Making an RC Aston Martin DB4 GT Part 2: RC Body Vacuum Forming

Part 2 how I make an Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato body for my Tamiya M-06 RC chassis. I'm using 0.8mm Polycarbonate sheets (tradeware names of Polycarbonate sheets are e.g. "Makrolon" or "Lexan"). Here it is Makrolon.
Polycarbonate must be pre-dried before vacuum forming. I'm doing this for 1h at 100°C. Then I take the sheet out of the oven, heat the oven to 200-210°C and put the sheet back in for approx 1 min until it sags for approx. 4-5 cm in the middle. Then I place it over the mold with the vacuum already running. I'm also warming the mold a little before with a heat gun.

Fantastic video, and it now makes sense to me why it is made into pieces like that. Can you tell me why there is cloth tape on those corners when you pulled this from the mold?

Because I used a heat gun in addition for difficult areas (ehilst the vacuum was still running), at some point it was too much, and a small hole was in the sheet (luckily "outside" the body. But I wanted to continue to form a concave area with the heat gun so I had to fix it with some tape to remain a vacuum

Very nice! I always enjoy seeing your results, but it is the process that amazes me the most! I actually finally managed to order myself a 600x400 Euro box, so I can begin to plan a vacuum table, hopefully for this summer, then probably just need to get the rest from a local hardware store, and of course the PC, I also have a place I order plastics, I think they have... I think I want to make a version of a Tamiya Sand Viper, should be a fairly easy one to start with...

Awesome! Do you split the body into 3 major components after spraying it?

The mold is made out of 3 pieces right from the start. Otherwise I wouldn't get it out of the body after vacuum forming. In part 1 you see how the mold was made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpeynql7qrGcjpY
