Experienced winemaker here, I'd like to add some tips: -Unless your making a sweet wine, forget about the sorbate. It adds a sweetness and a "kit taste" to a dry wine. If you ferment your wine "dry" the yeast have nothing to eat and as long as you sulfate the wine it will be ok. - Look into Star San, its a no rinse sanitizer that kills bacteria thru a low PH. I love the stuff and its alot easier to use. - If you really want to ramp up your wine quality- look into "extended maceration". Tim Vandergrift has great You Tube videos on it. You basically let it sit on the skins for 6-10 weeks after primary fermentation is done. I do it on all my kits now and the differance is incredible. Really enjoyed your video.

B & C Paranormal excellent info ! I’m just starting my first batch of wine . I’ve brewed beer for years and wondered if I could use my .Star San in winemaking.

As for how to get all the grape skins out, after you position the bag in the muslin, make a small cut in the top of the bag. That way, you prevent a vacuum from forming, and you can get all the skins out.
@BEERNBBQBYLARRY7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree about the wine skins. I've made red wine both from juice and whole grapes. The juice only wines lacked flavor, color, and body while my wines from grapes have all been great. I didn't know kits existed with skins. I may have to give this a try.

I have a tip for the skins. I sanitize a 5 g paint strainer bag. They're made of polyester and are much easier to put the skins into.
@tonyportony58695 жыл бұрын
Great video....thank you. The sulfite is a yeasts' worse enemy in the beginning. Why don't you use Starsan for sanitizing? It is no rinse too. Thank you
@winnguyen4434 жыл бұрын
Hey Tony, just starting out making wine. Ive got years of all grain brewing experience. I use Star San all the time. Do you use it in Winemaking?
@FatCigarMafia3 жыл бұрын
@@winnguyen443 star San works great for sanitizing your wine equipment. Its foamy though so either let it air dry or rinse it clean after sufficient contact time. People may yell at me for rinsing the star san. But I always allow enough contact time and rinse with good clean water I know doesn't have germs in it. I've never had bad results with my rinse method and will continue to do it.

is it recommended to use the fastferment for these premium kits with the oaks and skins? I assume it is more difficult to use with the need to press the muslin bag every day.

Joe, you should do some mead. I’m currently drinking some I started in February. I let it age for almost a year. It is really good, granted, I had to water it down a little because of how hot it is(25% ABV), but after that watering down, it is even better. Also, made from scratch.

LRB, Hello, I bought all of my things to make wine in ebay. I kept looking for the best prices before I bought anything and all in all it really didn't cost that much. This is what I bought to get started. An 8 gal fermenter bucket with bung hole for the bubbler you will buy, large long handled spoon, hydrometer (I sanitize mine and float it right in the bucket) 6gal glass carboy (never degas in this, mine started cracking so I only use it for wine to set in) I also bought a 2 handed corker, A large funnel does come I handy sometimes too. There are other things you can get but that should get you started at way under the $200.00 you mentioned. Keep it cheap and fun and its very enjoyable and fun to do, There are tons of videos to gain knowledge in this hobby/craft. I wish you the best of luck !

I think Joe has slowed down or possibly stopped making vids altogether to focus on wife, job, and life or something lol. I always look forward to his Halloween videos but he hasn't done them in a couple of years. I see many youtubers stopping and questioning whether its worth it to invest the time to create content when KZbin continues to make it less worth from the monetizing side. I do videos because I enjoy making them but have struggled as well since I've had a kid, moved, and have so many other things going on. Its always in the back of my mind reminding me to get in front of the camera, tho....
