Making Channeled Back Seat Cushion - Professional Tips and Tutorial for All Levels

Most back cushions are channel backed and often all that needs to be done is a little filler to give them a nice new and plump look. In this case, I needed to make new covers, restuff them with the original filler and then add new filler to the cushions to give them new life. My friends were really pleased with the back cushions.
I have been in the upholstery and interior decorating business for 30 years, as well as teaching these subjects both privately and in colleges. I have drawn on my years of teaching to put this video together and hope to have answered all your questions.

Thanks for this video - I've struggled to find any resources about sewing channelled cushions despite most of the cushions I've seen on shop bought couches being done in this way.

Is muslin the best fabric for replacement? The original fabric is some sort of non- woven thin liner or interfacing.

Thank you for the question. I do use either muslin/plain calico or cheap curtain lining whichever I have in hand. They are only seen when the covers are taken off to be washed or when new stuffing needs to be added. I hope this help, good luck with your project.

How can you determine how much batting/filler to stuff inside the channels?

Thank you for the question. I fill each channel until I like the firmness and each channel feels equally dense. The nice thing is you can always add more filler at a later date, as and when they get compressed. I usually buy a 10lb/4.5kg box of polyfill when working on large projects or cheap kingsize polyfill pillows if the project isn't too big. Good luck with your project.
