John, I gave up paying a cable TV bill and a satellite TV bill years ago. I am happy to kick in a buck (or $5) every month to show my appreciation to you creating videos. Much better value in the long run. Keep the videos coming. Always entertaining sir!

I'm in. I don't do much woodworking any more (don't have a place for a shop), but watch your videos because I pick up all kinds of little tips that help in everyday repairs or small projects. I appreciate that your videos are concise. I find that many other youtubers have videos that are much longer than they need to be.

The worst advice I hear a lot (mostly from people who don't run a business) is "Just do what you love!" That's like the world's worst business plan! 🤣 I LOVE my job, but I am hyper-aware of what my audience (customers) demand and produce most of my content for them. I recently shifted my Patreon model to a no-tier system. Everyone receives the same rewards regardless of what they pledge. What I found was that people still pledge the amount they feel my show is worth. Patreon supporters are there because they really love what you do and want to help. They are your core, elite viewers. I find that most creaters achieve around .1% of their suscriber count on Patreon. 1% would be awesome!

Again, solid observations, Steve. I certainly still love doing this, but it doesn't blind me to the realities of trying to earn enough to make a living from it. People assume that if you mention any of the negative aspects, then you can't be enjoying it. My Patreon is set up with no actual rewards, other than the occasional early viewing and discounts when I release a new plan.

I Build It Scrap Bin I honestly believe that offering Patreon that way...as a donation page...is just as successful as offering lots of rewards. I support a couple of channels and don't do it because of the rewards but because I love the content! There are plenty of exceptions of course...some people actively work Patreon very diligently as their primary income stream. It's especially good for musicians.

Good Evening, As a viewer, I am confused with what KZbin has done to its "makers"! I heard they cut back on posting and makers revenue. Can someone please state / compare how it was before/ now; ie what you guys paid to be on youtube, what youtube paid you, and costs to make a video? I believe the more the "viewer" knows; the more understanding we will be toward your cause and your Patreon pages.

This may sound mean or hurtful; but it is a hard truth. There are many woodworking pages outthere and I subscrive to some of them. The are a feww reasons why I picked "Ibuilt" and "wwmm" over many others. These are just a few but the main ones: Funny, calm, and confident. You make me feel confident that I can do it also. You both are funny; yet professional in your own way. Your explanation of why you do it the way you do it. Yes, you and other "makers" build similiar stuff. But they dont explain it well enough. Both of you build stuff based on your viewers but also build the stuff you guys want to and make it interestesting Bottom line is: You cant please everyone with your videos.

“880 videos is a substantial investment in time” I see you are big into understatements.....that many videos, professionally produced like yours are, is to me almost unimaginable. I think I’ve seen almost all of them though.

To me this is the perfect explanation of why I support you on Patreon. I figure if I went to a movie and paid approx $12 to get in, I get about an hour and a half entertainment. If I watch 7,8,9 or sometimes 10 videos of yours in a month I get about the same amount of ‘time’ entertainment. And I enjoy it. And to me it’s better because I also learn something. Always a supporter of your content.

John, I appreciate your rambles, shared experience, and wealth of common sense woodworking and carpentry know-how. This channel is just as good as your others, and better in some respects. By the way, the blunt honesty of "Sorry, I'm distracted by a robin that keeps hitting my window" is priceless. That's the kind of editing that is unique to the provider of content. Keep up the fine work. I am looking forward to your table saw build. No pressure. :)

I always had hoped that my subscribing and tuning in to watch your videos would be enough of my contribution. Showing interest in your approach to your project workflow is what keeps me coming back to watch and I usually watch from start to finish. I do like the fact that youtube is free for us. I hope you continue doing videos because I enjoy them all. I get turned off by those others that seem to be focused on the sponsors product instead of the teaching of making the project and.good result. I have been watching you for the past four years, thanks.

Very informative. I found your channels about a year ago and binge watched them for months. The sheer entertainment value was better than most of what I get from my hundreds of cable channels that I pay over $200 per month for. I started giving $5 per month on Patreon because it was the right thing to do. It is not a donation or gift. It is a simple way to chip in because I enjoy the content. I appreciate all of it from the excellent built videos to the POV’s, and especially the rants and long talks. Keep up the good work. I intend to continue my monthly $5 contribution for as long as you keep making videos. Ignore the morons.

I felt so bad watching this and seeing your blue belt sander in the background all the time. I built one last year just by watching the videos and instructions, without buying the plans, but it is exactly your design. I always wanted to contribute back somehow, so today I bought the plans. Call that my first 12 months.

I think there are two audiences. There are the short-form people who want a general synopsis of how to make something. 5-15 minutes, no talk, no design decisions, ready-set-go. Then there is the other audience. They like to hear people talk and don't view it as a how-to video so much as it a community. "Oh, my buddy online again, let's see what he has to say". They're fine with a 30+ minute video. Likely because it's played in the background and no one is looking for any amazing insights. I see a lot of channels moving to this second format while the first format gets the initial traffic. $0.02 Keep up the great work!

That was what it took to get me into Patreon. I felt a bit cheap pledging only $1.00 a month but what you're saying makes sense and I like it. It's about what its worth to me without getting into things I'd like to see more of in the world. I've learned a lot from your videos over the last two years. Don't let them change you. I like your rants and your cussing too. The only thing I would say is that your build videos give you the right to rant. I would never watch your rants if I hadn't watched build videos. I really like what you're doing and how you're trying to pull together a living. Good on you.

This is how I support John too, I gave up on Patreon after they attempted to change their plan a couple of months ago, I still don't trust them and will continue to buy plans in the future. I've spent more in plans in the last three months than I gave in the 12 or so months via Patreon so he's ahead in the money side of things. I get that not everyone will buy the plans so patreon might be be better for them but his plans are well done and cheap for what you're getting.

Hey John, as one of your 1%ers I thought I would share one thought that you didn’t mention. That is Brand. You are a brand and a “personality”. I watch all your stuff, partly cause of what you build but mostly cause I like you as a personality that I find entertaining and genuine. Now don’t get all tears on me, but don’t forget that part of your ability to make a buck at this is because you have a good brand. Thank you.

John, I just signed up to support you. I retired a few years ago and have been focused on building out my wood shop and improving my skills. I've learned a lot from your posts and appreciate your direct style. Usually it's something I should have known - like putting an angle on the head of my wooden mallet. I made a nice one last year but didn't realize, until I watched your video, that it would be much better with an angled head. Duh, I should have known but missed that. It has one now. Sometimes the simple but obvious things in your posts are the ones that really help me the most. Thanks.

It's great and appealing value that you offer... makes most of your projects possible with what you have and not always relying on good sources of all kinds of exotic woods. Really like the lumber rack storage cabinet. Could be used for numerous alternative storage uses, not just lumber storage. Rant videos are fine, if they are justified, like yours are. The camera angle in the "rant video" was perfect... like popping out of the screen and bite ones head off type of thing. Anyways... keep up the good work. Its always enjoyable and instructive.

I just watched your “Making Money On KZbin And The 1% Solution” video. I thank your videos are great and very much enjoy watching what you do. I think you are brilliant when it comes to designing and making different items. Your ideals also give me a lot of ideals and information on how to do and make other projects. One comment I do appreciate is your decision to stop cussing. As you said it only takes away from the quality of your video. However I can understand your frustration with some peoples (or should I say Idiots) comments. I was not aware of being a Patreon. I think your videos and information are well worth contributing too. Just remember more complainers will post a comment the praises. So for every negative comment you receive remember could be 100 positive thoughts and comments are not being posted. You are good at what you do, you are honest, admit when you make a mistake or screw something up and I appreciate that. Keep up the good work; I will become a small time Patreon. May God Bless you and your Shop.

I have just watched a video from Stumpy Nubs and puts me into thinking about myself and others with disabilities. No matter where you came from in life it can throw you a right bummer at times. Now this man has a unique talent that he has decided to share with anyone that wants to watch this type of video. As for his rant , well I have my own take on that, maybe I will comment later on it. The point I am trying to make is that by all means make a comment but if it is something you don't like, make it a constructive comment, not fowl mouthed ignorant gibberish, and if you show the man a bit of respect he may even show a bit back. After reading this I will go back and make a comment and I hope it is taken by both parties in the constructive manner in wich it is given.

The thing about the easy to make videos is that yes, you could crank out 10 of those instead of one build video but for how long? Eventually the shtick is going to wear thin. It's kind of like when a tool company gets bought out and they start dropping the quality to make more profit off the reputation that had been built up over many years.

With you all the way on that, Kevin. It's just that there can be a balance - up to now I've been putting out on average 1 full build video per month, and that's too much to give away. Better to mix in a healthy blend of quick ones to dilute the effort.

I am glad to see that you are cutting back on rough language. I made the decision to not swear in my videos when I first started making them. I had experienced a heart attack and during the uncertainty I decided that I wanted to pass on my knowledge to my grandchildren to come. Not wanting them to see Grampa as a miserable old grouch I tried to explain in a clear manner what I was doing. I'm not sure anymore what type of channel I have. I really appreciate hearing something like this from an established KZbinr, so thank's for sharing your experience with us don't care about negative criticism and please keep talking!!! I came out with very first video a month ago and it took me many many days making it - still a 1000 miles away from earning any money. For me as KZbinr-greenhorn my motivators for now are passion and love for making stuff, sharing it and getting in contact with others. I think everybody who started out a couple of years ago can be lucky. There was less content available so channels grew up faster. My impression is that the monetary trend goes towards, ... having contracts with companies, making product presentations at least for many new KZbinrs.

I heard that facebook, google and siri listen to us passively from our mobile devices, collecting data from our conversations. They use that data to make advertisement and media recommendations. An example was yesterday when i was talking to a friend about Charlie Murphy. Today, i now have Charlie Murphy recommendations in my youtube video home tab feed. More people should talk about woodworking.

I find it very interesting that several (5) of the other channels I subscribe to have introduced their videos over the past few weeks with the comment, (paraphrasing) "This video is going to be mainly talking and if you don't want to listen to me talk... turn it off now." Or, (again, paraphrasing) "I'm not going to cover this detail here. I've covered it many times before so watch those videos or watch one of the many other videos on youtube." Point being, you're not alone. All the best, -- Joe

I'm more like you than like most KZbin viewers. I am honestly proficient enough at woodworking, metalworking, automotive performance, fabrication and repair, engineering, handyman type stuff, various IT disciplines (my actual career)... that I honestly can and have made a living off of many of them, even off of teaching people these things in person (I used to teach at a technical school). I don't watch channels like yours so much to learn things but because I like you, you're entertaining in some way, and you might give me an idea for things. What is that worth? I don't know. I used to get pushed by friend's and family to add a sig on the sites that I helped a lot of people for "donations" for the help to cover all the time I spent... well that never went anywhere useful. I was providing a worthwhile, useful service. In many cases, I could even add up how much money I saved people. It wasn't something so ethereal as people watched me do things (unless I was actually teaching a class and then I was getting paid) Patreon is an odd one. From what I hear (I haven't looked at it in a while) they take too much off the top, which seems to be the case with most tech-based services like this, for example, what are web hosts providing that is really worth anything near what they're charging? It costs them fractions of that to provide it. Irrespective of that, the $1 limit is what is keeping a lot of people from doing really well with it. Most are still watching adds on the channels and if they're practical about it they feel that they're paying by putting up with the ads (I know that's not how they work, but traditionally you watch TV that is paid for by the ads you tolerate every 10min, whether you buy something or not, you don't have to go to the sponsor's website during the TV show). Past that I've done the math and figured out that if I gave $1 to everyone that puts up useful content I would be paying more than I would traditionally a subscription service like cable TV. Oh, and I'm paying for that TV also even though I don't watch it- my internet connection is cheaper with TV bundled with it than without. It's not that you're not worth a $1/month, it's that if you add it up you and a few others are actually costing a lot of us a couple of hundred dollars/month, and somehow you're not getting any of it. If we could cut those costs, or even donate say $.25/month on Patreon, it I would bet that you'd see many times the people doing it. I hate to say it there are just too many people, that are not willing to pay me for what I'm giving them (and I've largely stopped doing a lot of it online because of that) and too many people with their hands in my pocket that don't deserve it and that it doesn't leave much for those that do. :-/ It's not fair but I'm not sure how to fix that.

I appreciate the explanation of the economics of YT. Definitely do what you need to do to grow your business how you want to. If I were in your shoes, I'd concern myself with maximizing (over the long-term) revenue over total subscribers or views or whatever. I appreciate earnestness and I can smell when a "content creator" is pandering or goosing the audience for views and it doesn't take long before they go on ignore if the "depth" isn't there.

Didn't realize you had a Patreon. Just kicked in $2 per month. Everyone has there own reasons, for my part it is indeed your approach, directness and personality (swearing and all) that keeps me watching your videos. I am curious if you have any opinion or insight as a KZbin creator. I am a KZbin Red subscriber. Do you think that helps, hurts or is neutral in so far as direct benefit to the creators I watch when compared to ad revenue from those who actually see the ads.

John me old mate, I love a good bit of swearing personally - especially for added effect. If you were to do an online course i'd sign up to it instantly. One other thing you don't seem to do that many other channels promote is amazon affiliate links? You have many tools and a good understanding of them and there pro's and con's i'm sure many people would be interested in the tools you have and use . . . . .

So it seems that you got some new patrons. 👍🏻 Maybe you should mention that you have a Patreon Page on your Main Channel from time to time. I think that many of your followers do not know about it.

I generally agree with you about the swearing, it should be used like hot sauce ,sparingly and for the desired impact. But then I see the # of Patreon donations Ave has and see I'm in the minority. But even mrpete222 watches him and I doubt he swears if he pounds his thumb with a maul. So I gladly send my $ to you and a half dozen others because its a bargain from my perspective. Thanks

It's your channel. If I don't like what you have to say I won't watch. I'd never tell you to change to be more to my liking... It's a shame the internet goes in that direction so often. Don't sweat the trolls!

I think the trend for KZbin content creators to start a Patreon account early on, is a wise thing. That way, the viewers can be aware of this other, independent way of supporting the content creator. You know, just in case KZbin changes the formula and demonetizes a bunch of their content. Patreon allows the content creators to have a direct relationship with the people who like their content, such that KZbin can screw that relationship up. It's ok if it doesn't actually generate any substantial income in the beginning.

I just kicked in 2$ as i really want to see you keep going. It's probably too little for what i get out of your videos. I used to donate 2$ before but after a safety issue concern recently i paused. Safety is an important issue to me but so is also keeping you going :)

I'm sure you must have evaluated this before, but did you ever look into merchandising? Your channel logos would look great on a shirt or cap. You probably have a few colourful sayings you could throw on too. Or is there not enough of a return on products like that?

I did a t shirt run a couple (3?) years ago and it was very successful. But I'd don't want to be that guy that's constantly on about selling stuff, and you need to do that to make it work.

Okay John, I'll admit that I'm a bit of a dope in terms of the technology. Your videos are good in that you are a quality carpenter and wood worker. I don't do everything the same as you but I have gotten a LOT of great ideas from your vids. My question......How do I sign up for Patreon? I suspect it's a dumb question, but I'm willing to "buck" up. Thanks.

I’m noticing another huge trend, live streaming. I watched this one stream, and noticed the person was getting donations left and right. I’m guessing well over $500 during the 1 1/2 stream. It’s just something I personally noticed, so I can’t say it’s for everyone.
