You can use aluminum instead of phosphorus for the reaction so long as the iodine is in slight excess and you keep at reflux. You get methyl iodide, aluminum iodide, aluminum oxide and anhydrous hydrogen iodide. If you have a 💀 wish you can do a one pot synthesis of dimethyl mercury by using aluminum amalgam with excess mercury instead of aluminum 😮

The CH3I could have been lost (via hydrolysis) during the washing step with aqueous solution. Why not add the drying agent and the thiosulfate as solids and then filter them off

Actually you can order ONLY 100 g red P per year without special registration, but with buying iodine in the EU there are no legal problems.

You can substitute aluminum for the phosphorus if you like, but it's a bit less efficient. Same goal though, iodiomethane by reduction of methanol via HI. In short it forms AlI3 that reacts with the methanol forming AlOH3 and MeI while iodine combines with AlOH3 to male Al2O3 plus HI. A small amount of water actually catalyzed the reaction, but too much will quench it. It takes advantage of the dual nature of aluminum being both a reducing agent and oxidizing agent at different steps.❤

I dont know for which step in the amphetamine synthesis this could be used, but it would probably be really unefficient since it would methylate the amine and produce dimethylamphetamine, but if a sufficient protecting group is added to the amine you could probably quite easily synthesise methamphetamine from amphetamine with methyliodine!

@@fatman9644 dimethylamphetamine is definitely still psychoactive its just not as potent as methamphetamine. I agree with you in that it wouldnt be practical to use this for these purposes.. The chemicals used to make this stuff can definitely be used in methamphetamine synthesis however lol.. I found funny that he was worried about hyaluronic acid but not the possession of iodine phosphorus and methanol all at once lol

I saw something on KZbin a year or more ago that rural meth production had really dropped off because Chinese imports were so much cheaper. China changes some laws, I think, but I believe Mexico stepped up. LE really shouldn’t be worried about meth synthesis when fentanyl is killing so many people either.

@@firstmkb there are Chinese imports but meth production is still huge in the united states due to pseudoephedrine being readily available, shake and bake which is just a dirty birch reduction is something anyone can do at home so a lot of ppl still make it, especially in the southeast where i live. Ive known a few cooks in the past lol, none of them used the traditional method with phosphorus, iodine etc. It was usually just shake and bake meth. They'd get a bunch of ppl to buy pseudo for them and then theyd cook a large batch and it would be ready to sell in the same day

You can't get ephedrine in Germany or Austria (or almost anywhere else in Europe for that matter), nor pseudo-ephedrine except perhaps on prescription. So they government doesn't care. The only reasons that I can think of why they recently placed restrictions on (red) phosporus are agents of the nervous variety, you could buy kilo's of it without a problem but now you're limited to 100 gr per year, and most chemical suppliers stopped selling it to individuals alltogether. Which sucks, as phosporus is a very handy reagent for plenty of things in the lab.

@@pieterveenders9793 You very much can get these precursors (ephedrine and pseudoephedrine) cheaply in bulk in these countries, especially on the illicit market where regulations arent followed.. if you cant find them you're not looking hard enough. Its become easier to source things than it has ever been in the past with how developed the internet is these days. While its true pseudoephedrine and ephedrine are easier to get in the states than it is in other places i can personally think of multiple sources that would be happy to deliver to ALL of the countries mentioned and quite frankly a lot of EU customs are more laxed than they are here in the USA when it comes to international orders. I wouldnt worry about being placed on a watchlist simply because you purchase these chemicals, but if an officer shows up to your house and you have all of this alongside pseudo/ephedrine in good quantities than good luck telling them its not for making meth. Idk how european police are either but United states police depending on where you live literally might take you to jail soley for reagents even if you dont have any precursors, they dont discriminate. My point wasnt to say that one chemical is riskier to purchase or own than another and i can see how i might have come across that way i was just making fun of something he said in the video.

Methyliodide is pretty big for a molecule with that few atoms. Dimethylsulfate is something i will try to avoid as best as i can but maybe it will come into use somday? ;)
