After the trees have been harvested, the process of turning them into a pole begins. The poles are run through a peeler, which removes the outer layer of bark from the tree. The bark is reused as fuel for boilers throughout the plant. After peeling, the poles goes to our classing station where it is measured and cut for class and length according to ANSI standards. Poles are categorized by size and class. The size is determined by the length of the pole and the class is determined by the diameter in certain areas of the pole.
Once the poles have been peeled, classed and sorted, they are ready to go into the dry kiln. The poles are loaded onto a large tram with stacking strips in between each layer to ensure proper drying. The kiln is heated to temperatures in excess of 200 degrees for 2-6 days. The kiln removes removes excess moisture in the wood to ensure proper penetration and retention of preservatives. After the poles are done in the kiln, they are sent to be framed and branded.
