Being more ON TOPIC.... That is such a fantastic idea for a lift-out section! I've said that it doesn't matter how long you've been doing something, you'll never know everything!! This is no exception. After 42 years of Model Railroading experience, I have never done a lift-out, and so far (after many), this is the best looking, easiest and most secure method of doing one! I can't wait to see the rest, and save them for future reference!! Carmine 🚂

Thanks Deryk for posting this. I've been racking my brain (which doesn't take much to rack it!), on how to do a simple lift out. I've looked at all the model railroad magazines and internet, and had about one thousand ideas, but yours was the simplest for me to contstuct. Now I can get back to work on laying track on my N scale layout know what I'm going to do with the lift out section. Thanks again!

I really like those brass furniture dowels and surprised I'd never heard of them before. There is one spot where I may end up needing a lift out and I'll be using those. One thing, though, I think I'd epoxy them in the holes. The second one you did went in easy and I'm thinking with use over time they could start loosening up. We did that years ago for vibration with T-nuts used in the plywood bulkhead of R/C airplanes where the gas engine attached. - Paul
@DGModelworks10 жыл бұрын
CB&QGuy Thanks Paul! That one dowel was the only one that went in easy. All the others had to be hammered in really hard. They should be ok. I don't want to epoxy them in, just incase I need to redo the lift out later on, I can pop them out and reuse them. But that is a great idea, and I might end up having to do it anyways.
@davidcurtis5398 Жыл бұрын
They shouldn't get loose after all you are using them only for alignment and not any hard structural integrity. They will not have any pushing or pulling forced on them. They just set in place.
@davidcurtis53988 жыл бұрын
For future reff. If you had a drill press, you could use this to get the dowel in straight. I use these type of inserts in wood projects so I can use a bolt instead of a screw and then I have threads that will not strip out. They make several types of them .
@DGModelworks8 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing most people are like me and do not own a drill press. That's not something that everyone has.

Deryk, I'm enjoying your older videos - some for the first time - like this one! To address your opening statement - "You guys seem to like my videos, even if they are of repetitive subjects"... It's your personality my friend! 👍👍 You've nailed that "I'd like to have a beer with that guy" kind of image. I realize that it's just you, but that's still harder to portray than you'd think! I spent my life (before the first tragedy 6 years ago) always helping people. Money, supplies, time, knowledge, whatever. I'm thrilled to do it. Still am! But apparently, everything I have gone through, everything I have lost over the past 6 years, has made me bitter... I don't mean to portray that image, but lately, it just seems to fall out whether I want it to or not. 11 months ago, when I lost my daughter, and my situation was so bad that we couldn't even afford to get to her funeral on the other side of the Country. One person asked for help for us, Vinny - who I will always be grateful. YOU and five other people offered help, and we were extremely grateful! Sadly, it wasn't even enough for the trip, much less any of the mountain of expenses we were hit with, with health and Auto insurance going up, and new management buying our apartment building, and raising our Rent by *$55.00 per month* to as they said, "restore market value!!! All that has left us destitute. We still don't have basic needs like basic cable and internet! Good or bad, I have lost *105lbs!* Although it's been by starving.... Then, I started seeing many people I knew, posting all kinds of stuff about some guy I never heard of until last September. That was Sparky. It seemed like everyone was pouring everything they could into his problem.... His basement flooded, and his Layout was damaged. Later I found out, Sparky is a pretty good guy. 😉 But at the same time, we were STARVING. My kids and grandkids got NOTHING for Christmas last year, and this year is looking the same. We were about to lose the roof over our heads. We lost our only car, and systematically losing everything else! My heart, and my spirit, were shattered. The response from everyone except you 6 friends... I was blocked, unfriended, ignored, or told to STOP WHINING!! So, as our situation steadily got worse - could anyone really blame me for becoming bitter? I of course, realized that it wasn't helping my family's situation. Why am I telling you all this? I don't know, honestly. Maybe for healing? Therapy? Maybe I'm just so confused that I have no idea how I'm going to pull my family out of this shithole... This really got off track (pun!!). I do believe that your popularity is directly related to your personality! As I'm trying to claw my way back here, I'm trying to find the sparkle that I used to have, before I start making videos again. That can't happen until I can afford a couple of 16gb micro SD cards for my camera... I'm trying to find my first steps, my friend. Carmine 🚂

Nice job on the lift out. I have a couple of suggestions. You should score both sides of the wood before snapping it. You should have used plywood. In time the lift may warp. Being natural wood, it doesn't like temp. or moisture change. The dowels are furniture pins. If you didn't want to drill all the way through there is a dowel copy pins so the holes line up. I know the average person doesn't know about these things but I built furniture years ago. I don't want to tell you how to build it but give you a little advice. Scott

That is greet advice, I started my tilt up with 1x6 and within a week I noticed warping, #alwayscheckforcrown

Scott Downey Oh well, time will tell. And it depends on what part of the world you live in, as to the name of the furniture 'dowels'. I agree I am no carpenter or furniture maker, but it's just a lift out for crying out loud. I'm not building kitchen cabinets.

I know it is late for this note but is would be better to have taken the block and pressed the dowel parts into the wood. I use a metal "C" clamp and just tighten the clamp until I have the parts where I want them. This is a very simple method and I feel better than pounding on them with a hammer. Also you will have much more control with the clamp method. And while I am here, why don't you all just build the base and insert the lift out and then cover all of the base with the foam. This will elevate your having to do any shimming, This works because I have done it on many lift outs and they have operated for many years. I usually use a "white glue" for all of my track but t the ends of the lift out, I use liquid nails for strength and a permanent fix. This might be a better tip than the one below...

Nicely done. Although I won’t have a lift out section to avoid a duck under like you, I can use this technique to make under layout staging track removable so that I can have unencumbered access to switch machines mounted in the same area. BTW, Go Steelers!

You lost me at that you used clear pine for your bridge material. I could see that your board is already starting to twist as pine will do. Should of used three quarter inch plywood which will remain stabil. I would never build a cross over the way you did but hope it works out for your layout.
