Stumbled across this whilst trying to work out how hard it would be to make a titanium chip fork (Us Brits love a trip to the chippy!) as I think adding it to my edc would be nice. This is a great piece and shows that it is workable at home without a vast array of machinery. Thanks!
@LetsPrepTogether
@LetsPrepTogether 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! I would love to see what you come up with! Id imagine for a fork you would want to try some thiner sheet titanium (maybe 2mm/2,5mm) and try some bending. For the fork tines an angle grinder could be used as well as for the general shaping.

Fragments a british chip fork is pretty much a 2 pronged marking knife! It’s dead flat but and has the shape of a magnum ice cream stick but with 2 prongs on the end. They are usually made of wood and thrown away. Yes 2mm or so would be better for a thickness so I’ll see what I can source.

@@reithryll 👍 yep now i know what you mean. We use the same over here for chips/fries. If you can't source titanium for it you might find stainless which would also be cool.

@@LetsPrepTogether I deal with titanium every day, I recommend you try BT22 titanium alloy, this is a Russian grade, and our grade in China is TC18 titanium alloy, a high-strength titanium alloy.
@wilsonwang2865

@@LetsPrepTogether Compared with stainless steel, the hardness of titanium is relatively soft. The hardness of industrial pure titanium is generally less than 120 (Brinell), and the hardness of other industrial pure titanium is 200-295 (Brinell). The hardness of pure titanium castings is 200-220 (Brinell). The hardness value of titanium alloy in annealed condition is 32-38 (Rockwell C calibration), which is equivalent to 298-349 Brinell hardness. Therefore, it is often necessary to improve the surface hardness of titanium. The purpose of surface hardening of titanium is to improve wear resistance and eliminate the risk of adhesion of parts operating under friction conditions. While the hardness is increased, the corrosion resistance and fatigue strength are also improved. Here, the primary emphasis is on the improvement of surface hardness, and the technology itself and its influence on the improvement of surface hardness. Titanium will react with oxygen, nitrogen and other gases at high temperature to cause hardening. Nitriding treatment is carried out at high temperature (800-900 degrees) to make the surface Vickers hardness up to 700 or more; after surfacing welding, it is added in argon. Appropriate nitrogen or oxygen can increase the surface hardness by 2-3 times; after ion plating, a layer of titanium nitride is formed on the surface, with a thickness of about 5 microns, and the surface Vickers hardness is as high as 16000-20000. The wear resistance of titanium is relatively poor. If the surface is nitrided, it can form a very hard nitrided layer, which can increase the strength of the titanium plate. The surface nitriding methods include atmospheric gas nitriding, negative pressure nitriding and Ion nitriding, because ion nitriding takes a short time, the deformation of the workpiece is small, the plasticity is good, the energy consumption is low, and the environmental pollution is low. Ion nitriding is usually carried out in a nitriding furnace, and it is difficult to complete the usual container materials. In fact, it is most used This is the nitriding of the sealing surface of the titanium valve. During nitriding, the workpiece is the cathode in the furnace and the furnace wall is the anode. After pre-evacuating, add nitrogen or hydrogen, etc., adhere to a certain degree of vacuum, apply direct current, and increase The high voltage makes the ammonia-containing gas glow discharge, and its appearance constitutes a glow. Nitrogen and hydrogen bombard the workpiece at high speed under the effect of the electric field, and the kinetic energy is converted into heat energy for about 2-5 hours.
