Do you ever take suggestions on new patterns for demascus steele projects? I wonder what a jelly role then twisted wood look like. I know jelly role is hard but it might look cool.
@giggityguy2 жыл бұрын
The sort of spatial reasoning it would take to imagine and predict these patterns is hard to fathom. The fact that techniques can be endlessly recombined means that pattern welding remains an exciting and developing field even after a thousand years

Looking forward to seeing the finished product! Found the voice over & switching between the drawing & the actual metal to be an interesting way to present the video. I'm sure that it shortened the overall length of the video, but enjoyed hearing the description as the different actions were taken with the steel.

First time viewer here. Just found your channel. Love the enthusiasm you have for the craft. I have done basic studies in medieval blacksmithing, which obviously is somewhat different, and am impressed by how you break everything down and explain it very well even on the modern equipment. Very well done! I'll be watching more now.

I gotta say, I love this idea, and you have annihilated the execution. Building that pattern one idea at a time and constructing that aesthetic is something you are very good at. Starting with what you want your pattern to evoke and constructing those elements is my favorite part of making damascus. Its what makes this an art. I am super excited to see how this turns out. The few times I have let an artistic idea take me down a path like this have been some of my favorite smithing experiences.

Have you heard about the recent discovery of 3D printed Damascus? General idea is canister shaped line drawings are printed in regular old PLA to give you cells to fill with metal. Pretty basic canister Damascus from there except for a small vent drilled into it. The PLA reduces to gas and carbon that migrate into the steel at forge weld heat. Massive potential for quickly making all sorts of mosaic elements.

I love the pattern and I wondered what you did with the cut offs then I heard talk about reusing them. It got me thinking . You should make another katana but the traditional style using the cut off Damascus forged randomly for the outer layer and a lower carbon steel for the core. Using power tools in a old style blade design

What do you actually do with the leftovers? Could you try to do some sort of Mosaik patterned knife out of a few different patterned damaskus, could be interesting. For structure you could fold it one or two times so you keep most of the different patterns.

will im a huge fan of yours and have been since you joind alec way back when and theres a project idea i had because of one of your videos. there's a Disney plus show coming out soon based off the percy jackson book series will you honor the percy jackson Fandom with making riptide (Percy's weapon) and backbiter sword version (the main antagonists weapon) from the book series the backbiter will be extremely difficult because it's either half bronze half steel or a demascus bronze/steel which is impossible but your ideas are genius, also im posting a almost exact copy for Alec in hopes that it becomes a challenge to make them from their book descriptions and not the art to see how diffrent they look from one another or how similar

Cool sounding project Will. Any chance you can find footage that would let you show how the steel actually looks like your drawn pattern at each stage? Like going over the final product and explaining THIS part is from the twist. HERE are the 'c's. HERE is the ladder. I also wasn't clear on what pattern would result from taking your Cs and twisting them. Sorry, my mind isn't made for imagining these things :)

Hey Will.... I've always wondered if using different shapes when forging would make more interesting patterns. Sooooo..... You roll the steel, then you square the steel, then you layer the steel...... Most shapes are either square or round that you forge the steel into, what would happen if you had a die that was triangular during the forging process? I know you can make triangles using round and square. But the triangle die intrigues me. Using all three shapes might create something unique.
