The soap looks lovely. The only comment I have is that you don't need the added expense of extra virgin olive oil. I started making soap 40 years ago, and mostly used pomace olive oil. Since you aren't eating it, (I hope!) you don't have to worry about the taste difference, and there's no difference in the soap quality. There's a slight color difference, but unless you particularly want a bit greener soap, I'd do the switch. Cheers!

Can you use coconut oil in a tropical country with heat and humidity? Will it melt?
@riverbellcottage
@riverbellcottage Жыл бұрын
You can’t substitute coconut oil in this recipe as it requires a different amount of lye. Also saponified coconut oil is highly cleansing and so requires a much great super fat (additional oils) to prevent it from drying out the skin). Try googling a coconut oil soap recipe, there are plenty online that already have the super fat calculated. Soap doesn’t melt in the heat. It can sweat though in humid climates due to the naturally occurring glycerine in the soap. Hope that helps!

A reaction between the sodium hydroxide and latex. And vinyl is a polymer aka plastic, or synthetic material, that will shrink if heated. I guess it's okay to use heavy rubber gloves like the ones used to wash dishes, but thin latex can have microscopic holes in them that can lead to chemical burns. Same as a condom is 99.9% guaranteed. Not to mention latex is an has allergenic properties.

If I want to substitute less olive oil for some coconut oil does that affect the lye solution
@richardhayman4868
@richardhayman4868 Жыл бұрын
Hope you got an answer on your own or elsewhere; I'm just now seeing your question. Yes, substituting oils/fats absolutely changes the chemistry as each oil/fat has a slightly different amount of lye that is necessary to convert it to soap. If you don't use enough lye, then you end up with an oily goo; if you use too much, then you end up with a bar that has lye leftover that will burn your skin. Cold process soap making is straightforward, but it is still chemistry. Best to stick to established recipes until you understand the process/chemistry well enough to begin blending/substituting oils/fats. Just one man's opinion...

This is called soda ash and is very common in olive oil cold process soap. It's also known as sodium carbonate and occurs when some of the lye reacts with the co2 in the air as the product is saponifying. Because olive oil soap takes longer to saponify there is often more soda ash on the product. It's totally safe to use still and just washes off. It isn't caustic at all. Hope that helps.

It’s safe to use after 48 hours but it will be very soft and will go soggy quickly in the shower. The cure time is so the soap can develop and harden as excess water evaporates. This soap is better the longer it cures. But if you can’t wait it is perfectly safe to use after 48 hours ☺️

@riverbellcottage
@riverbellcottage 3 жыл бұрын
No you can't change the oil as each oil has its own 'sap' value which means it needs a different amount of lye. Using too little lye will mean a soggy soap and too much will make an abrasive bar that will irritate the skin. Always use an online soap calculator to determine the lye needed if you are using different oils. Hope that helps.

I've always wanted to try making soap and this is most likely a very noob question but how would you scent it...would you use essential oils or something else?

@@Alphadragon1979 yes you’d stir in about 15g of essential oil before you pour it into the moulds. ☺️

Does this soap lather? I'm interested in trying this but just wondering how well it cleans and lathers, and if it dries the skin?
@riverbellcottage
@riverbellcottage 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it lathers beautifully and gets better if you let it cure for 8-12 weeks. It's got a 5% superfat so doesn't dry the skin at all.

@@walemutman9102 not with olive oil soap as its very soft and takes several weeks to harden. You can add salt to help harden up but I would recommend making soap using harder butters like cacao butter and shea butter which would create a harder bar. You can also discount water to help reduce the curing time. Lots of options!
