Great Review!! i use rotary mostly , [old school ] and for Me, a forced rotation would be the best of both world, enough cutting power for the big plates /pads, and free spinning for the polishing finish part.. Makita are very reputable tools , and i think they did their homework on this very niche kind of tool!! :-)

This is an excellent tool and you’ll find yourself using it in forced rotation mode all the time. Yes the machine can be harder to control in forced rotation but if you use high quality pads and make sure you’re not polishing dry, you’ll be completely fine; anyone used to using a rotary polisher will appreciate this machine.

My first machine, bought it used in fine condition. Was concerned about sound of gears until I heard yours make same noise. The cruise control feature is great, its easy to wield and has a high quality screw in handle if required. Forced rotation with microfiber uropad and Perfect finish was exactly what I was searching for but takes more effort because it grabs onto the surface more.

I can appreciate this. I have a rotary and my trusty das 6 ( god love that das 6) ;-) , but yeah I bought a flex 3401 about 2 years ago at waxstock, yeah the forced rotation machines do pull you abit, a lot to do with keeping the polish loose on the surface imo,.. if you let the product dry out these machines pull you about a bit, take your time, use the correct amount of polish and don't be tempted to work to big an area and you be on for a winner with i.e a flex 3401

I was a pro detailer way back when which was long before Flex was even a thought and we always used Mikita and we found they were the best we had then. Mikita would stand up to pro use year after year of 8-10 hour days. Mikita is a little large and heavy but you get use to it. Now a days I just DIY but STILL use Mikita and always will.

Great video Jon, I think it's a great polisher but I would prefer it to spin clockwise like the Mille. I own a Chinese copy of the Flex & an older Bosch sander/polisher that also has the dual mode but it's a smaller size like the DA polishers with the 8mm rotation. It also spins counterclockwise which is odd since most polishers spin clockwise but no big deal they work fine. I wonder how the updated Flex will work & when it's coming out? Any info on that would be great. Thanks, Vince.

Great idea this Makita although I think it would have been a much bidder deal if this had come out a few years back before long throw machines took over the world. This may get passed over due to the small throw but time will tell. Before Rupes when the pros all used rotaries, Makita was the tool of choice so it’s great to see them bring out something new.

I have a the makita forced and absolutely love it, have tested the flex and the rupes but found the makita the best all round bit of gear! Put a wool pad on the makita with a good compound and it munches through defects like theres no tomorrow. And as you said build quality is mint!!

yes bear in mind you cant hit intricate areas with it.. and bear in mind the free spinning function is not that usefull.. but really robust dense well made solid tool at a really strong price point for that quality..... I do recomend it.

They kinds designed the tool around 2step correction forced rotation for compounding and free spinning for final polish a lot older detsiler in us use rotary for compounding and finish with da also sometime in June lake country is releasing it new polisher. It can go from 8mm to 21 mm throw use 6inch and 5inch pad a new tire dress releasd by optimum technology it last 6to 12 months

Some say it stalls immediately, some say it doesn't and the official makita video shows animations which shows NO rotation in free mode. hey maciej its less about ultra soft and more about quality. honestly thats the most important thing. 3m backing plates are good. So are the flex ones. avoid cheap backing plates the velcro hooks snapp off and fall into the pads when you rip the pads off. the cheap ones dont always align properly as well. And note, some of the ones you think would be high quality and are expensive can be actually poor quality. 3m or Flex ones mate.

Dilemma time ! A cordless Makita DPO600 (I already have batteries from my other tools) or a corded Flex XCE... ? It will be approx. the same price for me. Problem is the Makita is sold with a 150mm plate and the spare 125mm cost about 30€. I read the Makita was not as "strong" as its opponents, and could stall pretty fast in free-spinning mode... ! But still I’d consider Makita. Do you have any details on the backing plate ? What kind of attachment is it ? Thanks a lot for this vid !! Keep going !

you can put 125 ml plate on it. I think there a model which comes with the 125 ml plate po5000c. No problem there. The dilema is less about price and the fact makita are less likely to be making polishing tools to accompany it? no mini polisher etc.. The makita polisher itself is really sturdu and well made though and cheaper than flex. so you should be able to decide from this. Its less about quality. more about are you a one tool guy or will you invest in more polishers later on. If so you should go flex.

What mode were you using for finish,,i have the DPO600 cordless,, struggling to go from wet sanded clear coat sanded at 1500 with farecla,,it wont start to shine.

I would step those 1500 marks down steve. soak out some p2500 of 3000 for 30 minutes.. step down the 1500 to 3000.. Then hit the 3000 with a SFC101 or a high cut compound like H8... then refine it. If your nor removing sanding have something is going radically wrong. normal risk is it will shine but you can see rounded rounded sanding marks still. stepping down will ensure that doesnt happen.

I got rid of the 849. was such a smooth well made rotary but it was just too heavy. I use the pe14-2 150 now with the PE8. Or ill use the 3401 with the PE8. More often than not I would start with the 3401. Its a bit slower than the rotary but it always seems to work.

Hi John. Great review. I have this machine and I have a problem. (maybe it is just me.) On forced rotation unless the pad is well lubricated (causing splatter) I feel as if I am fighting the machine which makes it a very tiresome experience. Any tips (i.e. Pad/polish combos) which would make it easier. Thanks in advance.

hey russel so the downside of force rotation is yes if the pad starts to stck your going to feel the machine pull you more. I dont typically find loading up with more polish helps although some guys do. I find pad choice helps. and cleaning the pads properly. and compound. I highly recomend the purple flex pads to cut and the orange flex pads to polish. Team them up with H9 or 8, F5 or6 and M2 or 3.

FR backing plates are proprietary mate. Nowadays they are 5 inch on flex and rupes. I think 5 or 6 on Makita. No 3 inch fr m8

I have access to rupes, lake country, carpro and but&shine. Rupes Bigfoot or Mille pads and Lake country force pads are the ones that y tend to chose... Mainly European cars... Please help 😄

Try and get Flex pads. See part 2 of my best polishing pad video... These pads aint cheap but the purple mid range pad is a beuty, can do most cutting with it and its also great for single stage.. and its proper durable. its expensive though. Have a look at the zvizzer pads if you want nice value. Rupes yellows and whites are great but the green I find is too coarse and breaksdown too fast. Im not actually sold on the lake country force pads yet. can be a bit sticky. but could just need to find a better combo with it. Search out the Flex ones. Also check the new Koch pads.

jesus, tough one.. ok finger in the wind. 30% less time with correction.. hmm dunno.. the mecca whenever you have heavy swirl paint is to do all you correction in one set, isnt it. thats always my aim at least. sometimes on a normal DA like that taking out heavy swirls on hard paint can be like 3 sets. Problem is you cant do much when you have your compound and pads already picked, so there and then when you have your DA theres no much you can do to improve the cut with the machine. With the 3401 you can pressure it in a little bit more without stall. this also makes it better for removing scratching in curvey areas where your DA will want to stall out more when its not on a flat panel.. theres so many factors. but you want a rough guess. 30%

When you say forced rotation is that the same as an orbital or is it still oscillating in forced rotation mode

yes. but the rotation of the plate is driven by a set of cogs. Those cogs dont exist in the free spinning equivalant. take away the track or cogs and the forced rotation is essentually the same as the free spinning DA. Looks like a nice machine. I use a Makita rotary and have been resisting the urge for a forced rotation for a while. With black cars I sometimes get holograms if I don't finish on a soft pad slowly. Will this machine finish a medium cut without holograms? Might be a good video to compare for holograms between rotary and forced rotation. Great vid as always Jon.

Man I wish Flex had an appropriate backing plate for using 5” pads. I feel the 6.5” pads are too big for the machine and they end up tiring me out because I have to work them harder. Flex offers a smaller backing plate but I feel it’s too small for 5 to 5.5” pads. Would be amazing if they offered a 125mm plate as you said. I think it would make the machine MUCH easier to use and effective.

i think flex 3401 has 115 and 140 propriatory plates. and then the 100ml and 150 ml LC adapter plates. (I think. sorry if that wrong thats off the top of my head). yer I would be surprised if the new tool isnt like 125 and 150.

Forensic Detailing Channel My flex came with a 150mm plate and the smaller option flex offers is 4 3/8” which is too small for 5” pads. :( Lake country made one as you mentioned that had appropriate size (4 7/8” if I recall correctly) but a lot of people mentioned it was breaking on them.

I use a PA lance. was 40 quid. its been good. but Im not sure if you need to spend 40 quid. I just bought the 7.99 chinese ones from clean your ride will be interested to see how that does. Ill cover this on the channel at some point. but its like this. If you want to spend 35-40 quid go PA or MTM. If you want to spend like 15 quid. Buy like the in2detailing one or any of the cheap chinese ones. Its generally what you put through them that effects how they perform. every now and then changing out the filters will be good. using spray and rinse chems can block up the filters a bit.

where can you recommend buying a low budget DA Polisher preferably around the £100 - £150 (dont fancy spending a lot because I'm a weekend warrior, it would only be used rarely but wsnt a decent machine)mark also pads and 75mm backing plate you'd recommend. cheers.

I use a Shinemate EX605, its small, its light and counterweight is really good, you get a lot for £140. . . it cant use 75mm so maybe not for you. . .

Id say just get a DAS6 pro. 5 inch plate with some hex logic pads. 75 or 90 ml plate with the 4 inch hex pads. Buy a bottle of Perfect finish and some white pads and away you go. There are of course limitations to doing this but you can also get fantastic results.

sa good as das6 may be. . .the difference in price is abt £20? for this you get long throw and less vibrations. when spending some 8-10h on a car. . .I would say it is easy worth the £20 more. . .

That's not a forced DA..that's just a way to convert a drill (rotary mode) into a DA You can how ever swap a 3in plate onto your Makita po5000cfor a 3in...one Bulky 3 in forced though lol

My great britain from uk.... please let me share some better uses for makita..... with a lake country HDO blue and orange foam with S20 black for cut at forced mode and then refine it with s30 or s40 with dual acrion mode.... the machine is right between rupes yellow wool pad the best of rupes products( cut 8/10) and refine 3/10 with sonax perfect finish and rupes yellow foam pad.... great setup but the foam must have a EVA interface with the lake country try it and send a feed back..... greetings from Brasil

was chatting to reg about this the other day. He machines for 8 hours a day 5-6 days a week. Hes been doing that for over a year and his hands are starting to show signs of wear and tear, joint pain, stiffness in joints etc.. I think this is an issue for people doing a lot of polishing. I dont do it professionally , but if I ever spend adjacent days polishing a car its my back that feels it the most. mainly down to poor posture when polishing. Smooth machines are desirable, the more you do, badly vibrating machines give you numb hands quickly.

@@ForensicDetailing that's why the Makita PO 6000C is the bomb Jon. Remember I've been using one since 2017. It's more solid than the Rupes LK900 Mille more torque and paint correction power. Even if it spins anticlock wise it is more powerful than the Rupes Mille. Ergonomically it's superior to the Rupes Mille ! I have not tried the Rupes Mille but according to Matt Gibb he thinks the Makita PO 6000C is superior in every way especially performance. 535rpm Rupes Mille LK900 against Makita PO 6000C 780rpm ! Great review Jon glad I put you on to Mark Leddy 😊 PS I also own the Flex 3401 VRG since 2008 never missed a beat ! How would you rate the Makita PO 6000C against the Rupes Mille LK 900 ?

cheers mario matts such a top guy, love his passion for this stuff. Id have a makita over the rupes mainly due to price. I still think the rupes is a great tool. it also has a good solid feel although your conscious of being raised back from the panel at bit more even if its literally millimeters. rupes maintains temp better and obviously has less wobble than the flex, love the 9 meter cabel. but yer Id take the makita because its every bit as smooth but basically close to half the price. the most important thing I think is just finding a pad and abrasive combo to use with these tools, it might even be more important than the tool itself. still those 5 inch hybrid pads on the 4 inche flex plate, for whatever reason they make controlling this tool so much easier, less effort, just bang it on the panel and it never wants to walk. so I really will always stick with my 3401. even when the new xce comes out most probably.

@@ForensicDetailing Don't get too excited about the Flex XCE because they haven't made leaps and bounds Jon , I recently spoke with Renny Doyle and he's annoyed that they have not evolved like Rupes and Makita ! If you go on the Flex website you will be utterly disappointed! There specs have been reduced from 480rpm to 430rpm increase in power 1010watts to make up for the shortfall in rpm! In my opinion they have shot themselves in the foot Jon.A lot of Flex fans will go elsewhere because Flex is too stubborn to listen to suggestions typical Germans know it all's! They will loose customers by not listening to there customers requests ! I found with the Makita PO 6000C the best pads for this machine polisher are the Flexipads Xslim foam buffing pads the machine becomes even easier to control when using this combo with hardly any vibrations ! Better than using thicker pads like the Lake Country Forced. A smaller 125 mm backing plate makes all the difference too especially when using this combo!

Hi jon. I did testing for festool a few years ago and i told them to redesign their ro 90 dx mini rotex for detailing use and make its throw 5-6mm. But they just wouldnt listen and change. Bloody germans. I sent makita a full list of specss for a new version of the po6000c a month ago including an eight speed dial up to 850 rpm and a softer bale grip and improvements to ergonomics and the free spinning mode to spin easier and be 12, 14 or 16 mm. All gear driven polishers should be dual orbit and dual moded like the makita in the future

Tell them to make some long throws and mini DA's as well matt :) Makita could sit themselves between the chinese tools and the premium options and provide a really nice option for consumers. the build quality is there isnt it. you can just feel it when you use the tool. I dont think they realise its a market worth exploring. Im thinking you cant easily make the free spinning mode 12,14 or 16 though matt without making the forced rotation move the same though matt? gonna make it to much of a handfull. Do you know if they have patents on this tool?

@@ForensicDetailing you may be right about the forced mode being the same throw size. I have a dynabrade da accessory on a flex stone grinder and it can be locked by a pin to become rotary with 19mm orbit combined. It can flatten peel down somewhat with a microfibre and glasses paint out beautifully but the heat it creates is ten degrees hotter than any other tool in half the time so not ideal and a large orbit forced would be deadly to use and hold onto, be a psycho. But metabo achieved dual orbit with their sxe 450 turbo tec a decade ago, ive owned one for years and washer modded it but doing that with geared and random would be difficult. Chinese tool company im getting to work on the design for me and a mini forced rotation tool. Might need two counterweights. More oscillations per rotation or more rotations per orbit is what rupes did with mille and its great but $1000 bucks.

Yo Brewinz. I dont have them both with me to compare side by side. I did have some grabbing problems with the mille that I didnt have with the makita using the same pad and abrasive combo. But I really dont think thats the machine to blaim, the dynamics are too similiar. I think the main reason you might pick the makita is the build quality is as good as flex or rupes (you could argue its even higher). but the price point is really desirable. Its definetly worth checking out. But I thought the mille was solid as hell, just pricey perhaps.

you can get the PO5000c which comes with 125 or 5 inch plate. You can change the plates.. the tool here was loaned to me had non standard plate.

free spin does not equal DA. DA literally means dual action. So rotation and oscillation. Forced rotation is still a DA for example. I think though most times when peeps say DA they are literally referring to a free spinning machine though.
