A while back I looked at buying cutting fluid because using 3-in-1 oil seemed wasteful and WD40 is expensive. Cutting fluid is pretty cheap but I didn't want to pay for it, so I made some out of vegetable oil, water and detergent to mix the two together. No idea how this compares to the real deal but it is better than air.
Don't think 50/50 is the right ratio, but it is easy enough to invert the bottle and drain off the water from the bottom as the emulsion floats on top of it.

Quite right! Plus, cutting oils are expensive for me, and generally they are not the best for your health either, especially chlorinated versions. But oh well, I guess some people do not consider the health/environmental implications of most brand cutting oils. I find this arrogance quite frustrating, particularly in older machinists who are very attached to their ways; not that they are not skilled though. @@chodechotchney5331

im also wanting a non toxic cutting oil i can make at home. heard a whisper of a rumor about peanut oil........ sounds too good to be true (also problems with rancidity)
@lapislignum
@lapislignum 3 жыл бұрын
Just try it, I think oils going rancid is only a problem when you put them on wood as it stays there and due to the porous nature of them. If you are after a finish on steel boiled linseed oil perks well, and you can even get anti-mould types.

I found peanut oil to be very good cutting oil, at least when drilling, flash point is quit high and I will also use it on my lathe soon with no worries at all.

Ok, but how to prevent rust forming by the lingering water on the equipment? The workpiece is probably cleaned after, but the nooks and crannies of the machine?

I worked in a machine shop making parts for aerospace. The cutting fluid/coolant was 4% mineral oil, 95% water, and 1% emulsifier. Never had a problem with rust once things were done being machined.

@@lapislignum Do we need a high flash point ? It is an aqueous solution. I would not know where to begin to look for that and I'll bet it's rarity would make it expensive.

Just mix any oil with water and some detergent, if it looks milky it will lbw better than nothing. Or buy cutting fluid.

@@lapislignum I cannot just use regular cutting fluid as they use the same crap as in antifreeze and auto coolant. That splashes on my basement floor . My cats step in it, even when it's dry and then lick it off their paws. They then die a horrible death.
