On this episode of Make It Kustom, I am working on a 1931 Model A Roadster. With our new engine and transmission in place, its time to build a firewall that suits the car and fits the engine. Since the build is largely inspired by the 1939 Zephyr in the shop, we are again looking for inspiration.

I always appreciate your videos, even though I'm now in my 80s and will not likely get to put these lessons to use. At the same time I have experience I can share with the viewers who "may" apply your methods. I did years of fiberglass molding and finishing and can say without doubt that you'd be better off using a shop vacuum to inhale the dust, rather than using the air hose to fill the shop with it so you can inhale it in the long run. Paper masks let too much of it into your nose to be much protection. It also get into "everything" in the room. I know mdf is not as bad as glass fibers, but your lungs and the surrounding tools, materials and projects don't care about the differences. I used to wrap my vacuum's filter with a couple layers of paper towel, taped with painters tape, so I could roll it up and dis card it. I also doesn't hurt to hit the covered filter with a spray bottle of water before you run it. Gets the first dust to coat the surface and hold more of it there to be tossed when you finish.

Perfect timing Karl, I'm close to having heat in my little three stall and expect to remove the current stepped firewall out of mt 67 C-10 and replacing it with something like what you are showing in this video. Thank you for the direction. T-Dub

Very cool! I used what I learned from that other hammer forming video you put out a while back to make the entire bed floor and wheel tubs on my 1974 FJ40 I'm currently restoring. It's all exposed metal no carpet on that truck so it had to be nicely formed. It worked awesome. Those bucks were huge for that project. I gave a little shout out to you in one of those videos I made on that project, because the how to you gave was very good. I still have to make the cab floor yet this winter. I like your idea of counter sunk screws Im going to give that a go I think. Its also cheaper than all the nuts, bolts and washers.

On those outside curves creating the wrinkles with extra material, why not take a few tiny pie cuts out and weld them back together once formed?

Use a rosebud on your torch to heat metal, it will heat a more uniform area than a cutting tip.

Happy birthday to your dad! I've often said that a man can fool me for years, but give me 5 minutes with his wife and kids and I'll know what kind of man he really is. It's not an exact science, but you've always left me with the impression that you were raised by a good man. I hope he had a great birthday, with many more to come.

The first time I saw wood working was needed for metal working I knew I was in over my head. So I bought a router and scroll saw. Man you make it look easy, I wish it was. But it can be done if someone is determined and patient! Awesome work!

Thank you Karl great Job! MDF is good flat surface to use. I noticed you don't really use a Rosebud with the torch I guess it's less changing of the torch head? About flying! Keep you feet on the ground brother, unless you do that all the time it never turns out good for part timers. Happy Birthday Roy! You guy's be safe!

Use keyway stock for small reference guides. You’ll have adaptable (cut to length as needed) sticks to uuse for guides or assembly fixtures. Also available are the brass tubes found in hobby shops for round guides or small bushings.

Happy birthday Roy Just a suggestion for some of the hole positions. Use the spots that would be used for the grill cowl support rod brackets and brake booster mounting holes and any other item that would be bolted to the firewall. Because those holes will remain and a small pilot in those places will save time later. Loving your work Karl.

I just finished making a formed panel for behind the back seat of my 73 Firebird. Made a buck from 1/4" steel plate, laser cut to the exact dimension I wanted. Used my pneumatic hammer with a rounded off end on the tool. Worked sweet! A little practice on some scraps of material. Had to move the hammer quickly so it didn't make deep depressions in local spots. Only took a few minutes.

I love your videos, I come away with knowledge I can apply to my projects without having to buy $thousands in tools. Happy birthday to your dad! Re, Mark Wagner saying he's not intelligent. Your honor, I object. The witness is extremely intelligent. Seeing his way through the project and setting himself up to glide through it is more intelligence than many "smart" people have. It's not about books and school degrees. Re heating corners, would induction heating work? Those induction heaters for bolts might work. Heats locally quickly with less fire. Not super cheap though .

I really like the custom oval chunky die you have to back up the hammer. It reminds me of squeezing rivets; the dies are flat and pretty much useless for the pneumatic squeezer. But if you round off the edges and build a dome; then you can have a nice concave squeeze resulting in a nice smooth surface to play with. Tell your pop happy b day!

You would want a skid plate like a sewing machine for your hammer tool I guess. Or something that runs in a guide that will magnetically or mechanically clamp to your material, like a plunge saw rail would work for straight lines but something like a router jig for curves. Just spitballing.
