Great video. Thanks for sharing. We also have an Ikea Bekvam step-stool at home. And about two years ago I had the idea of making a second one because I had some (a lot) old beech flooring parts which could be suitable for that purpose. Now two years later, the plan and the flooring parts are still there but the DIM Bekvam step-stool not. I'm glad you made one and you should how it is possible to do it. But I lack 80% of your skills and 90% of your tools. I wonder how long time it took you to make it.

Nice work Peter. I have three of these stools from Ikea. The first one (a long time back) was in a much heavier wood than the other two and I was quite disappointed that they changed the wood to something much lighter. Still, not so heavy to carry I suppose. Very useful stools. Yours looks too nice to stand on.
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын

Great looking build. I have 3 of the Ikea ones from the mid to late 2000s and they were a bit chunkier in those days. Same with the Kitchen Trolley in the Bekvam range. I suppose Ikea have slightly reduced the timber dimensions over the years for cost purposes.
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I’ve noticed a bit of ‘thinning down’ of a lot of Ikea stuff over the last few years. What’s that old line from Colin Chapman - if it breaks it’s too light, and if it doesn’t break then it’s too heavy... 🤷♂️😂👍

My wife bought a long cabinet from IKEA recently and I was very unimpressed by their cost cutting. It's nothing like what they used to produce. It's 6ft long with a glass top and I can lift it off the ground without straining (I'm fairly weak too!). The panels are all hollow chipboard and when you shake them on assembly you can hear broken bits of chipboard (or dead insects or whatever) inside. It was inexpensive, but also felt inexpensive which was never the case with IKEA before

Over 30 years while raising a family in tiny house in London, I've hacked or copied many IKEA products. It's almost impossible to buy the timber and hardware for anything like the price of their ready to assemble items though used to replace their hinges till they raised their quality. Often trimmed them to fit which meant new fixing positions or reinforced them. Took 8 inches off a pine loft bed and hoped daughter wouldn't grow - she didn't.

Norman Bott Thanks Norman. It’s coming, but when I shot this video I’d literally had it out of the box for 40 minutes - not really long enough to perform a reasonable assessment! I’ll have a ‘first impressions’ video out before too long. 👍👍

This is so cool! I adore these stools and have a pair of them in my workshop for all sorts of purposes. I even have a couple 20mm hole drilled through the tops of them for ‘MFT-style’ clamps to be used. I’m no lightweight (110kg) but they’ve not creaked under me in years of use.
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Cheers Frank! I love these stools - hadn’t thought of the MFT-option though! Genius idea, I may use that in a future build - full credit given if I do! 👍👍

So have you been secretly jointing and planning MDF all this time?

@@10MinuteWorkshop thank you very much and excuse me for being so persistant... but i sent you my question under your last video about dominos and lamellos etc... your opinion would be very helpful for me. Thanks a lot and a nice evening

My apologies - I wrote a response on that video but for some reason it didn’t send/post. I’ve replied in that comment thread, to keep things tidy, but thank you for being persistent and asking again. Best wishes, Peter.

@@10MinuteWorkshop thank you very much. This is very helpful for me. Perhaps i start a series of Videos comparing products of festool and parkside. There are only some on youtube, not all in german. One from you. Perhaps it is interesting for DIY's. Thank you very much. Have a good time

I have got to admit that was a great video its nice to see you using raw mdf🤣 All joking aside would live to see you do more real wood....................
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Haha, hadn’t though of ‘raw MDF’ 😂 It’s been an interesting detour into an adjoining neighbourhood that wasn’t actually terrible - so maybe I’ll revisit sometime. 🤔🤷♂️👍

With the amount of excess timber you had over could you make a second unit or more? As a batch would have reduced your cost in time spent!
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
No - I used pretty much all the Sapele I had on the framework and rails. I could manage another step in Oak, and two in idigbo, but that’s it. 🤷♂️

Would be interesting how much you would of had to charge as I get it all the time “ how much I can buy one from ikea for ?”
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
More on this in the blog post at 10minutrworkshop.com. Short answer though, I’d want a days work plus materials, so £400-£450, that kind of neighbourhood. It’s a nice neighbourhood, but I don’t think I’d get many takers. 🤷♂️👍😂

Peter.....that's real wood! Are you feeling ok? do you need to lie down on some MDF? lol

I am feeling a little queasy tbh, and a lie-down on some MDF-shaving stuffed pillows may be just the thing!. 😂😂👍👍

No, sorry - it’s an Ikea design, so not something I can sell plans to!

Always an excuse. Founding member Simon Knightly thought he could duck out of the meet-up because he was moving house. Pathetic excuse. 🤷♂️😂👍

Nice work!. Are the meetups only for professional makers, or hobbyists as well?
@10MinuteWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
MrSammyse Thanks! No, the meet-ups are open to anyone who can get along. You don’t have to buy anything, don’t have to take part in the #3easypieceschallenge - but for £15 why not give it a go?? Give @essexmakers_official a follow on Instagram for more details👍👍

4:15 err... hang on what about... 4:29 ah, indeed. Very neat. That was bugging me right from the start. I've tended to domino square and end cut to angle afterwards. But I think your way is better.

Cheers Andrew; actually I do prefer the other way - cutting the angle afterwards - but just forgot to do it on this build as it was a bit rushed. 🤷♂️👍
