Land rover stopped using white rtv silicone at the factory and started using black rtv silicone and halved the amount they used... Apparently white rtv silicone is sealing up half the bathrooms in solihull! With a steel back plate we used to make an oil drip feed for the splines. Never done it with the ali plate though.

The drilled gears are pretty cheap now - I think a genuine gear was £25! But back in the day I used to drill them with a masonry bit!

Love it, subscribed, could listen all day (I am in fact). Here's an idea, have you considered DIY cross drilling the input gear shaft???? Only (thicker?)thought is if there was a hardening process required afterwards, or if the factory cross drilled type have different machining )

You cannot buy the early gears pre drilled, so we drill the holes using a masonry bit running very slowly with lots of oil - - takes ages but works

Thanks, settled down to this after the Archers, making Sunday nights better!! Two things what difference would the petrol or diesel engine make to the wear on the input gear? All my failures of the LT230 have been the 30mm large rear output nut working loose through the splines wearing out, could this be through the strain of towing often, the front output never wears?

I did this to my Disco converting it to manual from auto and EDC 300TDI 😥

Dunno nothing here, but the brake shoes were installed 90° CCW to how they were originally fitted(ie. when they came off). I guess it didn't make any difference or is that because the actual linkage type assembly is different to the cabled type?

Great Channel! Planning on fitting an Auto to my 300tdi Defender using Disco parts which i have apart from the Gearbox. Do you have a video about setting up the flex plate distance on the crank to get the correct spacing to the torque converter. As i believe getting this wrong can scrap the oil pump drive inside the gearbox by pulling it to far forwards or forcing it to far backwards?
@BritannicaRestorations

Anthony - I am going to rain on your parade - it can be done, but the conversion is awful - it is so disappointing There is not enough power in the 300 Tdi to make this effective I have done 2 and will never do another - on the second we put a 1:44 transfer case on the auto - it was better but the mpg was bad You need a V8 to pull the auto box Mike

@@BritannicaRestorations Hi Mike, Thanks for the advice, i think its a marmite conversion without a doubt. Yes its already a bit of a slug as its a 'snatch' Land rover 110, at 3.2 tons so not to worried about outright speed. The Military built a version called the 'Vixen Plus' which was an automatic gearbox and 2.8,of which I'm building a replica of thus the auto conversion. I'm definitely going to use the 1.4:1 transfer box, and the Tdi will have a mild tune for a while, with a boost pin, before hopefully receiving a 2.8 bottom end and a VNT turbo, Its already running an alisport rad to keep it cool. Just concerned to not damage the gearbox oil pump by getting the flex plate position incorrect.

Perhaps you can see why I am working on the GM V6 (small block Chevy) as a solution to cheap stock engines and reliability - when I sent the ECU to be reprogrammed the guy will set it to a lot more power than stock - I am almost there! The problem with diesels is the cost - you could get a few more MPG, but the cost is high and that payback is long - wonder if you could use a modern 6 or 8 speed auto? Lot better MPG as the shifting is not so wide as the 4 speed

Hi Mike, do you have a video of a Discover R380 conversion into a Defender please, my Defender sounds like it has a Budgie trapped occasionally whilst in 5th gear, I can get a Discovery R380 off a pal but want to keep the original Defender gear stick, hope you can help

I see these are out of stock at the moment but try one of these - www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/diy-rebuild-kits/r380-rebuild-kits/selector-rail-adapter-yolk.html You need a Defender remote but you do not have to strip the box

Hi, i had that sound too, turned out to be the slipper pads on the selector forks, only know this as they dropped off and left me unable to change gear as 5th was still engaged, but you dont find that out until you lift the clutch, i left some lovely marks on the M6 in Warrington on an off ramp....and other places, not fun

Hi Mike, does no one use Hylomar any more. We used it a lot on armoured vehicles.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
I think Hylomar was used in conjunction with a gasket and the RTV silicon (Hylosyl) does not need a gasket (saves money and flexes )

The LT230Q manual calls for Hylosil 2000 for main case to bearing housing and Hylosil RTV 102 for the PTO cover. Anyone know what the modern equivalent to these are? I'm not sure they still sell them under these numbers?

Thanks Mike, sounds good to me. Apparently you can still get it but it's not as readily available (part numbers F/HG2000H/050M and F/SL102HY/085g). I have 100 to hand so I'll be using that :-)

Is this the transfer case that has a viscous coupling? And why disable the solenoid on the top? Just curious. I had thought about swapping a LR powertrain into my 48 Willys at one point, specifically to get the viscous coupling.
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 5 жыл бұрын
No that was a Borg Warner transfer with the viscous coupling The interlock was removed as this was fitted to an auto box before

@@BritannicaRestorations What did the interlock do? Apologies for all the questions, I work mainly with vintage Willys Jeeps, but I've always loved the Defenders too. I just don't know much about them aside from what I'm learning from you. And thanks for the videos! I am learning a great deal from you.

Right latitude wrong side of the Pennines. Oh dear! I've lived too long in the London area (since 1947). Often visit the North East though as my wife's folk come from Hartlepool. I have been thoroughly enjoying your videos and am beginning to want to get my moribund '57 88 back into use. It has been parked for 3 years now. A shocking admission! Edgar

That is depressing for a 77 year old! It's worse when I see all those modern tools you use and compare them with the bike spanners I have been using over the years. They worked then so I suppose they'll do again - if I can build up the enthusiasm. I think it will be a lot easier just to watch someone else enjoying themselves. The fortunate bit is that I have very little modern stuff. Electronic ignition and fuel pump is all! I'm off to dream. Best wishes to you and thanks for the videos. Edgar
