We live in Western Pa. and Have around 100 Acres of Land, About 1/2 is ours the rest is my moms, We have 4 kids and two grandchildren, 3 Golden Retrievers and one Cat. We enjoy working on our property and making improvements. We sell firewood and soon will be selling hardwood lumber.

Good morning! We got a little wet snow and slush in northern Indiana Co. The wind was bad. It took out a lot of dead trees and branches. Power outages as a result. Good luck with all of the brush and stumps.

Hello! 🙂 When burning brush it is good to have a dozer and a trackhoe available. The dozer pushes the pile together and the trackhoe piles it high. If the dozer has a root rake on it, that is even better. Burning wet brush is always a challenge but can be done if a small nucleus of hot fire can be established. It is all about heat.

That pile went quick! It is evident that the fire does need bigger wood to consume all the stumps. It's great the weather is cooperating, that sure makes the work go easier. I hadn't considered the firewood shed when I saw the bunker almost full yesterday. You have to refill that too. So not as close to being firewood full yet, which is great, more video time! As I sit here, i can think of a half dozen projects you have coming which is great too. I eagerly await your next post and thanks for this video, w drone shots too! 👍🚜❤🇺🇸🇺🇸

$10 of fuel or $40k for a mulcher head- burning is pretty cheap and effective.

I would like to make a suggestion about removing dirt from root clusters. I have no proof that it will work, but here goes. When you go to get clinging dirt off the root ball, try setting one stump dirt side down and butt side up. Drop another root ball onto the butt end and I believe that would allow more dirt to fall off than when the whole rootball hits the ground at once. Also. when you push over a tree with your equipment, you cut the tree at the butt and into log sections, and you haul the log off to the log pile. Try instead, dropping the rootball stump onto the log before you haul it away. It should get more dirt off because it hits on a concentrated point and not the broad ground. Just a friendly suggestion, I hope it works, you have the equipment and I don't. Really looking forward to your work projects, nice diversification.

The only problem with dropping the root ball on the log is that it grinds dirt into the log. This becomes problematic when you want to cut the log into pieces for firewood or lumber because dirt will take the sharpness out of cutting equipment. I do like your idea of dropping one root ball onto another though. If the dirt is dry it can be dislodged from the root ball so scatter the stumps out with the root ball facing roots up and let them dry out before trying to get the dirt off.

Your clear and split wood method on your PA property got me to thinking. Would it be worthwhile to make another side road, clear a large spot and pour another pad on the WV property (when they do the cabin pour)? You could clear trees , cut lumber, split firewood (out of the extra pad clearing and deadfall trees) and build an as you go combo timber frame workshop and equipment storage space. It would eliminate the need for a second (down the road) pad pour and it gives you an area for stacking/storing future saw and split logs and ready to use firewood.

I didn't think it would get started but you got it. I had one I had to leave set several months longer to dry out more(green tops). The next time I tried it started right up. Don't know why but it is so satisfying near the end taking all of the outer brush and restacking in the middle. I guess because It looks better and I know I am almost done.

When I lived in the B.W.I on the island of Grand Cayman we would take down some trees that were green and burn them to clear the area. Because of the altitude being zero or sea level there was a lot of oxygen in the air, so the fires burned fast and completely. By the next day there was nothing left, not even charcoal just ash. Great video Mike thumbs up.

A forester guy who surveyed and marked cull treess in our woods told us to leave 2.5-3" limbs and down for bunny huts and to eventually rot down to provide nutrients. Granted, we aren't looking to make space, more to help promote a healthy forest that was last logged in the 30s. Has anyone else heard similar?

As a logger- we do leave small brush piles for wildlife habit if that’s what landowners want.

@@bioniclife - Limbs take a long time to decompose. Your light logging slash decomposes faster especially, leaves, needles, and small branches. Mulching can help as long as the mulch layer is very thin.

Good morning Mike, Looks like progress. Surprised not to see any of the Morgans with you. Must all be busy. I never could sharpen a chain like you did. I was shown by an older logger to set behind the saw on a log and do it. He would change hands on each side. Right hand on left side and left hand on right side. Oregon use to make a small vise you stuck into the log and clamp your bar to it. Made things super sturdy and easier to sharpen. Have a good day, Ron

When I worked on the pipeline years ago in northern British Columbia, Canada, we would burn huge piles of not only brush but large popular and spruce and fir,all the mills had closed and there was no market for it, we would pile brush and tops on the bottom and pile all the big wood on top like you were loading a trailer, the natives were in charge of burning, they would go cut a dead spruce blow down and split it up big and small, then they would cut an opening in the outside to get access to the brush inside, with a piece of paper towel and a match they would have that pile burning in no time, and in the morning there was almost nothing left of a pile the size of a two story house

Just an ideal! On those stumps. Take the wood spliter on excavator and split the top of stump a couple times. My thinking is more air surface to flame. Heat, fuel and oxygen.

If there are some small brush piles here and there, the rabbits and other smaller animals have a place to live and be safe from the coyotes. We have only a fraction of the rabbits we used to in the NC mountains because of the coyotes.

I use old fuel oil and the old filter to start mine up. I do my own furnace maintenance so save the bled off fuel and the old filters. They work well. I need to try my leaf blower to see how that works.

A drip torch uses 60% Diesel / 40% gasoline. Would that work in the pump sprayer?

Drip torches are designed for use with fire. Plastic spray bottles are not. There is no way I would add drip torch fuel to a plastic spray bottle. We have always used 60% diesel to 40% Gasoline if temperatures are above 75 degrees if it’s below 75 degrees we use 50% diesel to 50% gasoline in our drip torches.

If you dig a pit, a small pit, you would hold so much heat that it's actually the secret of burning those brush piles. When done just push dirt back in and smooth over.

Does Kubota make a an inline hydraulic cooler with electric fan that could mount on the boom and hook up with quick couplers, to cool the hydraulic fluid of a couple of those lines before it gets back to the main reservoir , when you are doing hot work?

Most excavators have hydraulic coolers built into the system so no need for redundancy. All oil returns to the reservoir after passing thru a cooling radiator.

A wheat straw bale with a gallon or 2 of diesel soak in makes a good wick to have brush fire starter. It will keep the fire going. Nice video. Have a great day be safe.

I've watched quite a few KZbin channels where burning seems to be the preferred method of getting rid of brush and stumps. Why don't more people use mulching machines? All that wood gets returned to the soil instead of wasted. Just one of my pet peeves watching land clearing.

Mike, why don’t you use an old tire to burn your brush. One old tire and about a gallon of diesel with a rag in the fuel to act as wick will start your fire fast and burn very hot. Little bit of black smoke initially but disappears fast…,,

I just love a fire. I could set and listen to a fire cracking for hrs. We are 2&1/2 days now without power. You can’t believe how many people are complaining on social media. Crews have been working day and night trying to restore power. It is a total disaster around here with trees taking out power lines. The whole county is a mess.
