The misconception about birds is they are SUPPOSED to eat seeds as their primary diet!! This is far from the case and in fact seeds as a full meal are extremely unhealthy for your birds. Find out more by following the links below. Not only is the Bird Tricks cookbook a great resource for fun options to feed your bird, it is insightful and very thoughtfully written.

I ADORE the BirdTricks books!! I had to order hard copy cause they’re just so beautiful! Also I found at Walmart there is boxes of pasta made from different veggies only and other healthier things like garbanzo beans etc I love to get for my birds. For a long time we only had our jenday so we bought ice cube trays to freeze his chop in and store in gallon freezer bags, then at night I take one cube out and put in bowl and it’s thawed in fridge by morning for my husband to give him since I work super early. We got bigger cube trays when we adopted our cockatoo but we are still trying to get her to like chop🤦🏽‍♀️ so far she only likes large chopped veggies

I do the Bird tricks recipes also for my budgie. The difference is I don't premix the cooked foods with the fresh chopped veg. She wants the veg's still fresh and crunchy. I don't have to make nearly as much so I make the cooked part and then the fresh every four days or so. Freeze and these the cooked and refrigerate the fresh. Then mix per meal. If I add to my flock I'll have to change it but it works for me right now and helps my budgie baby eat the way she should.

Thanks for the great video! This week, I purchased the cook books after having a consultation about my Amazon Lucy who has developed a screaming habit... It took me 3 hours to make the summer recipe but it was kinda fun since there were so many ingredients. Is your video the spring recipe? Summer has beets in it and now everything is a red/pinkish color. Not sure if that was the desired effect! My hands were red afterwards too, that stuff sure stains! Anyway, I was wondering if you could give me some advice about how you changed your birds over to this? I tried giving a portion to Lucy yesterday morning and at first she ate it, but then she stopped because I think she was waiting for her dry food. Today, she would not touch the chop. Any advice on how to change her to a healthier diet would be very appreciated!!
@bestflockingfriends
@bestflockingfriends 4 жыл бұрын
So it’s probably not recommended but I went cold turkey with cookie and Sam. They all love it and have adjusted very well. I would try mixing it in something Lucy DOES like such as banana or sweet potato, or include some small seeds so she has to dig them out. She will get the taste of it as she forages. If she likes the pellets you can use some leftover pellet powder and mix that with some chop as well! Get creative :) and stop with the seed. My birds screamed for it bc they knew I’d give it to them!! You have to be smarter 😅
@bestflockingfriends

Sorry I’m at the dentist and they needed me to get off my phone 😂 yes the beets will stain!! That’s ok though, my birds don’t seem to mind it. The cookbook recommends draining them - I found it works well to put paper towels in the bottom of the strainer and then more on top of the beets and press hard because they drained WAY more after the chop was fully made, frozen and defrosted. Soooo much liquid!

Very important question that I rly hope u see. If the natural feeding system has everything the bird needs then do u have to feed the pellets as well? Can I just feed the natural feeding system?

I’ve seen videos where the parrot chop is for the morning and the pallet is for the night. ( it can switch)Sorta like the pallet food is something they always have in their cage like a base diet.
@bestflockingfriends
@bestflockingfriends 4 жыл бұрын
Marisol got it! Unfortunately there is no single feeding option that provides 100% of the nutrients your bird needs for an optimal diet. It's recommended you feed a chop (veggie/legume/grain) diet along side a cold-pressed pellet diet. I've seen a lot of chop diets out there, and we chose BirdTricks because we've been incredibly happy with their products and the research they've done to support all of their teachings. That being said, we've also ordered some freeze dried chop as emergency backup - but I'm curious to try it in place of our current chop! Sorry - to answer your question you can feed your birds whatever you want - chop only. However you may start to see some issues with your bird's health. Pellets may seem expensive but you don't have to serve cupfulls. Birds the size of macaws may only eat 7-10 pellets each evening! You can also start small and grind 4/5 pellets up and mix them into your bird's chop and feed chop twice daily. That way you're covering your bases with minimal waste.
@archiesflock7517
@archiesflock7517 3 жыл бұрын
Well - the chop isn’t the only thing you should feed them as they won’t get enough fats - I personally don’t feed pellets - I feed an organic, home-made seed mix with chia, sesame, hemp, flax, pumpkin etc. But yes - I would feed chop in the morning and some pellets/other food in the evening/midday - also make sure you provide big chunks of veggies and treats hidden in toys/training

I do it this way becausw leaving the chopped up vegetables overnight makes me worry it starts getting foul and spoioed by the morning and ants or fruitflies are all over them. Chop in the morning, and pellet in the evening.

It’s just to much taking them seeds out of fruit and veggies when the seeds contain high amount of nutrients are antibacterial and antifungal. Find one bird one bird in the wild who eats beans baked pasta or just even sunflower seeds. Those seeds in the veggies and fruit are crucial along with flowers and bark. Store bought alfalfa sprouts out the door. Just like Dr. Harrisons says never feed your bird beans.

Question... does it matter if you use the seasoning packet that comes with the beans soup?
@bestflockingfriends
@bestflockingfriends 3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is AVOID added salt and sugar, but many other “spices” are appropriate. Because you don’t know what is in the spice packet (or where it came from) I’d skip the packet, but add your own if you like! Cayenne pepper is a good one! Always season in moderation and be sure to look up what may be harmful to parrots before adding :)

Seeds are a great treat! Unfortunately they're extremely high in fat and difficult for your parrot to digest. They can shorten your parrot's life span and reduce their quality of life. Wouldn't you eat pizza at every meal if you could? Sure! The fatty foods are very tasty but sadly very unhealthy. We use pine nuts and sunflower seeds as rewards when training our parrots which makes them value those treats more, because they're not receiving them as often.

is your chop soft and mushy after defrosting overnight for the following days feeding?

Sometimes yes. If you’re over cooking the beans this can happen, they get mushy and turn the veggies into slop. Also over chopping the veggies into a purée can contribute to this.
