsaw, etc?

Dowels do not adhere well to chipboard
@anthonydean1577
@anthonydean1577 6 жыл бұрын
Rag 'n' Bone Brown I beg to differ I'm afraid. while I know you want super strong joints it's only as strong as the chipboard itself. wood glue has an amount of water which will swell the dowel a little filling any voids around it into the chipboard. therefore strongest possible..

Hi Keith just a quick tip for future reference when dividing up cabinets etc if you take your gap and deduct the thickness of your vertical partitions then divide it by the number of spaces you end up with perfectly spaced openings thats how we space things out in our workshop not that it matters here but might be handy down the line Really enjoy the vids by the way keep up the good work

Flip your work piece over on the miter saw to get double the width of cut. Also a split dado/ half lap joint would have worked out great for the divider/ support pieces. Just a few suggestions for next time maybe.

By dividing the shelves how you have the central space is slightly smaller than the two outer shelves... you need to take the internal dim then take off the width of the two widths of the dividers then divide this figure by three in order to get 3 equal compartments. I found this when doing drawings on Autocad and my dims weren’t the same!
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 6 жыл бұрын
No it isn’t, because the measurements I used were for placement of the centre of the dividers, not the edge of the dividers. All the sections are equal spacing when you work to centres
@KINGJ3R3MY
@KINGJ3R3MY 6 жыл бұрын
That’s right if you started with an overall dim from the centre of the 2 outer rails (the side panels) but not if you took the starting dim from between these... as the centre compartment has 2 half’s of a divider and the 2 outer ones only have 1

Hi Keith. I noticed when you put the bit into your router it looked like you bottomed it out against the collet and that can be dangerous as it can cause the bit not to fully tighten - www.finewoodworking.com/2014/07/15/how-to-install-a-router-bit. There should be a mark on the spindle showing where to stop but they can rub off after a while. Can’t be too careful with those beasties!

This was going to be my comment too. Fan of your chanel Keith and I'm not in the business of finger pointing other youtubers booboos....so please just consider this a well intended caution observation. Just back those router bits out about quarter of an inch.
@taitelennox4514
@taitelennox4514 6 жыл бұрын
tape does very little to prevent tearout. A much better way is to take a very thin cut through the veneer either forwards or backwards through the blade to cut through the veneer on the bottom, and than make a second cut to fully cut through.
@taitelennox4514
@taitelennox4514 6 жыл бұрын
The technique is very similar to when you cut veneered stock on a mitre saw, you first score the veneer, and than cut through. The tape worked on the veneered chipboard, but for thin veneered plywood, you will not get a better cut with tape.

Hi Keith, love the style of the unit, but a better material in my opinion would be plywood which is stronger than particle board and easier to fix together. I´m afraid I agree with several others that the metal brackets are just not right, dowels in plywood work very well but you can use them in particle board too. Another option would be to use slim wooden supports glued and pin nailed. Please don´t take comments personally. People have different views and should be encouraged to express themselves and you don´t have to agree with them. You are an inpsiration to many of us who also like working with wood. Keep up the good work.

@RagnBoneBrown

Why?
@CerberusVelvet
@CerberusVelvet 6 жыл бұрын
Because usually your stuff is quite nice. Those brackets are a total bodge. Look at the screw heads standing proud on them for one. Never mind the fact that aesthetically they are awful, you’re going to catch the album sleeves on them and cause damage. Please tell me you used them to see what people would say? Also have you noticed how much the speed square moves when using it to guide the router? Can’t be great for your accuracy. Keep up the good work, I’m a fan. But those bodger-brackets are beneath you.
@RagnBoneBrown
@RagnBoneBrown 6 жыл бұрын
What are you suggesting would be an improvement for the joinery then? Dowels would not adhere well to the inside of chipboard, hence why I didn’t use them. Biscuits are useless. I don’t have a domino. Screws through the top would look rubbish obviously. Glue wouldn’t be strong enough on its own especially if someone lifts it from the top. That’s why I chose brackets and screws to add strength. So come on, what would you do? Theres about 40mm gap between the top of the records and the brackets so no chance of them catching! If you were truly a fan of the channel, your comment would be less offensive and rude, and more constructive criticism.
@CerberusVelvet
