11:38 Kevin, you said that if you the first knot that goes in the water won’t have any pull on the rope. This would be true if there was nothing tied to the end of the rope. This is why they would tie a log to the end of the rope. They would then count the amount of knots that slipped through their hands. This then had to be recorded in a book. Because there was a log tied to the rope, this book was called “The Log Book”.

HONEST best parent to parent advice, put spare cloths in the diaper bag for mom and dad not JUST the baby. a blowout diaper means everything gets shit on it. my kid had a blowout on the way to visit my sister and her boyfriend came home an hour after we thought we had all cleaned up and had poop on him as well.

The word Knots refers to Nautical Miles per hour. 1 Nautical Mile is equal to 1.151 Statue Miles. The reason ships and airplanes use Knots for speed is because it's a division equal to a minute of arc (1/60 of a degree) of latitude at the equator, aiding in chart navigation. Measuring Knots historically was done by throwing a sea anchor into the water and counting the number of equidistant knots tied into the rope, as they pass through the hand.

yeah good luck 🍀 on your 🚢 boat peter 😁👍🏼 don't forget backup trolling motors with solar or wind generated power to storage for reducing fuel ⛽ costs though you'll still need the full power option basically it'd be electric ⚡💡 assisted propulsion and i did like your vid on direct wind to water drive model ❤ not as useful into wind except anchoring to hold position but still highly valuable for directional choice propulsion just have to minimize drag forces in the unwanted direction or use the drag forces to pull you even further in the desired direction ❤❤ also hi William potato ,&everyone👍🏼

The global temp raise thing he was talking about was due to the dirty fuel from the ships seeding clouds. Boats would leave literal clouds behind them and that would reflect sunlight. I think the change they made was regulations to make fuel cleaner, and there was a drastic raise in temperature over the ocean after the switch to greener fuel, and if I recall they didn’t know the cause for a few years after the change. They only recently figured out the cloud seeding as the cause. Basically, they pumped greenhouse gasses into the air, but our prediction of how much warming affect that had was way off because we didn’t account for the seeded clouds, and now that the clouds are gone, we are suffering the consequences of our past actions.

All that the discussion of boat fuel consumption did was make me even ***more*** certain that if I ever got into something more than lake boating, it would be with a sailboat. My grandfather always stuck his nose up at "stinkpots" as he called motor boats, even though even he was willing to use an outboard for in and around the marina.

The knots term came about because you would tie a log to the end of a rope and measure out how many knots slid from your hand as you went through the water and was meant to be relative speed in relation to water. This is why ship's have a log book. Because you would record your speed in it. Knots in the log book. With the log at the end of the rope. Denoting the name log book.
@ska042
@ska042 Жыл бұрын
Aside from the term's origin, the unit of measurement used for long distances is nautical miles, and a knot is a nautical mile per hour, makes sense to want speed and distance measurements to fit together.

What about a sail boat, but the sail is not a sail but a large vertical mounted solar array you rotate and angle towards the sun So instead of pulling a 15 meters x 15meters barge of panels behind you, you have a 15x15 meter vertical solar array. The hard thing would be making the panel array light enough to be mounted that way without messing up the boat CG And the panels kind need to tilt on the sail for the situation where the sunlight is directly overhead.

ok hydrofoil nerd here there are partial hydrofoils most of em have a surface piercing foil in front and it basically just wheelies the entire boat and usses the butt of the boat as a pivot point, most hydrofoil boats had aluminum hulls like the uss tucumcari, cause weight really affects hydrofoil performance, so they arent good for cargo or heavy freight. it makes the thing less boaty and more planey. and look up the uss tucumcari it folds the foils up for docking and i cant image the type of bearings those things used, it also crashed into a reef and that was the end of it. it used a tuboshaft engine to run a water jet pump and the bottom of the rear hydrofoils had 2 water intakes to draw in water, it looks like a nightmare of enginnering to have a water intake in a system that has to hold the boat and that has to fold like 70 degrees, the pegasus one has the same system but the back foils are conected into one big wing that pivots backwards and put of the water behind the boat, these boats were also pretty much immune to underwater mines as the hull was outside the water and the foils were super strong. the pegasus turbed by pivoting the entire front foil i think the tucumcari was the same but i havent come up with direct evidence for it. last thing the pegasus still has the fastest crossing of the panama channel to this day

Got it backwards boys. Going at hull speed is super inefficient. There are two types of hulls, displacement and non-displacement. Displacement hulls have a hull speed, and it gets exponentially harder to go faster as you approach it. You can’t go past it (maybe a little). Non-displacement hulls is when you plane and then you dont have a max speed.

the ship fuel global cooling thing you referred to was that ship fuel is now limited it how much sulfur it can contain because the sulfur compounds generated greatly contribute to acid rain and the acidification of the oceans. Well, those sulfur compounds also acted as cloud seeds and MASSIVE con-trail-like clouds would form behind boats using those high-sulfur fuels. Those clouds were so massive that they could literally be seen from space. They were also so massive that they acted like a safety blanket and reflected an absurd amount of light/energy and contributed multiple degrees of global cooling, covering up exactly how much we're fucking the environment. afaik, that pattern of heating hasn't slowed down and is still ongoing source: Hank Green did a video on it.

The thing about electric vehicles that people don't realize is battery economics. The electric motors are very robust, the electronics are robust and reliable. But the battery capacity and energy density, and reliability are the sticking points. 50% of the value of vehicles are in the battery, and the battery will degrade regardless of how you treat the battery. Only now are people realizing the long term economic disadvantage of the big capacity electric vehicles. No one wants to buy a 10yr old electric which needs a new battery that costs more than 50% of the car's value. On top of that the manufacturer won't sell you the new battery and is anti-consumer. Which basically means, big capacity battery cars will become the new e-waste.
