My name is Lucy, I'm a Dutchwoman here to offer an alternative approach to beauty.
On this channel I do mostly hair tutorials where I show you how to braid, pin and style your own hair. I recreate hairstyles from movies, tv shows or history and I regularly come up with my own, which I love to share with you!
I really enjoy diving into history to find out how women went about their beauty and dressing rituals in days past. Vintage and history-themed videos are my little passion project.
You'll find a bit of lifestyle content here as well, ranging from cozy chats over a cup of tea (my beloved Tea Time videos) to personal vlogs and home & interior videos.
Enjoy browsing!
Love,
Lucy

I think your dress turned out beautifully! Even as a professional historical costume maker I still struggle with buttonholes!😝

How do you became a professional historical costume maker? Are you a professional historian or a seamstress?

I learned how to do buttonholes manually on an old flat bed machine, so when I got a new sewing machine with automatic button holes, I thought I was in seventh heaven. The first time I used it, I stuffed it up completely. It took me ages to get use to the automatic buttonholer.

Are you using a bad sewing machine? If you have a Singer brand sewing machine, then you'll likely spend more time fixing it than sewing with it.
@pakristofzski

@@alisa9040 growing up, yes, an ANCIENT Singer. I forget which brand I have now, but that's mostly because I fell pregnant & had horrible H.G. then finally my first baby just after I got it and haven't had the time to fiddle around yet! (So upset that that was the timing! Lol). Baby girl should be old enough to let me make her a Halloween costume tho for her 1st one this year!

if there is one thing I look back and wish I would have done differently in my education it's to have learned flat pattern making. I really like sewing and I've dabble in pattern making, but I would LOVE to know all the techniques. It's SO helpful.

I totally agree! @Loepsie: how do you prepare your patterns? Are they based on store-bought patterns, or do you draft all patterns by hand? Any tips to help create an awesome fitting top like in this dress?

I'm definitely with you on the pockets - it's nice to hear someone else have the same opinion! They're so annoying and time-consuming to sew, and I don't want extraneous pockets messing with the line of my skirts/dresses. I can see why a lot of people like having them, but for me I really only need pockets in my outerwear, otherwise I pretty much never use them.

Love it! Just one tip...baste the top of the sleeves along the curve at the top and pull one end of the thread to make your gathers before pinning it on...you can play with the gathers before you pin AND sew, MUCH simpler! 💖🧚‍♀️

Your dress is gorgeous! Also, if you like garments with buttons, you should look into a buttonhole attachment. Which one you need will depend on your machine but I love being able to do buttonholes on my nice strong 1930 Singer 66 instead of my weak 2 yr old Brother machine. Ebay, Etsy, and other such resale sites are a good place to start looking.
@Loepsie

Will a buttonhole attachment work on a machine that can't do zigzag stitches or move sideways? I thought they needed to sew back and forth for that, but I'd love to get something that works with my machine!

I was just thinking earlier while continuing my winter Edwardian skirt project how lovely it would be in a linen for summer, and after seeing that fabric, oh my I've got to get me some of that gorgeous fabric!! Congratulations on your creation! You've come such a long way since that cute plaid skirt last autumn - I remember cringing at the thought of that unfinished inside waistband disintegrating in the washing machine after you'd worked so hard on it! This dress is absolutely beautiful and so so neat. Well done! I've recently found a channel that's helped me a lot with my sewing: Evelyn Wood focuses on teaching vintage sewing skills so you can use them in your own projects. It suits my style of sewing a lot better than teaching that's very project-focused (e.g. do step 1, then step 2, then step 3, then you have this exact garment!) and it might suit your approach too. Again, congrats on a beautiful dress! Can't wait to get let out to fabric shops again to find myself a similar fabric! Ooh I'm so inspired!

If you don't already know about them keep an eye out for a vintage buttonhole attachment that can work with your machine, perhaps? And there are vintage zig-zaggers too. Both are good and I have to say that as long as you go around the buttonhole twice the vintage buttonhole attachments make surprisingly good (very good!) buttonholes. Nice job on the dress too - and once you've worn and washed it a bit and the linen softens it will just get nicer and nicer! :-D Now I'm off to find out what "Cottagecore" is - I've never heard of it before but I really like that dress.
