The absolute right decision for a random orbital sander - to go with the cord to the battery! Those are very delicate machines and there is no way to make a balanced, smooth, light and easy to use tool of this type with the extra weight and space of a battery and all the inevitable de-balancing. If you want to compete with the Mirkas and the Festools - that is the only way. And the new 40V batteries, from 4Ah up - have ample power, more than the cord. Back in the days - Mirka used to even take out the power supply on their corded Ceros one of the sander - and have it as an external brick power supply - just to save some grams, balancing the tool. I have cordless Dewalt and Makita sanders, have used a lot of other corded ones, some are better than others (well, some are pretty unusable to be fare). But there is really no comparison to my Mirca Ceros. And this new XGT ones look pretty promising. I have never been a fan of the Makita Random Orbital sanders, this is probably the only tool they did not get right in their huge arsenal of tools, talking from back in the days, some 20 years ago. Even the Dewalt ones were better. But it seems they have taken the matter seriously.

Sanders are pbly the one tool i prefer corded. They feel lighter, and are able to just keep sanding. Sanding takes time, and with a cord you just mindlessly sand and sand till it's done.

I have the 6" 5mm orbit version- it runs more smoothly than my corded Festool! Has anyone figured out how to directly attach a Festool style vacuum hose? I can"thread" the hose to the supplied cuff, but the fit is extremely tight and it takes quite a while to successfully connect the two.

good idea with cord. less weight when working on walls.
@jon47157 ай бұрын
Exactly what I was thinking. But also more dexterity in situations where fighting weight is fatiguing rather than stabilizing.
@nils19537 ай бұрын
At that point when weight is a problem, why not just use a corded AC sander? When you do regular sanding of larger woodworking projects you're using dust collection anyway, so AC power is a no brainier anyway. If I do some quick random thing away from the shop and want to sand it real quick, I use the battery powered on, but at that point I don't want whaff around with attaching a cord to my sander and then to my battery and then making sure that I tighten my belt enough so that my pants to fall off and then I'm ready to sand? That doesn't seem all that useful to me

I ordered the bo001cg and it arrived last week (UK). I’ve got to say I’m super impressed with it and it’s by far the best cordless sander I’ve used. I do prefer my 3m sander for finer/stationary work but the Makita is unbeatable for snagging jobs where you can walk around a job without dragging a cord around and the comfort/vibration is so far ahead of other cordless sanders it’s unreal

I’d like a blue tooth vac with a massive battery pack you have to run the vac tube to the tool why not run the power to. They have the power packs they have the vacs combine the two. Or have a bracket so the power pack can be clipped onto the vac. I connect my chop saw, plunge saw, sander, plainer basically all my carpentry tools to the vac. Have a word with Makita for us.

It seems as if Makita could have figured out how to have 1 sander do both 3mm and 5mm orbit with some sort of mechanical linkage. I know it's possible because I've got an old '80's Craftsman that you can change the orbit size on. I do like that they made the battery pretty much separate from the tool, but I have a hard enough time keeping my briches on. Last thing I need is a 5lb battery yanking em down. I guess you could find a way to route it back with the vacuum hose and stick it somewhere down the line and outta your way I bet it makes that tool super nice to use without having the weight of the battery added to it.

Are the 125mm (B0003CGZ) and 150mm (B0004CGZ) versions with the same orbit (3mm in this case) actually the same tool and can be switched between the two sizes with some different parts? Similar to the chainsaws where the same device with different bar lengths can be changed with a different bar. Makita do love making model numbers as confusing as possible! 0:25

@dreamcat47 ай бұрын
so what was the conclusion versus the murka then? because it seems that the murka head and sanding performance was the winner between these 2 choices right? ... if we ignore the other 2 main factors of pricing, and corded vs cordless as being less major / less significant ? if you can still remember how the murka was like earlier beforehand

He did say it wasn't as good as the Mirka, but that you could buy 4.5 of these for the price of that 1 Mirka sander!
@Driver100117 ай бұрын
IMO would have been better to release these with a special hose that has an integrated power cord that can plug into a dust extractor. I see most people buying these as an alternative to Festool and would be using a dust hose anyway so the battery/cord is kinda unnecessary. How was the vibration on these after using them for a while?
I see Makita’s engineer’s dilemma-how to make a cordless sander useable with a big honking battery. I prefer Festool’s solution better. The pro is the sander is sleek & light; the con is the battery is exclusive to their sanders bc of the form factor. Another plus to festool sander is the a\c adapter option( mains for you guys in Oz Land). I’d always been ambivalent about cordless tools that you have to have a vacuum hose attach to anyway bc they are not truly cordless. I’ve change my mind with use bc my festool is truly cordless if I use dust bag.

Man, when these were announced I was very uninterested. The design isn't something that looked all that great to me, having the battery at the end of a cord. I don't have any issues with the ergonomics of my current cordless random orbit (Dewalt) sander. Majority of my time I'm sanding on top of something, and then a bit on the sides, but I've never had an issue with the weight. I switch between that and an also Dewalt cordless belt sander when I need a ton of material removed but not quite to the level to bring out the planer. Then you release this video, watching it in use, I can see the ergonomics argument. But that's not what really got me. Hot damn that thing can remove material. And that they will work with 3M's stupidly good Xtract Net discs which I do like a lot more than any belts I've found...now I want one of these things, damn it.

I love the Mirka with 5mm orbit. It can be fast or fine sanding at low speed and fine grit. I also use the larger 6” pad with a 7” foam polisher pad. So it’s actually two tools, increasing its value. I can also sand spackle overhead at low rpm without a mask or dusting out a house. Amazing tool. These Makitas look great but late to the party as usual. I’ll probably pick one up for portable use or ladder work outside where a vacuum isn’t ideal.

Belt sanders don’t really sell well (and that stands for every region) as of the past two decades. I’m surprised Milwaukee (and I believe Dewalt?) bothered. Festool still offers the classic Holz / AEG belt sander and they can’t even get enough orders to bother making them most of the time.
@Soandsoguy7 ай бұрын
@robertrada4783 doesn't seem like a great reason at all. When you need a belt sander an orbital just won't work well at all. Dewalt ryobi milwaukee and metabo all make one. Makita prides itself in having a large offering and even uses it as a selling point yet they miss a tool as critical as a belt sander. Instead they make a stupid coffee maker.
